UPDATED WITH PETITIONS
Dear Chancellor Thorp,
The screen grab image at the right is from the WRDU 106.1 website. They are using the good name of the University of North Carolina to promote the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.
I'm sorry to ruin your day, but this situation is intolerable. It is not a matter of free speech, it is a matter of integrity, honor and decency. Which is why I'm writing this public letter to ask why the University of North Carolina is associated in any way with a radio station that carries such despicable programming.
Unless UNC lawyers have really screwed up, there's bound to be a clause in a contract somewhere that allows the University to sever its relationship with scumbag organizations like WRDU 106.1. They should not be part of the Tarheel Sports Network. They should not be allowed to put our logo on their website.
And so, the ball is in your court. Please end UNC's relationship with WRDU. Not next year, not next month, not next week. Please end it now.
Your friend,
James Protzman

Chancellor Thorp
I have met the good chancellor several times and he is an excellent man. I truly am sorry to be lobbing this hand-grenade into his Saturday court. But lob I must, because the good name of my alma mater is being dragged through the sewer by UNC's affiliation with WRDU.
You can contact Mr. Thorp here.
UNC must disassociate Carolina Basketball from Rush Limbaugh
To All it May Concern:
I join those who ask UNC to disassociate its basketball game broadcasts from Rush Limbaugh's RUSH RADIO 106.1 FM. UNC deserves better than to have its brand associated with a self-absorbed hatred-inspiring provocateur whose business model requires him to spew misogynistic, homophobic racist rants on a daily basis.
The longer you wait, the more damage there will be to undo. I suggest you get out during this year's tournaments, or at least publicly announce that the contract will not be renewed next year.
Thank you,

Rush's right wing backers think the guy is invincible, and having an association with UNC gives his stations a legitimacy they don't deserve. Write the chancellor now.

If you're on Twitter I started an act.ly petition:
petition @UNC_Basketball to Drop Rush Radio 106.1 after Limbaugh slur on GU law student http://act.ly/5mx RT to sign #bluenc #uncbball
Thank you, Greg
Let's hope UNC gets the message.
WPTI as well
It uses the same "Rush Radio" branding as WRDU. Change.org petition might be on the way.
Here are the other Tar Heel Sports Network stations
that also carry Rush (cross-referenced between Rush's NC affiliate list and the Tar Heel Sports Network affiliate list:
WSPC Albemarle
WGBR Goldsboro
WHKP Hendersonville
WCAB Rutherfordton
WSIC Statesville

Hope he takes this as seriously as we do.

This will be nothing but a problem for Thorp. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, some people will be upset either way.
Which means personal integrity and honor must rule the decision.

Thanks for setting this up. Maybe you can use your magical Kos powers to get this on the national agenda? UNC's affiliation with these stations is an abomination that deserves wide awareness.
Go CDNC!
DO NOT be distracted by Rush's apology
Limbaugh today "apologized" saying he chose the wrong words. I guess that means he should apologize for the hateful things he says each and every day. UNC should not be associated with a business that monetizes hate. Period.
Several people have already written that the apology ends this issue. The apology ends nothing. It was a futile attempt to stem the tide of advertisers leaving his affiliates.
If UNC students and faculty allow this relationship to stand with WRDU, they will be telling the world that integrity, honor and decency mean nothing when broadcast revenues are at stake.
Come on, faculty. Get your act together.
Hipocrits All
Was Rush Limbaugh wrong for saying what said? Yes.
He, like many people got carried away because of his feelings. Once he started down the path it was impossible to switch tracks without looking stupid. Of course that is what he was already doing, looking stupid.
Should you accept his apology? Yes. You do not know if he meant it or not, but an apology was offered and should be accepted.
Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a twat and a cunt. Did he ever apologize for this? NO! Did you boycott his show?
I didn't think so.
Sort of like Zimmerman
got "carried away" with his feelings?
For what it's worth, there are so many flaws in your analogy that it doesn't warrant the effort to respond in detail. But I will point out that if you're going to use the word "hypocrites" you should at least spell it correctly.
Have a nice day.
