Weekend wound-up: Labor Daze

Some odds and ends for the Labor Day weekend.

Time and money. A reporter inquired this week about who's paying me to blog six-plus hours a day. The answer, of course, is no one. BlueNC is a labor of love, pure and simple. Just to be clear, I do have a real job where I work half-time as a business writer. I telecommute, naturally.

Heart and soul. A different person asked me yesterday why I hate people whom I disagree with politically. I'm sorry it seems that way, because the truth is, I don't hate anyone except George Bush. I hate what some people are trying to do, but I have no malice toward them as individuals whatsoever. I simply want to stop them from destroying government institutions that have an important role in fostering the common good.

Ranting and raving. So why all the hard-edged blogging and ridicule of opponents? Because it works. When you're fighting against an agenda funded by the ruling corporate elite (and your budget is less than $50 a month) playing by their rules doesn't accomplish anything. If you adopt a strategy of "nice and patient," the media and the policy-makers will ignore you completely. Just ask the NO-OLF grannies.

Thanks and more thanks. It's been an interesting week at BlueNC. All heck is breaking loose in the Crazy World of Pat McHenry, and Drama Queen should be commended for doing hard work that the media did once upon a time. Beyond that, Women on Wednesdays is back after a summer hiatus, and in great form. Linda Cloud has graciously agreed to help keep BlueNC fresh and focused by joining our front-page team. And scores of other regulars, guests and visitors have kept the conversations going with great commentary, solid expertise, and pointed, respectful questions.

Thanks to each of you for all you do.

Wait, we're not paid?

then who keeps putting money under my door at work???

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I guess the new Jaguar has to go back, huh?

Another welcome eyebrow raiser ...

comes from Iowa via my googly reader ...

First paragraph:

In a sweeping ruling reminiscent of trial court decisions from Washington State, San Francisco, New York City, and Baltimore issued in the past several years, Robert B. Hanson, a trial judge in Des Moines, Iowa, ruled on August 30 that same-sex couples are entitled to marry, and that the state's Defense of Marriage Act, passed in reaction to the pioneering Hawaii marriage litigation dating back to the early 1990s, is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the state's statute books.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Saw that one last night, and was too tired to post about it.

They cited "equal protection under the law", which is what has always made sense to me. It's going to head to Iowa's Supreme Court next, I expect. I'm hoping this will help some of our more progressive presidential candidates (I'm looking at you, Mr. Edwards) "get there".

I've spent the day dealing with a major computer crash . . . and am so bummed out I can see straight. I'm borrowing a computer to let you know I won't be online this weekend, and probably not all week.

Oh No!

I'm so sorry. I would go through withdrawals. We'll keep old Blue up and running.....heck, I'll even try to piss some people off in your honor. :)

My heart skipped a beat

I was in Chapel Hill yesterday for the game. We brought a couple of friends, one of whom is also an alum. We planned on eating a late lunch at Peppers. We walked up to Peppers and it was CLOSED, BOARDED UP, NO FORWARDING ADDRESS!!!!! How could Peppers Close?!?!?!?!? I jumped on my handy smartphone and Googled Peppers because surely there was some press on the closing. About the same time the results came up, my wife noticed a Peppers sign a few stores west...

We were saved. Just a new location. Same great food and a similar atmosphere. Interestingly, not a single alternative hair color on any of the staff. I guess everyone can have an off day... Long live Peppers!

Thanks for posting this ..

I was in C-H a couple weeks ago with friends and we tried Peppers only to have the heart attack experience but we didn't spot the sign down the street. We thought Peppers was dead and gone.
Oh, good, good, good .... I can still have smoked turkey and bacon on a slice .... or two .... or three.
