Yard Sign Violence

So I snapped this pic with my phone this morning as it was the third shredded one I ran across while leaving Greensboro to head to work this morning.

Now I’m an old-tymer. I am well aware that yard signs are the most common victims of campaign violence. However, I was concerned when we received a phone call from a concerned voter who stated that there were Ovittore signs in a closet at an early voting site.

And the investigation begins.....

And so the dash to the early voting site led to the subsequent discovery of these torn signs in a closet.

No one had an answer as to why some of the signs that were less damaged were removed from the polling site and were sitting in the back in the hall. We then heard from a friend that the yard signs were removed from the early voting site near him as well. Then yet another phone call from a supporter stating the one in his yard disappeared and could he get another.

It's an epidemic!

So we're fighting back. I am asking for our friends to keep an eye out for these acts of vandalism. Replace any damaged signs you see with a fresh one (holla if you need some!). And please remove all carcass debris from the roadway. Give it a proper burial in a recycling bin. Give a hoot and all that…..

Oh and who is psyched to work the most exhausting yet most rewarding day ever? I am! Please drop me a line and join us out at the polls on Election Day, Tuesday, May 6. There are tons of campaigns that need volunteers so pick your faves, grab their literature, and let’s work together to make Election Day hugely successful!

You can contact me either via private message or at voteovittore@clearwire.net.

Oh and here is the obligatory, you can always ActBlue! Only 1 week left to Election Day! Get out there! Get involved!

Good luck.

Yard sign wars are ugly affairs. Good luck getting on top of it, because they really do matter in races where all the oxygen has been sucked away by Pres and Gov.

Nice to see you Sunday!

I know it's funner to believe in conspiracies ...

But it may well have been a case of the signs being placed in a spot where they were not allowed to be. Each polling site has regulations about where signs can and cannot be placed, and perhaps the signs were simply in an off-limits area and the elections folks obeyed the law and removed them.

I tend to agree

however, just received 2 more phone calls. These were about signs removed from yards within the last few hours. Crazy if the effort expended in stealing yard signs were to be put forth for good, oh what couldn't be accomplished?

Hehe.

Anyone else find the image of a posse of Coble's buddies (maybe four or five 77-year-old men?) joyriding around in fancy cars late at night snatching signs kind of amusing? :)

When you're a kid you're always told that "grownups don't act like that," but when you grow up you just find out that grownups still act like that, they just wear suits while doing it.

I've Been Getting...

I've been getting calls and e-mails all day about yard signs being mauled or disappearing all together. Some one is spending a lot of time on this in Guilford County. I expect this from Republican's in November, but I am running against Democrats. Sad, when our party is pulling plays out of the Republican play book!

Isn't necessarily your

Isn't necessarily your primary opponent. Plus, my image above is funnier when it's grumpy Republicans. :)

I hate to tell you this

But Republicans and Democrats pretty much share the same playbook when it comes to dirty tricks!

Hmmm.

Maybe so.

In my experience, the Democrats are at least better looking.

Also, in MY experience, Democrats don't play that way as often, but that's just my experience. Maybe too many pros are trying to come over to our side now that the Rethuglicans are on their way out.

Senseless violence and desecration!

I don't understand it. I have candidates I've voted for - and then there are all Democrats. I want all signs up - legally.

We've got our Ovittore signs up, and as a matter of fact, there are Bratton, and I think Carter signs, too.

We're ready to roll in Moore County.

Congratulations on your first post, caseymann.

I know, right?

It's my first, but definitely not my last. I was encouraged by the well attending Blogger Bash. And now I feel liberated! Now if I can only figure out how to put a picture up when I comment I'm set.

Picture in the text or an avatar?

If you want your mug in the header, then go to "My Account" in the left hand column, "Edit", then do what the directions say. I do think the headshot needs to be about 80x80.

As for the sign violence, if I have time I'll take pics of the three signs that fell apart in Chapel Hill.

When I was putting out signs at voting locations I made sure they allowed signs. There were three or four that I crossed-off because they did not allow signs. I wouldn't have known it without looking it up on the OC BOE site.

D'oh!

I thought, but did not think. I saw, but did not see.

None of Jay's signs are disintegrating in Chapel Hill.

You would think

that in the 32+ weeks I've been a member I would have dug into it a little more. And here I was proud for using the frequently asked questions to do my mad html work. Thanks Mr. P!

About the yard signs, I'm not sure they were Ovittore signs in Chapel Hill as its a little out of his district. I've heard that a couple of campaigns had problems with yard signs falling apart due to the heavy rain, however, when I cleaned up the carnage from the yard sign pictured, one could clearly see how it had been torn. Not to say that none of the missing signs did not succumb to the weather.

