Young Democrats of North Carolina
I wanted to give you all a brief overview of what happened this weekend at the YDs of NC convention. First, there were two informative sessions that all those who did not attend should kick themselves for missing. The first session was entitled “Internet Campaigning and Communication,” and the presenters were Ed Cone and Chris Bowers. These two presenters were both interesting and informative. Also, BlueNC should know they got some love from both men; BlueNC was held up as an example as a well-run blog, so don’t be surprised if some new readers begin hanging around. While some in the crowd were obviously new to political blogging, I saw that as a good thing. I could see light bulbs clicking on as Cone and Bowers described how blogs can encourage and even push stories into the mainstream media. Both bloggers agreed that blogging by itself is great but there have to be live events to encourage and increase enthusiasm among readers.
The second session was entitled “Getting Started in a Political Career” and featured Christy Agner, Morgan Jackson, and Courtney Crowder. Each of the above are former (and one still current) YDs who now make a living in politics. These three pros discussed their backgrounds and experience and gave advice on what to do (it’s all about relationships) and what not to do.
Lunch brought numerous speakers including Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, Congressman Brad Miller, and the keynote speaker, Congressman Artur Davis (Alabama-7th District). Congressman Davis gave an inspiring speech, one I could not easily encapsulate in this small space. But, what I did notice was that Congressman Davis used no notes but gave a wonderful talk.
Tony McEwen, YDNC president, and Jerry Meek have out this years awards. I must apologize for the below partial list, but here are most of the awards:
Top 5 Young Democrat Award: Jeremy Canipe, Yancey County
Top 5 Young Democrat Award: Kara Hollingsworth, Cumberland County
Top 5 Young Democrat Award: Ty Stumpf, Lee County
Young Democrat of the Year: J. Todd Kennedy
Chapter of the Year: UNC College Democrats
As I said, the above is a partial list. Anyone want to fill in the gaps?
After lunch, we moved to voting for office holders. I must compliment all who were nominated on running respectful, professional campaigns. Below are the new office holders for the YDNC for 2007-2008:
Zack Hawkins, President
Melissa Price, VP
Ty Stumpf, Secretary
Dan Spuller, Treasurer
Kara Hollingsworth, Committeewoman
Sam Hyde, Committeeman
Lastly, all those left took a picture to send to Elizabeth Edwards with our love. I must admit that may have been the most touching moment of the convention.
All said, this was a great convention. It was informative, fun, and professional. Next year should be just as great.
