Will I be arrested today?

There are times in life when business as usual won’t get the job done, when the best of intentions and hard work are not enough. This is one of those times. Freedom and fairness are at grave risk in North Carolina. Extraordinary action is required.

I have a granddaughter who will grow up in this state. I will not stand by and let a gang of Republican thugs trash her future by destroying our environment, our schools, and our economy.

Over the past two years, I have sought countless opportunities to meet with Republican leaders to share my concerns. I have not received a single response. I haven’t paid their price of admission. I haven't written them big checks. They don’t care what I have to say. And they don't care what you have to say. That would be okay if Republicans had won in fair elections, but they didn't. They cheated. Through extreme gerrymandering, they barely won half the votes, yet still gained supermajorities in both houses. They do not represent the people of North Carolina.

Everyone comes to Moral Monday with a unique set of concerns and demands. Mine are very specific. Republicans in North Carolina have rigged our elections through extreme gerrymandering, to the point that our government cannot be considered legitimate. To restore democracy, lawmakers must redraw our legislative districts in time for the 2014 election cycle. Once we have new districts, members of the General Assembly must resign and stand for new elections.

There’s some movement in the legislature toward nonpartisan redistricting, but it won’t have any impact until at least 2022. If nonpartisan redistricting is going to be a good idea nine years from now, it’s a better idea today.

Integrity has broken down in our state. We the people have an obligation to push back with every ounce of our collective strength to foster freedom and fairness. If that means going to jail, so be it.

This is a fantastic post, James. It gets to the heart of the matter and says it so well.

This is how we the people eventually WILL get their attention and they WILL listen to us. But we have much to do.

"I will have a priority on building relationships with the minority caucus. I want to put substance behind those campaign speeches." -- Thom Tillis, Nov. 5, 2014

Thank you

And thanks to everybody else who has done/is doing this. It's more than just a statement of discontent, it's performing a service and a sacrifice for all the people of our state. Many may not see it as such yet, but I think they will down the road.

Rec'd & tipped

I know folks coming from New Bern, Rocky Mount, Greenville, and across eastern NC for this. It's really going to be a big day. If anyone doubts the power of blogging, just putting the word "mega" into the mix has done so much to really focus the rallying cry around an energy that was out there and ready to take action. I'm looking forward to being there this evening.

The latest I've heard is that they're having to move people to the Halifax Mall behind the General Assembly instead of the Bicentennial Mall in front of the General Assembly just because the turnout is looking to be huge. I'm sure there will be people there directing people around though.

#2 on the Rec list

Not sure if they still rescue and/or do a summary of top diaries, but it would definitely qualify for one of those.

"Ignore Your Rights and They'll Go Away."

From a quote on a magnet.

James, you are playing a powerful role in promoting the will to "Not Ignore/Wake Up". It is so exciting to see so many others doing likewise. All of you bring deep gratitude and renewed enthusiasm to so many of us.

always have the coolest stuff on them.

Thanks for posting this ... and for the kind words.
