Signing Statements Open Thread

What would you weasel out of if you had the signing statement authority claimed by the President? I think I might have sent in my student loan promissory notes with signing statements reserving my "right" to repay only those dollars that I feel ended up doing me some educational good. What about you?

On April 15th

I would like to send the IRS a signing statement instead of my hard earned money.

i'd probably weasel out of work

better yet, i'd use the power of the non-existant "citizen signing statement" to get into that tom waits concert in asheville tonight. just let me stand near a fire exit - i'll be the first one out in case of a fire.

Off subject, asking for help

I wrote a lte last week to our local newspaper, The Pilot in Southern Pines. People were writing the "my tv station is better/fair & blanced/Unbiased, than yours". I jumped in with this letter

Today's lte had one addressed to me,

So I ask, should I answer this? If so, have any suggestions? I am not familar with "The News Hour With Jim Lehrer" or the "McNeil-Lehrer Report". I just don't watch very much tv anymore and only watched PBS occasionally.

Please help. (yes, that's my real last name)

Usually newspapers will not print your response to a response to your original letter. If there is a factual error they might bite.

Greg, this one does

I have had many back & forths with people in The Pilot and they print them long as I stay under 300 words.

The News Hour

is a great show, unbiased as he says. Agree with that. However, you should look up the study that shows Comedy Central viewers that watch Jon Stewart score better on current events quizzes than any other "network". Bloggers are big viewers of that show.

Also, use MediaMatters as an example of a blogger-based group that debunks right and left leaning shows. There are more sites available online for the truth than there are channels on the dial.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

You can watch some of it online and decide for yourself.

Their response was a bit of a dodge, I think, since your letter's POV was more that blogs are a more in-depth source of news, i.e., no sound bites, and less beholden to corporate influence.  I don't recall your mentioning anything about "truth," just, uh, accountability (?).

I'm sure a lot of people watch Newshour for the same reason.

I don't mind sending the IRS money

I'd just like to be able to direct it to progressive causes....'stead of bailing out big business.

What would I like to weasel out of if I were a weasel like George Bush.....My driver's license...standing in line to get it.(The lines in Charlotte are horrendous!) Hey...I've driven 26 years without a moving violation. Even my sainted mother has had points on her license.

My signing statements

would include a blanket apology for all the times in the future that I behave like a jerk!

I don't ever recall that being necessary.....

Health coverage

I'd like to attach a signing statement for every doctor/dentist/whatnot visit indicating that if my insurance carrier isn't willing to pay more than X dollars for a procedure -- neither am I.

And don't cry to me about your malpractice insurance either. Not when you own a house on Glenwood, one in Hilton Head and a condo in Snowshoe neither -- dedgumyersorryspoiledarse.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

IRS here, too

But I think I'd try to hold back that portion of my taxes that might go to fund what I consider to be unreasonable in the defense budget. Once some of those pharmacist conscience clauses make their way through the courts, perhaps I might have a good basis for a lawsuit (??-Hey all you lawyers out there, I really need to read up on the law, how it works, how it relates to policy, etc--any suggestions? It's just a blind spot.)

Also, every time I click "I Agree" on a Microsoft licensing agreement.

I think it would be

my mortgage. Ooooooh, the bank would love that!

I would probably weasel out of blogging

Like I have done over the last few months :) But I think its time I get back on the horse and saddle up!
