UPDATE: The Rep. Brad Miller Question Thread

Folks, tomorrow is the day, live-blogging with Rep. Brad Miller. Will he run? What are his plans for the upcoming session? Come on, let's hear some Hardball questions...okay, nothing about "Busting Balls" like Chris Matthews.

Okay folks, here it is. Use this thread to pose your questions to Rep. Miller. In my mind there are three types of questions.

  1. Snark. You can post those over here.
  2. Policy. Such as Greg's great question about the biobased economy and topics like Iraq, foreign competition, first 100 hours, science, investigations, alternative energy, and health care - just off the top of my head.
  3. Politics. Will he run against Elizabeth Dole? What was it like facing the sleaziest candidate in the country? How can we win more House seats in the next election?

So, have at it my friends, post your questions and then...

My question is

WHY DID YOU OUT ME? I was just trying to protect you. Hope you don't suffer because of it. You never know what I will do or say.

Tough Question on Health Care.

Let's get right down to it. Will you sign on as a co-sponsor of House Resolution 676 by Rep. John Conyers, United States National Health Insurance Act?

If not, why?
If so, when and will you ask other North Carolia representatives to join on as well?

FL-13

What is your position on the disputed election in FL-13? What action by the new Congress, if any, will you support regarding who will occupy this seat?

Dear Rep. Miller,

I noticed that you are a member of the Autism Caucus, and as such I was wondering whether you would be willing to cosponsor bills like HR1107, To amend the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to provide full funding for assistance for education of all children with disabilities?

The caucus has 180 House members, yet this bill, which is so important to all children with disabilities only has 42 co-sponsors. I would like to note that Reps. Butterfield, Etheridge, and McIntyre have signed on as co-sponsors, while good Democrats like Reps. Watt, Price, and yourself have not, yet.

Thank you.

I'd like to second that request

Please consider co-sponsoring this bill. It's incredibly important to families all over NC, and all over the country.

I will 3rd that!

My grandson is 12 years old and Autistic. My daughter has battled schools and daycares all his life because they want to pigeon-hole him in classes for the learning disabled or discipline problem kids. He has been home-schooled most of his life and only attended 3 years at a regular school because they lucked out on finding one with a real program for autistic kids. However, now he is back to being home-schooled again. And thank goodness for their situation, in the past, my daugter couldn't work because she home-schooled, now, the other grandmother lives there and does the job.

The school district was going to put him in a middle school for discipline problem kid this year and that is why they are home schooling. His biggest problems now are social skills and with home schooling, he doesn't get to practice good social skills. He craves contact with other kids his age and when he does get around them, he is so excited he forgets all he has learned.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Don't you wonder

why so many kids have this problem now. I know so many people who have children and grandchildren with it. Is it all one thing or are they lumping different things together?

It took a long time to finally get a diagnosis

Finally, they got him enrolled in a program, TEACH, thanks to John Edwards and a real evaluation was done. Before that they tried to tell us he had ADD or was mentally retarded, all the teachers and admin's opinions, and they wanted to put him on medication. Both parents said no and home schooled.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is not just one thing, it encompasses many things. Here's how the Autism Society of North Carolina defines it:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of developmental disabilities—including classic autism, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PPD-NOS), and Asperger’s Syndrome—that affect a person’s ability to understand what they see, hear, and otherwise sense. It is a brain disorder that impacts communication, social interaction, and behavior. Individuals with ASD typically have difficulty understanding verbal and nonverbal communication and learning appropriate ways of relating to other people, objects, and events. No two people with ASD are the same. As its name implies, ASD is a spectrum disorder that affects individuals differently and with varying degrees of severity. Additionally, ASD is often found in combination with other disabilities

There are more and more children being diagnosed within this spectrum disorder, and according to the director of our CDSA (Child Development Services Agency, the regional agency that often makes initial diagnoses and provides services to children ages 0-2, at least this fiscal year)we don't know what the reason for that is. It could be that we recognize it more than we did before, and it could be that it is happening more.

The important thing is that when families receive a diagnosis like this, they have support and services. Mental health services have been cut so drastically that it's difficult for agencies, both private and governmental, to serve the need. The need increases, the funding decreases. Quite a conundrum. Fortunately, every county in NC is served by the Family Support Network of North Carolina, which offer support to families of children with special needs - not just autism, but any special need. Please let any one who might benefit from their help know about their website. Thanks.