Oh, and the sites were early voting sites and were placed properly. We're holding off on the Election Day sites until the night before.

Signs at Craft Rec Center in Greensboro

Casey, the two signs you had at the entrance to the driveway disappeared last week. I thought you'd moved them closer to the building but someone may have taken them.

Thanks for the heads up

Any other district folks notice a voting site missing an Ovittore sign (as I believe we've hit them all), please let me know. Guess we'll spend our Wednesday phone bank night distributing yard signs as well. Takers?

I can help with that

I was planning to check on Jim Neal's signs anyway. Let me know where to pick them up.

Excellent

Sent you a pm with the digits.

- William G. McAdoo

Go Casey!

I'm not in the district, but make sure you follow through with complaints to the BOE about signs being "stored" in the closet. I don't ever recall rules about how many signs can be out, only the distance they have to be from the entrance. (That's in Mecklenburg.)

Send Jay our best.

Looks like some one or a bunch of some ones are a little afraid of the Ovittore campaign...heh.

You might visit county DOT offices.

I check out our local DOT office/garage a couple of times an election season to see what signs they have collected. Mowers crews, work crews, overzealous DOT folks in general can all pick up signs for reasons real or imagined.

Also, there are the dreaded mowers ... (cue Jaws soundtrack)

AAaaaahhhhhh!!!!....

Person County Democrats

I actively oppose gerrymandering. Do you?

Or the code enforcement office

Here in Southern Pines, there are probably at least 100 signs piled behind the Planning office. All candidates and parties appear to be equal opportunity offenders of the town's sign ordinances.

Did someone say yard signs???

I think you guys are posting these just to draw my ire.

Yard sign vandalism/theft makes me angrier than just about anything. Curse me, fine. Spit in my face, OK. Harm one of my strategically place yard signs, and we have a problem.

The signs should be a)alloted to sign hangers who b)strategically place them and then c)report the placement to the campaign.

Signs should be checked at least once per week by the sign hanger who should repair disheveled signs and replace if possible.

If more than two signs go missing in the hanger's area, or if a sign in a specific location is stolen or defamed more than once, the violation should be reported to the campaign, who should then file a police report.

I have planted signs in the rain, snow, and dead of night. I have skipped across busy intersections. All in the name of signage. If I had ever found someone messing with my signs, I would..heck, I don't know what I would do.

So there is my sign rant again. Note this does not apply to signs placed on personal property, as that is the business of the property owner. But public signs MUST be respected.

In my case, the Yard sign thefts are very open. It's candidates.

In my case here in the 3rd District where my campaign has put out 350 signs, in some cases, where my Marshall Adame for Congress signs dissappear, signs for my opponent appear right in the exact spot.

Not to hard to figure that out. For the record, I have not removed or damaged a single sign and have asked those assisting me to respect the other candidates signs as well, even in the cases where an opponents sign appears in the exact spot where my sign dissappears.

thanks Robert

it has become apparent that this has been happening in Wake and Orange. Alos, I was informed that sign stealing (even from public right of ways) is a felony crime. So if anyone is caught there are real repercussions.

Please respect the law

You can't put signs on the highway...it's against the law. Candidates get a letter that has all relevant statues including below. If your signs were in the public right away, I congratulate the DOT or relevant agency for doing their job.

19A NCAC 02E .0415 ADVERTISING SIGNS WITHIN RIGHT OF WAY

It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to erect or place any advertising or other sign, except regulation traffic and warning signs approved by the Department of Transportation, on any highway or the right of way thereof, or so as to overhang the right of way, or to permit the erection or placing of any advertising or other sign, as herein prohibited, on any highway right of way which is situated over any land owned, rented, leased or claimed by such person, firm or corporation. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or other corporation that has erected, or placed, or permitted to be erected or placed, any advertising or other sign, as herein prohibited, or for any person, firm or corporation owning, renting, leasing or claiming any land over which a highway or highway right of way is situated, and on which highway or highway right of way any advertising or other sign has been erected or placed, to allow such advertising or other signs to remain on state highway or right of way thereof.

Pick a sign...

I realize that most of this thread is about signs in private spaces which I fully support but I just can't resist...

I don't know what is more pathetic...1) People running for office who make the laws (and some who even enforce the laws like judges and AG) that insist on placing their signs in the right of way. There must be 25 or 30 at the intersection near my house. One is stapled to a stop sign! Not only is it dangerous but it is ILLEGAL! 2) The apathy and/or ignorance of a society who determines who they are going to vote for by reading a name on a sign.

God bless American...where the prettiest sign wins!

