Thom Tillis

Tillis and Trump

I’ve never had much use for Richard Burr or Thom Tillis. Burr is a slacker frat boy, with literally nothing to show for his many years in Congress. Tillis, on the other hand, spends most of his time coddling and covering the many crimes of Donald Trump. Both are guilty of failing to uphold their oaths of office.

Think about this, North Carolina

Our two US Senators voted for a tax bill that neither had read. Nor had either of their staffs. The bill was written by lobbyists for Mitch McConnell, who also has not read the bill. And to think that we, the citizens of North Carolina, are paying these clowns to represent us. They should be sued for failing to uphold their oaths of office.

The NRA has invested over ten million in Burr & Tillis

Don't expect any sensible gun regulations any time soon:

NRA groups have spent nearly $7 million on behalf of Burr. That includes $5.6 million that NRA groups spent last year against his Democratic opponent, Deborah Ross. That was more than the NRA spent against any candidate with the exception of Hillary Clinton.

And Tillis has gotten $4.5 million in help, including independent expenditures against his 2014 opponent, then-incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan.

Considering there have been 273 mass shootings (4 or more people shot) in the last year, it's not a huge stretch to describe this as blood money. You know what else this signifies? The NRA was scared shitless they could lose these statewide races in North Carolina. You know, like they did when Roy Cooper retook the Governor's mansion for the Democratic Party. Think on that.

The Tillis Toxicity

If this blog post sounds like an episode of Big Bang Theory, it should. BBT specializes in the ridiculous, featuring a hilarious mix of incompetence, dysfunction, and out-sized egos. One show was called The Anxiety Optimization, which could have been a commentary on the state of our nation.

But back to Tillis.

Thom Tillis and Hurricane Matthew

Back in January, Thom Tillis joined Roy Cooper in announcing that North Carolina would receive $198 million to help North Carolina recover from Hurricane Matthew. Unfortunately, what North Carolina really needed was another $900 million. Which is why Tillis and Cooper teamed up again to ask President Trump for more help.

Tillis MIA too

Richard Burr is rightfully getting skewered for allowing our democracy to be held ransom to Russian oligarchs, but don't forget there's another senator supposedly representing North Carolina, Thom Tillis. Though a lightweight in his first term, Tillis is nonetheless a United States Senator, and as such, has enormous power should he choose to exercise it.

Dear historians

Looking back on America in the early 21st century, it's clear that one of the great near-misses for democracy was the short-lived presidency of Donald Trump. A con man through and through, Trump flaunted his power like cokehead tweeting porn at three in the morning, daring anyone to challenge him.

Do Burr and Tillis listen?

In a word, no.

By my count, both senators have received many thousands of calls and emails from worried constituents over the past week. Their voice mail boxes are full. And what is the result of those calls? Nothing. Both men voted to begin dismantling ACA, without even the illusion of a viable replacement plan. Of course, Trump has promised a magnificent alternative. Bigly indeed. Just like he promised Mexico would pay to build his wall.

Does any Republican Senator have a conscience?

I expect nothing resembling a conscience from people like Thom Tillis and Richard Burr. Those two are old school greeders, driven by nothing but self interest. Bank Run Burr got his name for a reasons, and he's slightly worse than Tillis. But both are shameless partisan whores. Power and money are the only currencies they operate with. The common good is an irrelevant concept.
