The primary voting is about to begin.
When it is over we'll know who will be running on the Democratic ticket against Liddy Dole, Bob Dole's wife.
That's Bob Dole of Kansas.
That's Bob Dole, who never lived in and does not now live in NC. I'm not sure where Bob lives now, Kansas or DC, but he don't live here.
Liddy Dole was born and raised in NC, but she left for Harvard as soon as she had that Duke degree and NEVER looked back.
Liddy and Bob loved political life in DC, though. Bob ran for President. Liddy was Secretary of this and that and the other thing. Here is a snippet about Liddy's wild success in the big city:
Despite her identification with liberal consumer issues and former support for ERA, Dole received strong backing from the conservative Reagan administration. Critics, however, viewed her commitment to important issues as secondary to her ambition. The Chicago Tribune questioned the logic that transformed her from a "Democrat who had worked for President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society to a Republican who pampered big business, from a federal trade commissioner who decried big-business mergers to a Secretary of Transportation who sanctioned almost every airline merger that came her way. The Washington Monthly summarized this feeling when it observed that, instead of an ideologue, Dole was "the consummate role player, her positions defined by her job description rather than deeply felt beliefs".
Then one day in 2001 the GOP tapped her, asked her to buy her Mom's house in Salisbury and change her legal residence to NC so she could run for Jesse Helms' seat. She did. On August 24, 2001 she terminated her voter registration in Kansas. But Bob Dole did not. Bob stayed in Kansas.
Bob Dole still lives in Kansas. Six years after his wife supposedly became a Senator from NC, Bob Dole still lives in Kansas. In fact, I don't even think Bob Dole voted for his wife in the 2002 Senate election. I don't think he could. I think Bob Dole voted in Kansas. He sure didn't live in NC and I never saw any report that he had changed his voter registration when his wife changed hers in August, 2001. He doesn't live in NC now. Bob Dole doesn't know NC from b.f. Egypt. Over the last 5/6 years it has become painfully clear that his wife knows NC almost as well.
Which is not surprising, honestly, because before she came tromping through here on her Senate run she hadn't been in these parts in 4 decades, since she was 20 years old, except to visit Mother. Admirable for a daughter, but a few days a year visiting your mom in another state is not enough to give you a real feel for what life there is like, or what the people in that state care about or need or want, is it?
Sad part is, nothing has changed since 2002. Bob still lives in Kansas.
Although Liddy and Bob did visit NC to vacation last year. Isn't that ... ummm ... nice. ???
So, here is our task: On May 7th -- or at least by the 8th -- you go and get you (and your spouse) a sign and a sticker or a t-shirt or a button or a hat with our Senate candidate's name on it and you display their name somewhere in your yard, on your vehicle or on your person. Liddy Dole is just too old to keep pretending she's from NC anymore. Liddy may be the consummate role player, but this game is getting tired. We need a real Senator from NC.
Either Kay Hagan or Jim Neal (the two front runners) will do a far FAR superior job representing all the people of NC than Liddy Dole has done. Let us commit ourselves now to making sure one of them gets to do that. I'm voting for Jim on May 6th, but I'll be working for the Democratic nominee on May 7th. Period.