Someone is sabotaging Hampton's signs in Raleigh

And it's not the weather. The weather leaves them wrinkled and hanging limply on the wires.

I've found them all over town, crumpled and tossed aside, the only one of dozens of candidates taken down. AT EVERY EARLY VOTE LOCATION.

Zeb Smathers, Morgan Jackson and Frank Eaton, I know neither you nor your candidates have authorized or condoned this kind of petty crap. Please send a message to your supporters not to do this. I will do the same - and do so now on behalf of Hampton. Those signs at polling places were legitimately placed, not in the right of way, and voters have a right to see all their options, not just those some two-bit vandal decides to leave up.

If I catch the guy doing this in the act, I am going to start with the small bones and work towards the large ones.

"Hampton Dellinger WILL be a great Lieutenant Governor." - Al Gore.

"Man is free at the moment he wishes to be." -Voltaire

DFL - there were some Dellinger signs here that really did

disintegrate in the rain. I saw it with my own eyes. I called his key person here and asked him to replace it, and he said that one whole batch they received were doing that.

I'm not saying that there isn't some deliberate destruction going on - but I know that one batch of your guy's signs didn't hold up to last weekend's bad weather, at least here.

The deliberate destruction and removal of signs is disgusting, and undemocratic.

But I've started thinking more about this since Casey first mentioned this to me the other day.

We're Democrats - and we're supposed to care about the environment. Why are we putting up campaign signs? Do they really make a difference? What does research say?

Honestly? If we put together all of the money spent on signs in the Democratic Primary just in NC - excluding the Presidential Race - that would buy a lot of air time. Maybe even enough to have the county conventions broadcast over a network so that candidates didn't have to run from county to county all on one day, saving lots of energy (h/t to Leslie H.) It would buy air time for debates for US Senate Races so that we wouldn't have to wait for a college TV station to look kindly on us to host it. I know - it would require candidates agreeing on how money should be spent. And that wouldn't ever happen.

Not when they can't even stop their people from tearing up each other's signs.

Pointing at Naked Emperors

there is in fact

a batch that did not perform well.

BUt "not performing well" and ending up perfectly firm but ripped in half, balled up and thrown in a ditch down the street are not the same things.

Some of both is going on.

Bah.

"Hampton Dellinger WILL be a great Lieutenant Governor." - Al Gore.

"Man is free at the moment he wishes to be." -Voltaire

That sucks, DFL.

I try to make a sweep past all the known dem sign spots in the southern part of my county and either fix the signs that have fallen, or make calls if the signs need to be replaced - even if they are not candidates I'm personally supporting. No one can be more passionate about the candidates they support than I can, but damn - you can be fair.

I want to lay this on republicans. Can I? Please?

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
Pointing at Naked Emperors

Nothing new, really. But so uncool!

In 2006 we witnessed similar things in Moore County. Place a sign, it gets moved and the opponent's sign is magically in it's place. (David Copperfield may be a Moore County Republican!) Place a sign and they come along and sandwich yours, obscuring the view. The amazing thing (to me) was that it would always be the same 2 or 3 candidates signs, grouped.

On a lighter note - pollworking is fun

On Sunday, I met the former saxophone player for Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts and Wilson Pickett. He came in driving a vintage Checy from the 1930s, with a HUGE engine dropped in the front of it.

I also met a man today who registered and voted for the first time. He is 73, and I showed him my flyer of Obama and Hampton and he pointed at Obama and said, "that's the man right there. That's why I'm voting."

Pretty dang cool.

Signs

To the entire BlueNC community,

On behalf of the campaign, we strongly denounce anyone participating in sign sabotage. Any person or group found doing so needs to be reprimanded immediately. We have instructed all of our campaign volunteers to inform us of anyone taking, damaging, or stealing the signs of any campaign, Democrat or Republican. We too have suffered sign theft in the Chapel Hill and Raleigh area. However, I am confident this election will not be about signs, but the ideas and hard work of the campaigns. No matter the results of Tuesday, all the candidates should judge and be judged based on the manner in which it was achieved. Any victory achieved by cheating, deception, or underhanded methods should be seen as hollow and against the very principles we as Democrats believe in. I hope all us move into the future of this election season with clean consciences.

It has been a pleasure being involved with Dad’s campaign. The people I have met across this state have been a true blessing. I look forward to working with everyone in the years to come to make our communities, our state, and a nation a little better…

Best wishes,
Zeb

PS-James thank you for your hospitality on Sunday. It was a wonderful afternoon. It is an honor to not just think of you and the BlueNC community as fellow citizens committed to change, but as friends. I look forward to future opportunities.
