Undue Burden Indeed

Over here at MSNBC the AP reports that small towns are having to shoulder the burden of KIA's in Iraq. I think that this is relevant to NC as we have so many small towns where young people fresh out of high school have few choices/options (the Observer had a report on a young man from Pineville who died in Iraq, sorry no link). If you're poor or middle class, college may be out of reach for you unless you don't mind graduating under a mountain of debt or decide to join one of the four branches (or the CG) to get money for college.

Problem is, this is exactly where the neo-cons want poor people. A no-win situation between $5.75 or signing up for active duty. And if your loved one happens to die in Iraq, how much will Uncle Sam put up to see that they receive a proper burial? Here's one example of how that scenario is playing out:

Hawthorne said the military gave her $4,000 for his funeral, but it wasn't enough to cover the $14,000 expense. The funeral home forgave the rest, and neighbors collected $400 to help her get by.

Another shitty story in the morning, at least the community stepped up in this one instance.Sorry everyone, but I think this is important for our "elected" reps need to know about (not that Limber Liddy, Dick Burr or He Who Cannot Vote Correctly will do anything about it), they're busy supporting the troops by supporting Dear Leader.

This is really sad

I haven't heard any stories specific to North Carolina, but if it's happening in a small town we don't always hear it from the Charlotte Observer.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Army Sgt. John D. Rode

The most recent North Carolinian death reported was Sgt. John Rode of Pineville who was among those who died on Valentine's Day when an IED was detonated near his vehicle (http://www.defenselink.mil/Releases/Release.aspx?ReleaseID=10526). Meanwhile, back at the hideout we were supposed to be wiping out when we got sidetracked, al Qaeda is reorganizing and training in the remote mountains of Pakistan (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-oe-hoffman20feb20,1,4000308.story?coll=la-news-c...).

I am too cynical

I want people like the one you referenced in the quote to put their faces on tv every day for the next 2 years with one simple message, "My family member died and I couldnt afford the funeral thanks to Elizabeth Dole and George Bush."
