Scotland No Mega-Dump Rally

Scotland County Of Tomorrow is sponsoring a Rally against mega-landfills on Monday, April 2nd, at 6:00 p.m., at 1404 West Boulevard, in Laurinburg, before a Commissioner's Meeting,
across the street at 7:00 p.m.
The SCOT website includes a map. www.nomegadump.org

The first landfill bill is expected next week, so this is a good time for a state wide Rally. If you are unable to attend, letters to the commissioners, to the editor, or to SCOT to be read at the Rally, would be appreciated. Contact information is on the website: www.nomegadump.org

Recent Scotland landfill activities below the fold:

Details about recent Scotland landfill activities are on our website under Documents:
* Waste Management preliminary franchise application to Scotland County. (2/28/07)
* Memo to Commissioners from County Manager John Crumpton about cancellation of
the Public Hearing. (3/14/07)
* Letter from Commission Chair J. D. Willis to Waste Management, which includes leaving the application on file. (3/15/07)
* Subsequent Press Release from SCOT; our sister chapter in Richmond County, SOAR; and our parent organization, BREDL www.bredl.org (3/20/07)

Waste Management has not left Scotland County, (they have been here since 2001) but their attention is now focused on state legislators. This article in the Laurinburg Exchange on 3/21 suggests (rather dramatically) that industry strategy will include cost complaints:

"... proposed changes in the state's solid waste rules ... but county officials believe the impact could be financially devastating.
'Locally, it is going to kill us', Scotland County Chairman J. D. Willis said. 'Originally when they started talking about it I thought they were looking at the environment. They are not concerned about the environment'...."

Landfill lobbyists likely ...

Stopping mega-dumps should be a top priority in protecting the quality of our air and water. The waste industry will persist with mega-dump proposals until it is understood that dumping is not economic development.

Welcome Zate

Thanks for bringing this here. I too live in the Sandhills and am glad that someone is paying attention to this. Please continue to keep us informed and tell your friends that they, as you, will be heard here!

Thanks ...

...momoaizo, for the welcome.

Moore County could have up to 450 large garbage trucks a day up and down US-1, and the site is closer to Moore populations than to Laurinburg. Richmond County is working closely with us. Your getting the word out up there will be great.

Legislative contact is key. This time last year, there was not much hope for a moratorium. It was citizen input that pushed it through, and we can do the same to get the strict
regulations needed for landfill permitting and siting.

I hope you can make one of your famous visits to Laurinburg sometime. I enjoy travels with you.

You Know -

NC doesn't recycle worth a damn.

I'm sorry you're going through this, zate & momo.

Our landfill was projected to last for ... I don't know ... about 50 years into the future, IIRC. Leslie would probably know.

They've cut that estimate by a 1/3. Not acceptable. You can't even recycle aluminum cat food cans. Only beverage cans because 'Wake doesn't accept them'.

Then.find.somebody.else.

I feel sorry for this man: "'Locally, it is going to kill us', Scotland County Chairman J. D. Willis said. 'Originally when they started talking about it I thought they were looking at the environment. They are not concerned about the environment'...."

It sounds like he was sold a bill of goods but when it was delivered - the box was empty.

I like your phrase, Unique:

It sounds like he was sold a bill of goods but when it was delivered - the box was empty.

Many folks in Scotland County have been "sold a bill of goods," including five of the seven County Commissioners. Screwy Hoolie's descriptions of Buncombe County Commission activities sound familiar.

A favorite quote, from the back of a pick-up truck parked in front of a tattoo parlor: "Unique is what I seek. Bizarre is what I are." No offense, Unique ... just couldn't resist :)
