Some Guestimates

I'd say that about 2-3% of the comments here at BlueNC are abusive or mean-spirited. And that those abusive or mean-spirited comments make up about 30-40% of our anonymous (non-registered user) comments. Based on these very unscientific guesses and the community sentiments expressed in this thread, anonymous commenting at BlueNC is no longer possible.

Does this mean that BlueNC is populated by narrow-minded tools who can't stand to hear what they don't agree with? It might, if registering for a site account weren't automated, free, and easy. The only people excluded by this change are those without the imagination required to think up a pseudonym.

I don't get enough comments

I don't get enough comments to warrant the attention of such people, but I did have John Scalzi yell at me yesterday. That's something.

Lance, Thanks

I did this at my place and the one guy who tended to go off on really long unintelligble rants actually registered after a while and was a bit more civil after he did.

Is good, yes?

Register, ya lurkers! Come on in. Sit a spell. Speak your piece. Wow the BlueNC community with your most excellent pseudonym and share your experiences.

One small step for Anonymice, one giant step for BlueNC. Thanks, Lance.

I like BlueNC because it feels like community

If I wanted to read thousands of posts and comments, I'd spend my time at DailyKos or MyDD or even good ole usenet. But long experience has shown me that some rightwingers have unfathomable energy for trolling and weird arguments and show no ability to actually discuss anything.

I come to BlueNC because it feels like community, in part because I've met some of the people on it (I've known Anglico since the 80s, I think) and in part because it's still pretty small. Daily posts are already growing too numerous for me to read thoroughly, and I rarely have the patience to read the comments that are currently posted.

I have no desire to read everyone's input. I want to hear my community's input. It's pretty easy to find rightwing crap. Especially since so many posts link to it!! ;-)

One bad thing about aliases

is that it took me a long time, and meeting you in person for the second or third time (at Kissell fundraiser) to connect you with zabouti.

p.s. Why Zabouti?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.
