What an amazing week. Here are a couple links to get you started:

What do you know, and when did you know it?!?
...alternately...
What have you done this week to turn NC Blue?
Comments
I haven't done anything to turn NC Blue
oh wait! I abandoned that Southern Dem title that just came across as way too conservative and started NC Politico.

NC politico?
When did that happen?

I've been trying to make it happen for a while now
I've been playing around with drupal for months trying to learn about it. It allows for mulitple sites on one installation and I had wanted to start a women's political blog and have it linked to Southern Dem. Well....after all sorts of mulling and figuring and chatting with friends, I decided to go with a fresh face on my old blog - The Southern Dem. At first I hadn't planned to change the name, but...oh well.....that's what happened.

It looks beautiful, Betsy!
I like it!
For what it's worth, I never thought "The Southern Dem" sounded too conservative - I think that Shuler et. al sound too conervative!. But the new site is lovely. Great job.
Thanks, Linda!
I guess I just wanted a bigger tent. I'll still be Southern Dem at Kos and MyDD.

That video of McHenry and Tim Ryan is great
I love Ryan's last line:
"Now we understand clearly, Mr. Speaker, that our friends on the other side of the aisle have had a difficult time governing the country, that doesn't mean they have to impede us from doing it."
I only got through about two minutes
and then I had to turn him off.

The McHenry vid?
LOL. Me, too. Too much starch not enough fabric.
hee.
Perfect description.
Yup, the McHenry vid
I can only watch him flail about and listen to him whine for so long.

It's so wonderful seeing people outside the district taking on our dear obsequious nit. (You and Ryan . . . )
News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,
I'm in the 12th
but I've had my sites trained on Pattycakes since day one. I've written to Richard Carsner who ran against him last time but have not gotten a reply. I think we need to send a delegation to district 10 and start looking for a candidate.
there are
some people (like DQ) working hard on getting someone.
He should have a top challenger, but we will see.

But we can always use the help
We have several in mind but no one for sure. Your ideas would be welcome, I'm sure, loftT. Tony McEwen is our new district chair. He works on veterans affairs for your Congressman, Mel Watt. If you have ideas for candidate recruitment, aybe you can contact him through Watt's Charlotte office.
News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,
I prefer not to have this discussion
in public! We have a lot of prospects but I think we really need to pick one early and fundraise like hell for that person, strategize the best way to use all of Pat's misdoings against him, and be very very very smart about it all. Some counties are getting really energized, some still lag and that's another private discussion.
As to going to Democratic meetings, I would recommend the monthly district meeting where you can meet all the major leaders and have substantive discussions afterwards.

check your pm's.
"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
Agree,
may I suggest that we just plan on posting a notice here when it's time for the next district meeting. Could we meet maybe beforehand and have those discussions in private?
You have monthly district meetings?
Do all districts do that?
The 5th, 10th and 11th have regular monthly meetings
They have email lists that they notify if the time and place change but they are usually at the same time and spot.
The 11th meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30. Usually at the Lake Junaluska Assembly (in Sunset Cafe across from the Inn) But sometimes they have it at the Maggie Valley Country Club. Contact District Secretary Bob McCollum to get directions and/or to be on the notification list: bobboh1((at)) yahoo ((dot)) com
The 10th generally meets the second Thursday in Morganton. Contact District Secretary Beth Jones for time and exact location (usually the Holiday Inn): ladyvet27 ((at)) wildblue ((dot)) net
The 5th meets in North Wilkesboro on the 4th Saturday morning. District Secretary Miranda Burgin: mirandaburgin ((at)) yahoo ((dot)) com
I don't think all the districts meet regularly but it's a great idea. It's particularly helpful for any candidate whose district spans more than a county or two.
News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,
I'd love to see this happen in the 6th.
Thanks for the information, DQ!
Any idea...
how much it would cost to make a run in the 10th? I'm just curious. I have no idea how much it costs to run in the western part of the state.
well
a lot.
The 2004 Republican primary was one of the most expensive in the country. However, that was in large part because we had no Democratic nominee, and because it involved about 6 people I think.
McHenry spent 1.5 million in 2006 against a not very credible challenger.
The good news is that there is little broadcast television inside the district, so that makes it a little cheaper. The bad news is that you then have to find other ways to talk to people, and you have to spend a lot more money on innovative field techniques.
Like in 2004 McHenry had volunteers walking around with mini DVD players with specific messages for canvassing.

