This Space Intentionally Left Blank

To whoever deleted the previous strip, this one might be better for you. It is totally devoid of content for your reading pleasure.

It makes no political statements and should not cause a ruckus.

Seriously, I was invited to post the strips here at BlueNC. If you are going to delete one, at least email and tell me. I am beginning to feel like I just quit the Edwards campaign, ya know? Yes, you can do whatever you want to the site, but at least tell me if I am banned.

And for Screwie, I didn't get to read your content, but someone told me I insulted you. Please email me so I can straighten the issue out.

Not me.

I think you're a tool when it comes to this issue, but I would never delete it.

Where are the candidates?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I was wondering if I was banned altogether.

But it seems that my posting privs are still intact.

I know I am controversial and if they wanted to pull it from that front page, that is fine. I am not here to absorb all their traffic. But deleting the strip altogether is worrisome.

But, thanks for the support, it is deeply appreciated.

Town Called Dobson - Daily Political Cartoon: Not all is red in rural America!

I didn't delete it

and it should not have been deleted. I moved it off the front page and explained why in my comments.

Whoever is deleting stuff: STOP.

Just out of curiosity, what does the "Dump" vote do? Would enough dump votes...well, dump it? I assumed they were "move it off the frontpage" votes.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I don't know

but will find out.

So you were deleted. . .

I was in the middle of posting something when it was deleted.

Are you persona non grata for questioning John Edwards?

I didn't know this was a satellite campus of the JEFP blog. I love debating with Edwards supporters (he's still in my top two, even though my support has regressed a bit). But to shut down a debate?

I know Edwards isn't that sensitive.

War is over if you want it.

Got it

I was looking at the wrong post. Enough "dump" votes gets something "unpublished." That's not the same as "deleted" (it's still in the database, and admins can still get to it), but unless an admin re-publishes, the effect is the same. The "dump" threshold was set when the site saw fewer visitors. For now, I have turned off the "dump" vote. When I have some time (not soon) to fine-tune the system, I'll do that and restore "dump".

(Actually, I may replace the voting system with something less kludgy, which I've been meaning to do for a while.)

I don't have a "dump" option.

Just recommend or not... so is the dump option supposed to be available to all or to just the moderators?

Stan Bozarth

It's not there any more

because Lance removed it, but until today, if you clicked on the down arrow, where it says moderate post, the "dump" option would drop down. Like a lot of other people, I always thought that was a vote against front-paging the post. Although I never used it myself, I would not have thought it was an attempt to ban a post.

I'm not sure anyone ever used it.

I'm fine with it never being returned. I don't think any post except spam, porn etc. should disappear unless the author takes it down.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Certainly shouldn't have

Certainly shouldn't have been deleted. I didn't even hit "dump." BUt I have in the past, and I thought that just meant a vote to keep it off the front page. Please clarify.

"85% of Republicans are Democrats who don't know what's going on." -Robert Kennedy, Jr.

"Man is free at the moment he wishes to be." -Voltaire

I'm still seeing the Edwards rukus post

So I don't know what's going on from a database perspective, and I probably won't have time for sleuthing today. And the post only had one dump vote, not enough for demotion.

Stormbear, FWIW, I think you had to put up with a bunch of ridiculous crap on that thread. Keep posting; maybe one day you can offer limited edition reprints of "the White Strip".

Didn't touch it

I didn't vote for or against it. I didn't edit or view in edit or accidentally click. I didn't delete it and was surprised to see it go. As I've said elsewhere I carry a copy of the Constitution with Amendments and the Declaration of Independence around with me all the time. I am a firm believer in free speech, however injudicious. I don't believe in misrepresentation or maliciously injurious speech.

Okay, my test diary is gone as well. Lance, fix this.

dump, which I have never used before today, means delete. THAT is for trolls, not for people you disagree with, so we need to fix it.

SB, it appears there was no malicious intent, other than to vote you off the front page, not off the island!

Where are the candidates?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I clicked to dump - but I thought that just kept it off the front page. I wouldn't even try to get anything booted from the site...

Did I do it? If so, you have my apologies - I'm evidently ignorant in the ways of the "dump".

Scrutiny Hooligans -

And SB

Here was the gist of my comment:

You're entitled to your opinions. However, accusing two well-respected bloggers of lying requires proof. You offer none. You accuse them of lying and then go from there.

This leaves you guttersniping just like Donohue, and it's not o.k. with me.

