UPDATED: Action was Needed on Same Day Voter Registration

Thanks to everybody who called or e-mailed, both at BlueNC and on my e-mail list. Jerry has affirmed his position in favor of H91/S195, so the crisis has been averted. They got the message due in no small part to your lobbying, and it's a good bet that S195 will pass now that the NCDP is behind it again. This is a major legislative victory for the NCYD, and YDs across the state, including the new leadership that will be sworn in at JJ, thank you for your efforts.

So where do we go from here?

After this bill passes in the Senate, it will be signed by Gov. Easley (who supports it) and it will enter into law ... but that doesn't mean that we wait until election day to recruit new voters. This means we still need to register as many voters as we can ASAP, while increasing our teams on election day. Less "poll workers" and more GOTV teams. More work on early voting days. I'm ready for it - are you?

While you're at it

Contact your county party and find out why they don't also allow same-day voter registration at their county conventions. :)

I'm emailing Dannelly

Will follow up with a call. He's not my senator, but met him on Saturday so will pretend like he is for now.

Tell me how it goes

I'd love to strike people off this list.

I called Malcolm too; he's your Senator as well, no?

Yup...Malcolm's my senator

I didn't see him on the list. Do you want me to call him too?

He's not on the Senate Select Committee on Government and Electi

ons, but this will be easier if we have as many Democrats as possible on the same page.

My contribution to the effort

I fully support Senate Bill 195 (Registration and Voting at One-Stop Sites) and I ask that you support the it as well. This legislation is important to maximizing voter-turnout during elections and ensuring that all North Carolinians are capable of exercising the most important of American rights: Voting for elected representation.

Senate Bill 195 will allow North Carolinians to register and vote in the same day during the pre-election day One-Stop voting period. This will make voting more convenient and available to North Carolinians that are increasingly busy with multiple jobs and families.

In order to provide protections against voter fraud, the legislation provides appropriate safe-guards to prevent voter fraud. Proof of eligibility is required along with a signed attestation of eligibility. The required proof of residence and eligibility is similar to the documentation that must be provided during standard registration. Providing false testimony for the purpose of casting an ineligible ballot is a Class I felony. There is a two-business day period in which the voter's eligibility would be validated. Should the ballot be ineligible, it would be retrieved and discarded.

This legislation is good for North Carolina and good for North Carolinians. I strongly urge you to support the bill and to urge your colleagues to support this bill as well.

Sent by email to Senator Harry Brown (R-6th NC Senate).

She is good

She might be coy about it, but with NC State being part of her district I doubt Senator Cowell is not behind this.
