There are a ton of reasons why I think that Rudy will represent the Republicans in November of 2008. But, that guess is something that almost anyone could make.
However, the question that the press has been struggling with is, "Will Rudy's social positions hurt him?" Or, "Why have they not hurt him yet?"
Well, I think I have an answer to that question.
In his many books, Lakoff talks about the differences between progressives and conservatives. One of the big points of importance is the differences between family structure.
The core part of this is that for most conservatives, a strong Father figure is the only acceptable family structure.
We see this in many aspects of the Bush Administration. Whether it is signing statements, Cheney's energy meetings or "emboldening the enemy" the theme of the Bush Administration is that the President should hold all the power.
Even now, while 3/4 of the country is disgusted with George Bush, he has almost complete support amongst Republican Primary voters. Why? Because he is the President. For these core Republicans, you dont ask the President how high when he tells you to jump. You simply continue to jump as high as possible until he tells you to stop.
But, what does all of this have to do with Rudy? Throughout Rudy's career and even within his social positions there is one common theme. Control and Power.
Rudy ruled New York City with an iron fist. Most of us know that. However, even in his supposedly liberal social positions there remains the same constant. Rudy supports gun control. He does not bother talking about things such as gun safes and trigger locks. No. He talks about registration and databases.
We're not gonna let you.
On every issue Rudy believes in control. He absolutely believes in a strong executive branch. He is a former mayor. A mayor who grabbed almost absolute control over the largest city in the country.
That is why Rudy's social positions dont matter to the base. That is why conservatives will continue to volunteer no matter who is nominated. Because this isnt about principled stands on very specific issues. This is about an absolute belief in a strong executive. In the continuation of things such as the Patriot Act. Rudy will only lose the nomination if he starts to talk about personal liberties in the wrong area. So long as he talks about civil liberties only in a very abstract way, while believing in an authoritarian right wing system of government, Rudy has nothing to worry about.
Those of us who believe in things like the constitution...well...be afraid. Be very afraid.

Some great points
To further illustrate your point, I'd add that whenever a party is on the verge of "wilderness time," they look to whomever might keep them in power. It becomes all about winning. I think true conservatism and true liberalism--the push and pull between these two ideologies, is what makes this country great. But Rudy is neither conservative or liberal---he's just a true fascist. Paternalism at its best.
That's why, even though he agrees with us liberals on gun control and gay rights, we still loathe him all the more. Because we know that once in power, he'll try to crush us.

absolutely
There are definitely people willing to swallow their pride to get a win. Republicans are seeing huge drops in the north east, so they want to nominate Rudy or Romney.
But, I think a lot of us do that on both sides. HELLLLOOOOO John Kerry.

His slogan should have been. . .
John Kerry, because you just want to win.
But to give him credit, at least he was a true liberal---I loved him before the Deaniac implosion at the media's sword. He was just too milquetoast to win in the general election, and, in my case, I was blinded by his resume. I kept telling people, "You gotta love a guy who not only volunteered for Vietnam, but also came home and led protests!"
So glad we can get out of Iraq AND Vietnam for the 08 cycle!

I hope Rudy gets the nom
because I think we'll beat him with any candidate we run against him. There is a lot about Rudy that the folks in those "middle states" don't know....
like how he was married to his cousin
and how he know about Berni Kerik's mob ties when he hired him
and how he carried on an affair with his future 3rd wife in one wing of the Mayor's mansion while his current (2nd) wife lived in the other wing
and how he informed wife #2 that he was divorcing her in a press conference
and how Rudy picked the only location on US soil that had been attacked by foreign terrorists (WTC '93) to be his 'Emergency Command Post', calling it Ground Zero....which is why he was photographed walking around Lower Manhatten on 9/11 since his bunker got crushed and he had no place to go
and how he tried to nullify the election results in '01 to keep himself in office as a result of 9/11
and how he....Oh, you get my point.

Married to his cousin?
That should win him the south. :)
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

And Rudy is the single greatest threat
not only to the election, but to the United States. People look at him like a hero. A god in some circles.
i think before 9/11 Guiliani was a good character, someone not to hell bent on total control. but even with his sweeping Time Square plan, literally sweeping people "away", this new Rudy is scary.
of course we all love his moderate social views as progressives. but it comes at a heavy cost.

Actually,
before 9/11 Rudy was really un-popular. NYers knew him to be a bully, the ultimate insider crony-politician, and someone who cared more about busting up "indecent" art shows, blaming teenagers for breaking curfew after they were wrongly shot by the cops and driving homeless people over the bridge into Jersey (literally) than getting to the root of crime/homelessness in NYC.
9/11 happened and suddenly Rudy was "America's Mayor" because of the images of him with the sooty clothes walking through the streets of lower Manhatten.
But we all know what REALLY happened...before and after 9/11. And if Middle America doesn't know it yet, they will by the end of this campaign.

I guess I should have said
Was a better character than today.
I remember my parents views on him when we were there.
But you're right. 9/11 made him America's Mayor b/c people just saw him like they did Bush. A false hero. Don't matter what happened before or what they did, all that matters is what they see now.
I hope Middle America finds it out period before any election occurs.

Oh, and I saw the JJ pictures. How can you draft Brad with an untrimmed beard? Just more proof that it's going to be Roy Cooper.

No, thanks. We've had quite enough of petty dictators; we'd like our democracy back now, please.
