Where's Your Buddy Abramoff Now, Congressman Taylor?

{first published at Scrutiny Hooligans}

Heath Shuler is dominating the fundraising in his race against the tainted Taylor. I heard the news last night, and Real Values (via the hub of citizen journalism on North Carolina politics, BlueNC) has the numbers up today. No link, sorry. I'm posting this in a hurry, and you can go see the FEC documents for yourself.

Here's the numbers:

For the first filing quarter of 2006
Taylor $175,635
Shuler $338,682

Total Cash on Hand
Taylor $99,510 (!)
Shuler $552,304

Taylor's capable of pouring as much money as he wants into the race, of course. He's not afraid to toss his wad into the pot, because he's in permanent fund raising mode. At the end of the last quarter, Taylor finished paying himself back for all the money he sank into the '04 race against Patsy Keever.

With numbers like this, Shuler is sure to attract even more attention from the national party, and we can count on this being the most expensive race in the district's history. As Taylor is drawn further and further into the sordid tale of Jack Abramoff and as long as he continues to obfuscate, deflect, and distort, the Congressman will become more and more vulnerable.

Some will say, "He may be a crook, but he's my crook." We hope they'll stay home on voting day. With Republican approval ratings circling the rim of the political toilet, watch this race attract netroots attention as one of the country's top ten House races. Shuler's early lead gives his campaign the financial gravitational mass to draw donors from individuals and from the national party organizations.

Screwy - We're both on the recommended list! Now I'll go comment.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

All over it

Nice post.

who's the mean-looking guy

in the photograph. He don't look too happy.

Great job, Screwy. I keep posting this comment everywhere, though: Please please please, no one get complacent. Altho Chuckie is a mean, sorry skinflint, he is a multi-multi-multi millionaire and when the going gets tough he is going to pull out all the stops.

I would tell you what he's going to say but I don't want to give him any ideas. I hear his memory is bad . . .

The Mean-Looking Guy

is John Snow. He came to Hendersonville last week, and Taylor wouldn't allow the public to the meeting. He made a visit by a sitting Secretary a private event.

The picture doesn't have much relevance to the post, but I love the way Snow is looking at Taylor. He's got that "Yeah, right." look on his face.

I remember the coverage

in the Hendersonville Times-News, where Dem. County Chair Eva Ritchey got in a lick or two about it. It was my second post as a blogger! (Look how, after three weeks, I shamelessly self-promote.)

Too bad his name is the same as our Sen. Snow. I thought that's who you meant at first.

Either way, it's not a nice photo for out boy, Chuck.
