Roy Carter, Candidate for CD-5, Live-blog Today at 7 p.m. - Question Thread

This evening at 7:00 p.m. we will be joined by Roy Carter, Candidate for Congress in North Carolina's 5th CD for a live-blog chat. This may be our final live-blog prior to the May 6 primary. Please leave your questions for Roy on this thread if you won't be able to join us this evening.

Three Questions

Welcome back to BlueNC, Roy. We're glad to have you here to share your views.

Your opponent in the Democratic Primary, Diane Hamby, liveblogged here a short time ago and I thought I'd offer you an opportunity to address a few of the questions I asked her:

  1. Given that the 5th has a strong history of ties to tobacco, I'm curious about your thoughts on expanding the SCHIP program by taxing tobacco. How would you have weighed the interests of your constituents had you been in the House when that bill came up?

  2. The lead issue right now among voters seems to be the economy and jobs. What hasn't Foxx done right with respect to the economy? And what would you do to bring new jobs to the 5th CD?

  3. Given that the 5th has a strong history of ties to tobacco, I'm curious about your thoughts on expanding the SCHIP program by taxing tobacco. How would you have weighed the interests of your constituents had you been in the House when that bill came up?

nctodc, 2) Foxx has done

nctodc,

2) Foxx has done nothing to bring jobs to the 5th district. She has done nothing to promote real economic development in our district. Yet, she travelled to Taiwan to receive praise in her work to solidify a Free Trade agreement that sent American jobs overseas.

We still make t-shirts, just not in West Jefferson. They still make socks, just not in Mt. Airy. They still make furniture, just not in Wilkes County. Foxx and the Bush administration have outsourced the people of the 5th district into the poorhouse.

We must work to bring new Green-jobs into the 5th district as well as re-negotiate NAFTA. Moreover, we should be supporting regional economic development by supporting organizations like ARC (the Appalachian Regional Commission), which Foxx voted against. I would also love to see us focus more on local farmer’s markets and opportunities for small business development.

Health plans

Since both major candidates for the Democratic party are saying they have a 'Health Plan', do you have a preference for either? And considering the power the medical industry has in Congress, can we realistically expect a real plan like the other civilized nations of the world? (trying to hold back my negative comments!)

Denno,

Thanks for your question. Both plans have their merits, however, they will both undergo change as they pass through the committees in the house and the senate. When I am your congressman, I will have the courage and the character to not be influenced by lobbyists from the medical, insurance or pharmaceutical fields, as I have vowed not too accept PAC money from any of those lobby groups. I am the only candidate in this race who is willing to put their money where there mouth is, and will refuse congressional health insurance until every man, woman and child in America is covered.

Of course I think that having access to affordable health coverage is possible. Not only should the citizens of this country and our congress expect affordable and accessible health care, they should demand it.

I'd appreciate an update on the campaign

High points? Worries? What's happening on the street-level? How are the media outlets handling your candidacy these days?

Update

I wake up each day wondering how it's possible that I am more excited than I was the day before. It is truly an honor and privilege to be running for congress here in the 5th District.
The people of this District are amazing.
We have been met with open arms in all 12 counties. Everywhere I go people tell that they are fed up with Virginia Foxx and her callous voting record and that they are ready for change.
The media has been extremely fair and very accessible. I am very proud to have been endorsed by the Winston-Salem Journal, as well as Democracy for America, The North Carolina Association of Educators, and the National Association of Educators. I am pleased to have been endorsed by Pam's Picks and Rep. Heath Shuler, and many local Democratic leaders.
My only worry is being able to reach every voter before May 6th, and to that end we are hosting some huge events over the next couple weeks. Thursday April 24th Jim Dean, the Democracy of America Chair and Howard Dean's brother, will be joining us for a rally at our headquarters in Winston-Salem, along with Tripp Jeffers who will be representing NCAE. This is the first time a national Democratic Party leader has come to the 5th District to support a candidate.
The rally will be followed up with a 12 County Campaign Bus tour May 1st and 2nd. The bus is amazing and will be unveiled at the rally!
I am very excited!

