Weekend Wound Up: Open Thread 2/23

It's a foggy morning here in Union County. I stepped outside to hear the cows and all I could hear were bird songs. What a beautiful way to start the morning.

How are you starting your day? How will you end it?

This is your weekend open thread.

I'm starting my day with a quick cup of coffee and a long walk

I'll fill it with gardening/planting shrubs and research. I'm ending it with a birthday party for a sweetheart of an 8-yr-old girl. It will be a very good day.

How long has this been news? The CharO had it in today's paper. Perdue is staying neutral. I know how she feels.

Hey there! Guess what?!

Just found out that Union County is having its rain barrel and sapling sale today......only they're charging $2 per tree. I don't know how much they charge for rain barrels yet.

rain barrel sales

I was looking at our budget (Meck Soil and Water Conservation District), this year we had only budgeted $15,000 in barrel sales but so far this year we have sold over $64,000 worth of them. Not all of the extra sales are profit, we only make $5 per barrel but we are going to be able to fund a summer internship for a high school kid with the extra funds.

That is excellent!

Congratulations! What a great way to use the profits you did make. Next year increase the price by $5 and hire two interns. :D

Getting ready to be on the road...

Off to the fine metropolis of Ellerbe (Richmond Co.) for a meeting of the 8th District Exec. Committee. Get to find out what our district convention will look like ... Election 2008, Catch the Fever!

Excellent....I'd love to hear how it goes

Have a safe trip. Hope the roads aren't too slick.

Hey - wave as you go past Moore Co!

Have a great time, and get fired up, I have a feeling your convention will be an explosion of Democratic fervor! Perhaps the Blue will spill all over the state from there.

Water Forum

I'm here live blogging at the McKimmon Center with over 300 people attending the WakeUp Wake County Water Forum. Among the attendees are numerous concerned citizens, experts, elected officials, hopeful candidates and a lot of media.

Looks like a nice crowd attending

Let us know what you learn

One Down

Ronald Weatherford has announced that he is withdrawing from the Sixth District Congressional race. That will leave the two filed candidates, Bratton and Carter, and the soon-to-file Ovitorre.

I'm in Nebraska

Click here for more photos of my cross country trip but I'll post these here so you can see why we can't bring ourselves to leave Nebraska's Platte River valley. We're told in two weeks there'll be 500,000 sandhill cranes passing through. Early for heading north, wouldn't you think?

PS I took a photo of a guy digging his car out of a snow bank in Iowa but in deference to Sam I won't post it.

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

Well, even one goose (Canadian or snow)

encountering a jet engine means bye-bye jet.

What's funny is that this particular population of geese are on the property of a Military Vehicle museum right next to the interstate.

To see the geese up close you have to get past a group of vets (who clearly hang out here all the time) and then get escorted through a warehouse full of jeeps, and ambulances, tanks and all kinds of cool stuff. They say kids as young as six years old, come from all over and know more about the vehicles than they do, thanks to the History Channel.

Did you say you're headed to Oregon? If you are I need to introduce you to my friend TJ at Loaded Orygun (their state community blog) if you haven't already met. You can expand your blog family. Be safe.

Well, we might end up in Oregon

but right now we're going to Bremerton, WA where we have a place to stay while we check things out.

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

My sister is building a house

on the side of a hill across the bay overlooking Bremerton. From her back deck (on a clear day) you can see Mt. Ranier and parts of the Olympic range.

Bremerton's pretty neat, even if it does have some of the negative attributes of any decent-sized military base. There's a Seattle/Bremerton ferry that runs every hour-and-a-half or so, if you're inclined to take a day-trip over to the City.

How long will you be there?

Sorry to take so long to reply

We'll be staying at a friend's inlaw apartment and we don't know for how long. We'll see once we get there. She and her husband commute by ferry and bus to their jobs in Seattle every day (two hours each way for her!)

Sounds like your sister has an amazing place. We've been to Bremerton once and took the car ferry to Seattle but we never thought we'd be living there so we didn't pay too much attention.

It should all be interesting.

Weekend Chili Cook-Off

The first year we made "our" chili and finished almost dead last. Every year since I've tried something fancy and done no better. But, at least I got to eat 16 chili's and talk to some friends.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.