So - I'm asking that you apologize to the bloggers for questioning their integrity without even a shred of proof. If you acknowledge your error in judgment, then we're cool. If not, then you're off my blogroll at Scrutiny Hooligans. I can't abide having my friends called liars when there's nothing to suggest that.

That is all...

I hope the "Case of the Vanishing Post" is solved soon.

Scrutiny Hooligans -

This is inevitable

There are a wide variety of ways to be left of center. I hope BlueNC doesn't get into the business of telling us which one is right and which ones are wrong. (I have the same problem on OP, I'll admit.)

If the comic was removed for it's content, I'll be pretty disturbed. Is there a page that shows who is responsible for the moderation of the site?

See comments above

This was the result of a "dump" feature that has the effect of "un-publishing" a node when it gets enough negative votes. Nothing had been dumped before, so none of us thought about upping the threshold, which was set back when we were a much smaller site.

Everything has been restored except for certain commenters' sanity, over which I have no control.

You may want to pull this quote, which is written below a page-width banner exlaiming "THIS STRIP WAS BANNED AT BLUENC!", from the top of your blog:

"NOTE: I was invited to post Town Called Dobson on after I finished blogging for Roger Sharpe. Now, without warning or reason, today’s strip was banned from the site. I am beginning to feel like I just finished working for the Edwards campaign. Ya know?"

It's starting to look like a pattern of misstating facts...

Scrutiny Hooligans -

Casting BlueNC as the villain, or, at the very least, the mysterious group that may have banned you while calling it "dumping".

From Stormbear's blog:

"UPDATE: I am being told the strip was not banned but “dumped” and I am unsure of the difference. Click here for the full explanation."

Scrutiny Hooligans -

from the other thread...

The banned banner links to...
... the Left Blank page and always has. I updated it right after I sent you a private note. (Did you get it?)

I am still unclear on the difference between banning and dumping. It feels the same to me. No hard feelings. Bad day all around.

Town Called Dobson - Daily Political Cartoon: Not all is red in rural America!

Ok, back from meetings.

I read through this whole thread in one sitting this time and let me know if I have this right.

The strip was modded down so much that it no longer was on the front page, AND was hidden from view totally?

And no one single person blocked it off, it was just a high total of down mods?

Do I have it right?

Town Called Dobson - Daily Political Cartoon: Not all is red in rural America!

Yeah, basically.

And I don't want the phrase "modded down" (which sounds like it might refer to, or at least make people think of, a different feature on another website) to confuse anybody. The "dump" feature was instituted when there were only a handful of hard core regulars and we were looking for a way to nuke trolls by consensus. The problem in this case was threefold:

  1. The threshold to unpublish a post was set to six votes, which at today's BlueNC is really, really low;
  2. we have a lot more than a handful of regulars, far too many to support an assumption of consensus and coordinated action (which is kind of bad, but a lot more good); and
  3. the dump feature went pretty much unused and, in effect, under the radar (until the Edwards brigade got their dander up, that is), and never got adjusted to be a better fit for today's BlueNC.

So I pulled it. I'm planning some site upgrades in March, and a new voting system was on the B-list. It is now on the A-list.

I don't want anyone to get the impression that BlueNC has been wielding this secret and draconian censorship tool until we finally got busted for being fascists in disguise. (I don't think that anyone is saying that; I just want anyone to think we're a bunch of bastards.) The culpability for the "dumping" of stormbear's post is all mine: BlueNC's dump feature was never meant for posts like his, and it was not properly tuned for or explained to the community that BlueNC has become. It was a roller-skate on a stairway in the dark, I left it there and I apologize – my mistake added a fair amount of heat to an already overheated situation.

Don't beat yourself up

Those who voted to dump didn't know it would hide the post. That feature need never make a return to the site as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for setting up our group for this weekend today.

Cabin Fever in February

In February in Maine, people get unusually itchy and quirky. I think that happened in our recent quarrels. Even though we have no snow. It is cold. Less time outside.

Where in Maine?

My dad lives just outside of Bucksport in a little town called Orland. It's on the Penobscot River, very beautiful country. Have you ever been to Blue Hill and seen the reversing falls there? My grandmother has a cabin on Lake Sebec in Dover-Foxcroft. My great-grandfather was a cook on tall ships that would dock at Kennebunkport. Lot of history for me there, although I was born and grew up in Florida.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Screw you Mainey!!!

I think you're right, at least partially.