Interesting Concept
too bad more people don't share it .
btw- patrick needs another job.
Sometimes I think I just go to meetings ...
and write stuff (or link stuff from here much of the time) for folks on our local list serve. That feels is so totally insignificant on days when there are men out there like Les Merritt trying to derail NC's election process and Fred Smith trying to turn NC's Constitution into a theocratic text.
Then I run across stuff like this,
and the insignificant feeling rolls right off my back.
"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
Yes, I do create many blogs
Both for my personal interests and when people ask me to make them for them.
This is what I wrote on scrutinyhooligans.com
You should go see Knocked Up
There's a great (but very small) fantasy baseball scene in it.
I replied at Scru hoo
But I'll also post here that I noticed your Shuler for Senate post a few days ago on this site and I clicked onto your diary here. Everything I wrote about (except the Snow site) came from your BlueNC blog and your own links.
Last night, when Blue South asked about the new Snow blog I just guessed that it was connected to you. You have to understand any blogging out west is so rare that we can't help but remark on someone new, particularly someone with your graphic skills.
I wish you DID have more of a connection with Shuler. They're a closed bunch and sometimes it's hard to figure them out. Even before us Hooligans (as well as some BlueNCers) started disagreeing with Shuler votes, when we were promoting him 100%, his peeps were so leery of us and blog-ignorant, they failed to take advantage of what we were doing for them time and time again. Now that we don't agree with them a hundred percent, some of them have gotten downright nasty to me and pretty cold to other, less wombed bloggers.
But, for sure, I look forward to hearing more about biofuels. We all might come down hard on Snow and Shuler for their lack of concern for homosexual rights (and on Shuler over the Iraq war nonpullout), but they do vote our way much of the time and maybe it's good that you're around to remind us of that!
News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,
I don't think anyone looks at the Mountains much
and that is a shame. it's an area where the failures of republican politics have greatly afected everyone. CAFTA has singalled the end of manufacturing out there, and the republicans supported it and sadly, from outside the district, I'm probably one of the few who actually cares.
As for Sen. Snow and the defense of marriage amendment, I think he had one of two choices, either ignore it, or support it. Marriage can be a very dangerous thing in the far west and I wasn't in the room when that was decided, so I can't speak on the matter. I hope y'all will support Judge Snow in '08, despite him being in difference on that issue. I also don't think Sen. Snow's people were ready for the blog to go "public" quite yet. I didn't think anyone linked to it, so i'm surprised it even made it onto the radar of anyone.
I'm also planning on making my way to the brew grass festival this fall, so it would be great to meet many of y'all westerners when i'm there for a brew or two. You'll find me to be very progressive, but much more of a pragmatist. It's fair to say that I might be losing my ideology all together when it comes to ensuring victory.

Come in to Drinking Liberally in Asheville
any Thursday night 7-10 at the Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue (about a block down from the bus station.) Many Asheville bloggers meet there. I don't get in as much as I'd like. It's over an hour drive for me. But it's always worth it.
We all get quite progressive in off years and then turn very pragmatic come spring of an election year.
Most of us at DL worked hard for Patsy Keever and then even harder for Heath Shuler so we feel we have the right to bitch and moan . . .

anyone know what this is about? Dole breaks with party on oil
Can someone tell me why this happened? Any ideas?
Dole was one of only five Republicans to vote against relaxing the offshore drilling ban to allow natural gas exploration off the shore of Virginia.Burr, DeMint and Graham all voted for the measure proposed by Sen. John Warner, R-Va. It was defeated Thursday by a 44-43 vote.

Maybe ...
There is no rhyme, reason, or logic when it comes to Liddy's votes - sometimes it just is what it is.
sure
Its offshore drilling. She has said in the past she opposes offshore drilling. She voted FOR offshore drilling after saying she was against it a few years ago. She voted against this bill because it was going to fail no matter what.
Its yet another flip-flop from Elizabeth Dole.
