Treasurer's race

Hello all - I have not seen a lot on here about the treasurers race.

Any comments on the candidates?

Janet Cowell

I'm sure the other candidates in the race are great, but I'm unwaivering in my support of Janet Cowell. She's a top-rate public servant and a true progressive.

That's a ringing endorsement!

Can you tell us more about her? :)

Crap. I had a really long

Crap.

I had a really long thing written and just lost it.

Short version:

1. As a student at NC State, Cowell was always one of the more student friendly members of the City Council. One moment that stands out in my mind was during a debate on a housing ordinance.

2. She was one of five Democratic hold outs against the lottery, despite intense pressure from the Party establishment to fold.

3. She spoke out against Fred Smith's ban on gay marriage unequivocally: "I'm against what I see as writing discrimination into the constitution."

I'm sorry.....we don't seem to be able to fix that problem

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Janet Cowell

Janet is a former Raleigh City Council Member and currently a State Senator from Wake County. She has paid particular attention to issues of urban growth and environmental quality. During her relatively brief legislative career, she was named Environmental Legislator of the Year by the Conservation Council of North Carolina. Janet has received the Conservation PAC's endorsement for State Treasurer. (She was just the second announced endorsement of the year for Conservation PAC, right after me.) I recommend a vote for Janet.

Cowell and Weisel

I've known Janet a long time and think the world of her. She's smart and is clearly committed to the progressive agenda.

I have a soft spot for Michael Weisel, too. I got to know Michael when he defended Richard Morgan in his electioneering conflict with Art Pope. Any Democrat willing to challenge the Puppetmaster - even working for a Republican operative like Morgan - is a friend and ally of mine. Michael took a lot of undeserved crap from Democrats for stepping into that mess ... and he handled himself well through it all.

Up until Moore threw his hat in the gubernatorial ring, I never thought of the Treasurer's Office as a stepping stone to anything else - and I liked it that way. Of all the offices where conflicts of interest might arise, they are particularly threatening in this one. I suppose that means I'd rather have a Treasurer who aspires to no higher office.

All that said, it looks to me like Janet is running a smart and strong campaign. If I were a betting man, I'd bet she's going to be our next Treasurer.

PS Disclosure: I contributed to and supported Janet in her runs for other offices, and I sent a contribution to Michael when he first announced for Treasurer. This was one of many instances where I found myself wishing there were no such things as primaries.

Janet Cowell

represents all the best one could want in a public servant. She's smart, ethical, energetic and articulate. Her presence in the General Assembly gave heart to those of us who want to believe Joe Hackney isn't the only person of integrity on Jones Street, and her election as Treasurer could restore confidence to those who are beginning to wonder what has happened to the Democratic Party in North Carolina.

Weisel has no vision -- just the backing of old school stalwarts who might as well be Republicans for all the "progress" they'd like to see made in party policies. Her other primary opponent, David Young, has zero qualifications but, unfortunately, a lot of fat-cat connections and monetary support. That isn't what we need.

We need Janet Cowell.