Hate Crimes Legislation

Hello Roy and thank you for taking time to answer some questions for us this evening.

Virginia Foxx voted against HR 1592, The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, also known as The Matthew Sheppard Act. This law would help law enforcement agencies across the country in prosecuting those who harm another based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This bill has been placed on hold and will more than likely be brought up again for a vote in the near future. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama support hate crimes legislation.

What is your stand on this issue?

Once elected, will you work to pass Hate Crimes Legislation?

Matthew Sheppard Act

Yes.

Hate Crimes

Just teasing you Wade with a one word response. This is a very important issue to me.
All hate crimes are a black eye in our society, I will vigorously support legislation to deter hate crimes of all types.

I was wondering....

My partner and I was sitting here discussing your one word response. LOL

Thank you for elaborating. This issue is very important to the thousands of GLBT voters and their families in the fifth district and across the county.

Virginia Foxx MUST GO!

Mercenaries

If there's a candidate within earshot, you can count on me to have this question:

What is your position on the practice of the US armed forces hiring armed contractors, otherwise known as mercenaries?

If you are not in favor of taxpayer dollars being used to fund mercenary armies, what actions would you take to end that practice?

mercenaries

I am completely against hiring mercenary armies and using tax payers dollars to do so. Mercenary armies that do not have to abide by the same laws of our land and are immune from the laws of the lands they are fighting in, should be squelched. Our brave men and women in the armed services are trained to follow codes of justice and are trained to represent our nation in an honorable way. It is shameful for our government to pay our military personnel less than half of the rate that we pay privatized, mercenary armies. With stronger support for our National Guard and a swift end to the war in Iraq, we would not have a need for mercenaries. Congress must hold those leaders accountable through oversight and legislation, which have broken our laws, deteriorated our national security and trampled on our civil liberties.

What do you consider to be the most important issue affecting the people of your Congressional District, and why?

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to stop in and give us your thoughts.

Most important issues

Thank you for your question funluvn.
While health care, the war in Iraq, global warming, and education are vitally important, the issue that dominates the minds of 5th District citizens is the economy. As we watch our housing market implode, gas prices escalate, and the price of goods and services steadily increase, working families are struggling to survive day to day. Without relief to home owners, students trying to pay their loans, and farmers being left out to dry, we headed down a long and dreary road. I believe that these concerns are shared by the citizens of the 5th District, the state of North Carolina, and the entire nation.

First, let me thank BlueNC for having me on live yet again. This is a great opportunity to directly interact with those on the grassroots of our party, district, and state. I am privileged to have the opportunity to be with you this evening and look forward to an honest dialogue.

Hi Betsy

Hi Betsy!
Thank you so much for hosting me again this evening. It's my pleasure being here. The work that you folks are doing is wonderful and I've much enjoyed reading all of the candidates live blogs. It can certainly be eye-opening, can't it?
I look forward to meeting everyone on Sunday.

Welcome, sir.

I SO want Ms. Foxx out of our Congress. Please tell me you're in a position to win this seat. When I look at the two of you side-by-side, I can't believe people in the district want to be represented by her.

Thank you James

I have never seen this district ready for a change in leadership, rest assured I will wage the most energetic, professional campaign the 5th District has ever seen. I am looking forward to defeating Foxx this November.

nctodc, Foxx can find no

nctodc,

Foxx can find no excuse for voting against funding for SCHIP. Her vote against SCHIP was a vote against working families and a vote that defies morality. I am very devoted to young people and feel very strongly that funding could have been found through other avenues. Our farmers, tobacco farmers, and others are really struggling with high gas and fertilizer cost.

Were I the representative of the 5th district at the time, as I will be next January, I would not have rested until I found the funding for expanding SCHIP.

Foxx says that we can’t afford to fund SCHIP, I say we can’t afford not to. No family should have to look a sick child in the face and wonder if they can afford necessary medical attention. If we can afford to give Big Oil 18 billion dollars in tax incentives, we can afford health insurance for children.

Free Trade

Thanks a lot for being here to blog with us. Do you believe that the human rights record of a country should have an impact on trade agreements with the United States?

Along these lines...

