Weekend Woundup 12/6

If you have spare change or spare time this weekend you can take part in one of two - probably more - rewarding events.

First, in response to Ruby's call to counter hate by raising money for a good candidate, Mark Kleinschmidt, Mark has in turn enouraged us to raise money for a good cause. It's simple. The more they hate, they more money we raise for the greater good.

Second, Anglico and Jane are hosting a fundraiser for senate candidate Jim Neal at their beautiful home in Chapel Hill. Suggested donation of $50 is not required. Take this opportunity to learn more about Jim.

What's on your plate this weekend?

Watch the snow melting

We got around 3 or 4 inches night before last and it's supposed to flurry some more tonight. Helps me not miss winter in my former home 4 miles from Pineola and all those Christmas trees!

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

coughing,kicking,schmoozing

I don't know about anyone else, but I have slid into another coughing/congestion/sore throat morass, and I have now decided that flu shot I got at Kerr Drug was a fake from China.

However, I have a nice little rental car - the woman who delivered it was from Louisiana and we spent the whole time driving to the dealer discussing Katrina. She has only been here a few months, and we discussed Cajun relatives.

Tonight, once I have slugged down more cough medicine, I take my son to test for his BLACK BELT in tae kwon do. Saturday we go to Chinese class, and Sunday to the cool kids get-together at Anglico's to meet Jim Neal. Can't wait to see folks, and hope my son is able to entertain himself somehow. If not, we will diplomatically slip out before he drives everyone crazy.

Good luck to the Progressives on Sat!

I'll be at my church for a quiet day of Advent meditations, but best of luck to the Progressives with their convention Sat. Wish I could join them, at least in the afternoon!

I suppose it would be inappropriate to lobby them to endorse the "right" candidate for Lt. Gov., if they choose to do so. So I'll just say, I hope they look at the records of all the candidates, look at what they've accomplished (more than what they just 'say'), and choose whom you think will be an authentic Progressive candidate who will still remember your names after Election Day. ;)

It was a great day for Progressives!

Thanks for your well wishes. We voted to endorse a candidate and Besse won in a landslide I'd say and the Blog initiative passed.

O'Reilly: DKos Readers Are "Devil Worshippers"

On Fox News yesterday, Bill O’Reilly let loose on “far-left websites” like DailyKos, stating, “If you read these far-left websites, you’re a devil worshipper. You are.” O’Reilly’s ombudsman responded, “As a journalist, you know better than that.” O’Reilly shot back: “Satan is running the DailyKos. Yes, he is!”

That's such b.s.

O'Reilly is such a liar. Everybody knows Karl Rove wants nothing to do with blogs of any kind.

Iran stops selling oil in U.S. dollars

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has completely stopped selling any of its oil for U.S. dollars, an Iranian news agency reported on Saturday, citing the oil minister of the world's fourth-largest crude producer.

The ISNA news agency did not give a direct quote from Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari. A senior oil official last month said "nearly all" of Iran's crude oil sales were now being paid for in non-U.S. currencies.

For nearly two years, OPEC's second biggest producer has been reducing its exposure to the dollar, saying the weak U.S. currency is eroding its purchasing power.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who often rails against the West, has called the U.S. currency a "worthless piece of paper."

US Dollars are worthless?

Oh darn...I'd better hurry up to the stores and finish spending my last cent before they get wind of it. :)

CLIFFSIDE and HEALTH CARE REFORM

We had a great speaker and discussion with over 100 people- at church. about cliffside coal plant and why it is a bad idea for NC to build a new coal plant right now. and what to do about it. Need to keep writing those letters- we have stopped the second plant, and we have slowed the remaining plant because of raising concerns about mercury. Just want to hope those folks believe in global warming. but letters have made a difference.

and
will meet this week with Health Care for All NC about how to work in our state with optimism about creating a better H C system.
and
collecting food for hungry people in the wealthiest county in our state. Why are so many people who work hungry? pay the rent or buy food? some choice.

Former Rutherford Cty Chair

Keith Price last Spring was going to 11th District Convention and 10th district meetings and pushing for resolutions supporting that plant. He was very aggressive and ugly to people who opposed it. At the 10th Convention many spoke against it and the resolution failed but I think when you get higher in government, there is little innovation and a lot of pandering to the wishes of old technology power companies.

Look at the behind-the-scenes manipulations of the four-to-one majority Democratic county commission in Buncombe to push through that diesel plant in Woodfin. Only because citizens raised a stink did it fail to get approval by the town of Woodfin.

What's your strategy to fight something when both Republicans and the Democratic establishment are working behind the scenes to make it happen?

Trivia question, DQ:

What's your strategy to fight something when both Republicans and the Democratic establishment are working behind the scenes to make it happen?

Without Googling, tell me what movie this quote came from:

"Establishment fall down go boom."

You successfully dodged the geek trap.

I, on the other hand, will have to gnaw through my ankle to get out. :(

The quote is from "The Andromeda Strain", which I (for some reason) connected to a recent comment from a conservative blogger who categorized Progressives as akin to being a virus. So...we're a virus, and we must attack establishment money-grabbers in both parties to bring about the greater good, and then...we can...

*sigh*

I lost the thread I was following. Which is probably a good thing. :)