I'd love to vote for you, but

Johnston County is not in your district! So how about running for the Senate next time? Seriously, whether Dole runs for re-election or not, I would love to see a strong, progressive Democrat such as yourself take that office to represent the whole state in the Senate. Thanks for taking our questions.

Census

Rep Miller,
Your seat was awarded to NC after the 2000 Census, seat number 435 as divvied up after the big headcount. Some in Utah have disputed that action, claiming that they should have received the 435th seat.

Now there is a bill to increase the size of the House of Representative to 437, awarding one seat to DC and one to Utah. After the 2010 Census, DC would keep it's seat and Utah's would go into the big pot with the other 435 to be divvied up again. What is your position on this bill? What is your position on statehood for DC?

Project Vote Smart

I'm a great fan of yours and you have my enthusiastic support. My question has to do with Project Vote Smart. As you probably know this is an on-line, non-profit, non-partisan research organization that collects and distributes information on candidates for public office. Part of what it does is provide information regarding a politician's stand on major issues by having them complete the National Political Awareness Test and then it posts the results of that survey on their website.

At one time 72% of all candidates for political office filled out the test, but now only 48% are willing to do so, primarily it is said because they fear that specifying their positions will give their political opponents a weapon that can be used against them.

Still, it seems like a noble gesture to be forthcoming, unequivocal and transparent with those constituents whom you wish to represent.

Unfortuntely, you have chosen not to complete the NPAT test. You are certainly not alone in refusing to do so, but David Price, Sue Myrick and Richard Burr have.

Why won't you?

Ethics Reform

Much has been made of the Republican culture of corruption. The Democrats are now in a great position to do meaningful ethics reform in Congress. There are two key initiatives that are necessary for genuine reform. I would like to know how you stand on each of these proposals...

1. The establishment of an Independent Office of Public Integrity that would sit outside the House Ethics Committee. The powers of the Independent Office of Public Integrity would at best be advisory to the House Ethics Committee, but its words would carry great weight and ensure that, at a minimum, the American public would have a trustworthy yardstick by which to judge the actions of its representatives.

2. Action on the use of earmarks which divert funding to a Congressman's pet projects, or the pet projects of those who contribute to the Congressman's campaigns. Are you for the outright elimination of earmarks? If you aren't, would you support legislation that would not only disclose the sponsor and recipient of an earmark, but also limit the number and amount that can be spent on earmarks?

The 2.3 trillion dollars

of Pentagon money that is unaccounted for or "dissappeared" ... what happened to the investigation? ($1billion plundered from Iraq'a defense ministry alone, according to Patrick Cockburn.) Does anybody know where the money went? Did the Bush Administration succeed in getting rid of the investigator who was on that case? Can you tell us anything about this?

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Representative Miller, First

Representative Miller,

First let me say I'm very sorry I did not give more time to you and your campaign. My girlfriend and I live in Five Points, that lovely little Blue bastion, and decided however to help out more with Larry Kissel's campaign. However I am so glad I don't have to regret my decision other than we could not help Mr. Kissel win in the end.

Now I have 2 questions for you!

1- What are you going to do about Net Neutrality? Now that Democrats control both the House and the Senate (for today) are we going to see laws enacted to help permenently protect the freedom of having equal and fair access to the Internet? I would encourage you, as one of the orginal blogger/internet politicans to embrace the goodness of the Web, to take a lead in this issue as we control Congress and as the Telecom Co.'s strike back against it.

2- What are we, as intelligent open minded people, going to do about this rash of Anti-Muslim attacks against US elected officals? Recently we've seen Mr. Ellison elected to Congress as our 1st Muslim American Representative. And we well probably see Barack Obama run for President, who has Hussien as a middle name. We've seen attacks from US Congressmen/women, Media talking heads such as Glen Bleck, and other citizens on these people solely b/c they have Muslim ties.

What, as the real Big Tent Party, can we do about this? This is not so much a policy question, but one of our nation's soul.

I feel that we are living in a new age of bigotry and hate after 9/11 that will change the course of our country forever, if we do not act. How would you have us move diplomatically in our international relations with Muslim nation-states to improve sentiments abroad and at home?

Thanks again for being my Representative, because I never have to worry how your going to vote and who you are going to protect.