What about rights here in the US? What are your thoughts about DOMA?

Work Place Discrimination

What is your stand on adding sexual orientation/gender identity to the federal civil rights act?

DOMA

The Defense of Marriage Act...
I understand that this Act was used as a tool to stop the Bush Administration from offering up a constitutional amendment defining marriage to be between a man and a woman. It is the government's role to protect the freedoms of all people, regardless of their lifestyle. We must do everything in our power to create a safer, more free society, where tolerance is practiced and acceptance is our goal.

Human Rights.

Thank you Ashe for a great question.
Yes absolutely. We should not sell our soul for a quick profit to those countries that do not value human rights. Our members of congress should work in a diplomatic way to insure that workers around the globe are being treated in a dignified way and being paid a living wage.

I'm not trying to be negative, but can you give us the differences between you and your primary opponent?

It's alright Betsy

First and foremost I began my campaign on Labor Day, I have assembled a professional experienced staff, I have proven my ability to raise the money needed to run a viable campaign. I believe that people of are tired of traditional politicians who run for office every few years, just to prove they can. What we need, and what the people of the 5th District are yearning for, is someone who is willing to represent them, someone who was born here, has worked here, and who understands the needs of our people. I have raised a family here in Western North Carolina, have taught and coached in these communities all my life, and am proud to have received numerous endorsements.

I need to go back, Linda

but I think they all have.....of those I asked. I think I started asking this question when we had some negativity crop up from outside sources. I wanted to give candidates a chance to differentiate themselves in a positive way. I think so far they've all been able to do that. Maybe it is simply because they've come to BlueNC this year, but I think this cycle's crop of challengers is very, very impressive.

Economy/ Environment

My neighbor told me about BlueNC and this chance to ask Mr. Carter questions. I am fairly politically minded, but recently have become very interested/ obsessed in the upcoming elections out of concern for the economy and the world that we are leaving for future generations.

I noticed on your website that you have taken a postition opposing mountain top removal. I have 2 qestions related to the environment and the economy:

1. Can you expand on your environmental platform and discuss your ideas regarding other issues like clear cutting?

2. Obama and Clinton are talking about jump starting the economy and leading a new era in research and technology with 'green jobs'-- if you agree, what does that mean for our district? If you disagree, what do you propose?

Thanks to Mr. Carter for his time and to BlueNC for this great opportunity. I'm sorry I missed out on the other live blogs!

Welcome.

Great questions. Welcome to BlueNC. Hope you stick around.

Thanks for the warm welcome. You guys have done a good job with the site. Very Cool.

thank you NJC99

I have taken an active position to protect the citizens of the Globe Forrest from clear-cutting, or as it is also known, two-age regeneration, and will do the same for other communities in the 5th District.
We must protect our environment in the face of imminent development.
I ask myself regularly what we are leaving behind for our children and grandchildren.

For the 5th District, more green jobs would mean the stabilizing of an economy victimized by poor trade agreements. Green Jobs would revitalize our communities, help rescue family farmers, and provide new avenues for home builders. Our tourism industry would thrive while we become more responsible stewards of our precious mountains, streams and rivers.

Our pleasure.

The really need thing about this kind of forum is that it goes on even when I have to do carpool duty for my daughter's high school class! Just got back and am very happy to see all this good discussion.

I get emails from the current (and temporary) Member from your district and they are uniformly a waste of time and money.

Thank you again for putting yourself out there and engaging with people who care deeply that Congress be returned to the care of elected officials who understand the common good and the cause of peace.

I missed the fun

I had to work, but your insight reaffirms why I plan on voting for you.

One of my co-workers today expressed how happy he was to have cast his early vote for you up in Stokes Co.
What struck me though was that he was a Foxx voter until I told him about your candidacy. He too is a teacher and after researching your candidacy he described you as "an honest and genuine person," and I could not agree with him more as you make connections with the voters district-wide.

Your website is great, I LOVE the early voting info.
This proves your candidacy is truly about empowering and representing the people. I want to thank you for your effort.

wow.

I can't wait to meet this man at the Blogger Bash.

But this begs the question, James: what kind of bbq will be served? Yikes!
