Thom Tillis

Shameless Dallas Woodhouse using autism for political purposes

It's a special kind of jerk who would think this is a good idea:

House Speaker Thom Tillis often wears an Autism Speaks pin and supported legislation this year that would require insurers cover certain treatment for autism disorders. The measure got tied up in the Senate and didn't become law, but that's not stopping Carolina Rising from running two ads thanking Tillis for his support.

The North Carolina-based group is run by Dallas Woodhouse, the former state director of Americans for Prosperity. It is a tax-exempt nonprofit that is not required to disclose its donors. According to Carolina Rising it is spending $2 million on the TV ads.

The only thing "rising" is the bile in my throat. Again, a regulatory system that would allow this kind of dark money to be spent is no regulatory system at all.

A North Carolina Bridgegate?

As corporate-carpetbagger friendly as the NCGOP has made North Carolina since taking control of the legislature in 2010, they keep surprising. This latest revelation Monday from North Carolina echoes the billion-dollar, Hudson Lights real estate deal thought connected to Gov. Chris Christie's Bridgegate scandal. WCNC-Charlotte has video here.

Daily Dose: Tholl Road Thom edition

CAMPAIGN 2014
Tillis donors could make millions from toll lanes (WCNC-TV) -- Toll lanes on I-77 – the DOT says they're coming – but many voters don't like them. A group of big time campaign contributors to Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis stands to make millions from your tax dollars tied to the toll lanes. There have been protests and organized opposition from a group called Widen I-77 as well as from some local elected officials in Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville. Thom Tillis supports the toll lanes. He has for years. In a May 2011 televised interview on Carolina Business Review, Tillis told interviewer Steve Crump, "I think we have to take a serious look at toll roads…we don't have enough money coming in for the needs we have." Now the NBC Charlotte I-Team has documented that a group of big time Tillis campaign contributors stands to make millions from your tax dollars tied to the toll lanes. This story all starts with a prime piece of Cornelius real estate called Augustalee.

Tillis finds one teacher who loves Republican policies. Turns out, she's a liar.

Birds of a feather and all.  To my knowledge.

As a teacher, when someone gets something wrong, I correct it. So when I see these negative ads, talking about massive budget cuts and textbook shortages, that is incorrect. Thanks to the leadership of Governor McCrory and Speaker Thom Tillis, North Carolina has increased funding for public schools by a billion dollars.” Wilburn’s chiding is enough to make Democrats go stand in the corner. But in this case it’s the teacher who needs a time-out to go check her math.

The $1 billion increase Wilburn refers to is deeply misleading. Most of that spending includes state contributions to pension and health funds and salary adjustments. It’s not in any real world sense spending for the education of North Carolina’s public school students.  In the real world, spending for education is down. Wilburn could have learned that by going to the financial officer for her own school district. There has been a slight increase in special education funding, but the overall funding for the 5,400-student Yadkin County school district is down.

One D. C. observer's take on Sen. Hagan's Senate work

An article on the N&O site written by RENEE SCHOOF

rschoof@mcclatchydc.com  September 20, 2014:

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan prefers stairs to elevators and escalators. She shoots down congressional corridors so fast she leaves attending staff members struggling to keep up.

Tholl-Road Thom meets Lane-Closing Christie in an orgy for over-sized egomaniacs

Big fundraising to-do in Wilmington last night, when the sleaziest governor in America, Chris Christie, showed up to support the sleaziest candidate in America, Thom Tillis. A good time was had by all.

And Christie, who said he couldn't wait to shake hands with all the protesters, quietly ducked out the back door and escaped without meeting a single person.

Birds of a feather, couple a scumbags, whatever. Tillis is toast.

Tillis, Berger & McCrory rush new legislation outlawing elitism

This is satire. Please take it in the humorous spirit in which it is written.

Both houses of the North Carolina legislature rushed into late night session to pass legislation outlawing elitism in North Carolina and Governor Pat McCrory signed it this morning saying, "This is an important law to protect average North Carolinians from being discriminated against. I wish it had been in place before I selected our poet laureate. She was held to much higher standards than the average poet could meet. That isn't fair. Average people deserve a chance to get awards too."

The law addresses several areas where Tillis, Berger, and McCrory felt average North Carolinians were losing out:

NC Scholars

The NC Scholars program was started in 1983 to designate those high school students with high academic performance. The NC Scholars program will now recognize all students with a GPA of 2.0 and higher.

Thom Tillis timeline of attacks on real North Carolinians

Earlier this week I took a jab at Thom Tillis on Father's Day in honor of all the dads in North Carolina who are struggling under failed Republican policies pushed through the NCGA by Tillis and the Republican leadership. While it was a fun post to write, it really didn't shine a bright enough light on the problems dads (and moms) face in North Carolina. Allow me to close out Thom Tillis Day by correcting that.

The following are just a few of the many ways that Thom Tillis has shown a lack of respect for the citizens of this state and the ways that he has hurt North Carolina citizens and families by attacking them where and when they are most vulnerable.

Follow below the fold for the evidence...

GOP Twitter Wars

It seems my Father's Day gift to Thom Tillis offended some Republicans and they took to Twitter to let me know just how they feel. Mark Cates of Asheville was offended that I would use a high holy Hallmark holiday to criticize good ol' "traditional" Thom, while No Status Quo called me a "condescending POS" as he or she hid behind the safety of a pseudonym.

My Father's Day gift to Thom Tillis

On this Father's Day I can't help but think about all the senior dads, the disabled dads, the uninsured dads, the gay dads, the dads who are teachers, the dads working three minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet, and the long-term unemployed dads who are still looking for jobs - all dads who have been hurt by the mean-spirited actions of Thom Tillis and his fellow Republicans in the North Carolina legislature.