Whom Will You Endorse for President?

I know that being from North Carolina must be a significant tie to John Edwards, however, I note that both you and Barack Obama have a degree from Columbia. So whom will you be endorsing for President?

Good question.

In the last election, I believe all the NC House members endorsed Edwards.

Impeachment

It is stunningly clear that George Bush and many in his administration LIED to the American people about the need to invade Iraq. It's also clear this administration and many of it's corporate supporters are engaged in either war profiteering or gouging the American taxpayer.

I'd like to know your thoughts on impeaching George Bush and Dick Cheney, and sending them to prison for a long stretch.

No Child Left Behind

The "No Child Left Behind" law has been universally criticized for being bureaucratic, punitive, inflexible and underfunded. During the next session of Congress the law will come up for reauthorization for the first time since it was initially passed. What are your thoughts about "No Child Left Behind" and what changes would you like to see in the law before it's reauthorized?

A Reconsidertion of Defunding The Iraqi Conflict

Speaker Pelosi has said that the new Democratic Congress would not seek to defund the war in Iraq as a means for bringing the conflict to an end. However, she made that commitment before President Bush began to consider an escalation in our troop commitment as a policy option.

If President Bush is willing to radically change the direction of the conflict by adding another 20,000, 30,000 or 50,000 troops, wouldn't it be appropriate for House Democrats to reconsider defunding the conflict as a means to force the President's hand and initiate a withdrawal?

Dear Rep. Miller -

Thank you for considering our questions.

First - what is your opinion on immigration, both legal and illegal? Are you in favor of the 'wall' or do you feel there is another, better solution? President Calderon has said:'...he will focus on creating jobs to keep Mexicans at home.' Other than exporting our manufacturing jobs, in what way can we help him accomplish this?

Second - The NC Utilites Commiss ion has recently allowed PSNC to implement a two tier system that penalizes conservation and encourages unnecessary use in the summer to gain a better rate in the winter. Why was this allowed? It violates 8 of the 11 articles in the Commission's mission statement. In what way is this decision supposed to help the people of NC?

Third - What is the platform of the Democratic party for the 21st century? If someone on the street asked you, 'what does it mean to be a Democrat and why should I be one' what would you say to them?

Thanks for listening.

Mortgage lending

Two recent State Supreme court verdicts have made NC consumers vulnerable to out of state lenders who buy NC originated mortgages but cannot now be sued in NC courts unless they have substantial business in NC. This may be remedied but as issue that touches on predatory lending and interstate commerce, what can Congress do to protect consumers when loans are sold across state lines?

Balanced Budget?

Rep Miller,
The National Debt is $8,617,052,257,201.05 as of this moment, almost $3 Trillion more than it was on Jan 20, 2001. The annual budget deficit has gone completely out of control since the GOP squandered the surplus handed them by the Clinton Administration. How do we right the budgetary ship? What changes to tax policy do you advocate?

Our lost civil liberties

Representative Miller:

What will you do to restore our lost civil liberties? Are you willing to sponsor legislation repealing the Patriot Act, its successors and the Military Commissions Act?
It is all well and good that we Democrats have taken back Congress, but if all he civil liberties wrongs of the past six years are left standing, we are not better off. We need to lift the secrecy and classification of information that has shrouded our government, for which we pay dearly, surely a no-brainer--will you help.
What might you do to reduce the idiocy of no fly lists which are kept as state secrets? What might you and your colleagues do to repeal the Bankruptcy Act immediately, restoring the previous bankruptcy models.
Can you help with actions to turn "presidential signings" into felonies? Will you support and help fund special prosecutors to investigate the administration and all agencies, including the AG and Justice, for the crimes they have committed in office - felonies - frauds against the voters and taxpayers? Forget Bush, take out his henchmen, en masse.

Many things have been taken from us. Many in these comments have a variety of supplications, for which I have sympathy. But at the end of the day, if we simply leave in place all the wrongs inflicted by the Republicans, often helped by Democrats, usually based on fear - why bother with all the other stuff?

Katrina Victims

As time has passed since hurricane Katrina the narrative about the aftermath of that disaster has changed from one about race and poverty to one about corruption and incompetence. This has pushed awareness of the victims and their very real needs into the background even as it's made the government appear impotent. What can be done to change this?
