Stop I-3 Coalition

The campaign to stop I-3 through Western North Carolina is underway. And guess who is on the House Committee on Transportation - our very own Robin Hayes, NC-08. This is just another reason we need to re-take the Congress this year.

In 2005, Congressman Charlie Norwood re-introduced plans for an interstate (originally proposed by Max Burns) that would go through Savannah, GA to Knoxville, TN, by way of Augusta. This proposed bill is known as Interstate Three, and is said to link a nuclear weapons complex in Oak Ridge, TN, to the site of the Savannah River nuclear facility.

Congressman Norwood's (warped) reasoning:
-There is a need for interstate linkage between military hospitals and facilities in the interest of the strategic defense of the Nation.
-E Georgia, W North Carolina and E Tennessee are underserved by N-S Interstate would bring economic benefits and increase public safety.
-Interstate would be named in honor of the US Army 3rd Infantry Division, "tip of the spear" during the Iraq war.

I-3 will also have a major effect on the environment. The original study on I-3, said that the interstate would run through three National Forests, in three different states. Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee are the homes of the Chattahoochee, Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Appalachian Trail, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are also potentially in I-3’s path. Interstate Three will also hurt local and regional water, air, archeological and natural resources.

The interstate will leave in its wake a destruction of natural beauty, and the industries that depend on tourism will suffer greatly. I-3 will bring environmental and economic disaster in the mountains of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

What can you do?
-Write to Robin Hayes, Elizabeth Dole, and Richard Burr to express your opposition to building I-3.
-Write to the NC Board of Transportation to express your opposition to spending scarce transportation dollars on this boondoggle project.
-Join the Stop I-3 Coalition.

What the ????

I am ashamed to admit that this is the first I've heard about this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

No it isn't!

I just don't remember it being called I-3......

Sorry, One track mind during election season.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Thanks Screwy

I'm not surprised you guys are on top of this boondoggle.

What is it with the GOP and building new unnecessary super-highways? Don't they know the ones we've got are falling apart?

It would wipe us out.......

In Graham County! Take a look on the proposal maps at the I-3 site. They show it comming across the Dragon out of Tenn. The Bikers and sports car clubs that use the dragon, that race on it and have poker runs on it fill our motels up each weekend not to mention Fontana Village & Tapoco Lodge Resorts and it would cut smack thru the middle of town! I was really gratefull when I went thru the archives and found where Senator John Snow-D & Rep. Roger West-R who represent Graham county are against it.

We have the Corredor K Project in final stages with approxmatly 2 sections left to build and we now have the Federal Cherohala Skyway which crosses the mountains between N.C. & Tenn at the 4 & 5000 ft levels. You can be in Knoxville ,Tn in no time by going this route so why in hades would we want a Interstate cutting our county into? This sounds like the old Cade Cove dael over in the Smoky Mtn. Park where they came in and ran everyone out. All that is required for immenent domain is to own 73% of a county by the Federal Goverment. 78% of Graham is owned by the Feds in one form or another! TVA's Fontana lake covers 3 towns not to mention several copper & silver mines! And those people were hearded out of there like cattle and the North Shore Road contreversy is about going to those families gravesites!

Nope ,I dont think we would benifit one bit from it! Most of our youth already leave here to find jobs anyhow so the actual road building would not provide anything to them that would last over say 5 years anyhow.
So I guess my offical stand is, No, We dont need I-3!

all politics is local.

get on it.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.
