Raising Kaine gives me another idea (and open thread)

I didnt see an open thread, so thought I should start one.

Raising Kaine has already impressed most of us with what they have done in the past on the state level. They continued that trend by working with ActBlue. Well. Here they go again. They will be endorsing candidates in the Democratic primary in 2007.

For each primary race that RK identifies for a potential endorsement, the candidates will be invited to introduce themselves and to interact with our community over a period of about 10 days. We're talking live blogs, Blog Talk Radio, diaries and comments, and whatever other way the candidates may creatively discover to reach out to us. Each candidate will have an equal opportunity to make his/her case - but it's up to the candidate to seize that opportunity and to make the most of it. If one candidate in a race chooses not to seek the endorsement, we'll obviously take that into account in making our decision. Hopefully, all candidates will take advantage of this opportunity to introduce themselves and their positions, strengths, and vision to Virginia's most passionate progressives.

There are six voters: Lowell, Josh, Brian, Eric, Rob, and the Raising Kaine community. Since it's a big deal for a progressive community to choose one Democrat over another, we're setting a high bar to receive the RK endorsement: five out of six votes. For the community vote, we'll announce a voting period where we will post a diary with a poll which allows users to choose a candidate to endorse or "No Endorsement." At the end of the predetermined voting period, we will announce the final number of votes and who, if anyone, gets the RK endorsement.

What does everyone think about this idea?

I don't want to endorse

Not during the primary

We are reaching out and we are inviting - actively. I would rather slit my wrists than make any of the wonderful candidates we have for lt. governor feel unwelcome or feel they have to compete for our attentions. Only one will win, but I want to learn about all of them because we need to keep them on the front burner for other offices.

I agree

I hope all the progressive candidates will feel welcome here. Individually, we can have our favorites, but I would not want to see BlueNC endorse candidates. I think endorsing one almost of necessity excludes the others, and I don't think that's good for the community.

More than two sides to every razor blade

which, frankly, SoDem shouldn't be possessing if she's talking that way :-P

I think that we should reserve the right to open up the discussion of endorsements. What if a well-funded, viable, but completely blue dog candidate challenges Kissell in the primary? I'd like to cast a vote to endorse Larry. Or what if there's a democratic primary where we know that one candidate is by far the best, and another better-known screw up candidate has a monopoly on votes?

Then again, if BlueNC endorses Edwards I'll leave.

To echo Sam

I think we should only do endorsements in races within North Carolina. And, I think those endorsements shoudl be done very carefully.

The one incentive to have an endorsement process is the platform that it gives the candidates. I mean, 10 days of live blogs, and people on both sides making the arguments could be pretty cool.

"Keep the Faith"

Um...they can do that anyway

It doesn't require an endorsement to set something like that up.

It would be more like a live-blog debate.

well yeah

but some of these candidates arent exactly bursting down our door....

"Keep the Faith"

Some candidates are afraid

of BlueNC. They don't want to be associated with our brand of political discourse, preferring instead the good old fashioned back-scratching and back-rooming approach. That's okay though. Plenty are reading and watching - on both sides of the aisle.

They'll come around.

ah yes

political discourse where true opinions are said. I can see how that would be scary. If some of these people had their true opinions and statements put out in public they would be voted out of office the next day.

Once again, If I ever run for office Im going to be just as rude and angry as I am in real life. People respect honesty in my experience.

LOL

hahahahahahahaha

Good one, SD.

Stunning integrity

That's the ticket.

So many people are so used to playing the happy horseshit game that they don't even know what they really think any more. It's all triangulated and sanitized and devoid of reality.

When someone lays it out straight, people respond with respect. They may not like the position, but the like the honesty. I don't think such honesty has to be "brutal." That's not necessary at all. But the impact of real honesty, in my opinion, is quite literally stunning.

I give presentations about the practice of stunning integrity in marketing and communications all the time. What's most surprising is how so many companies can't bring themselves to be straight with customers.

Stunning integrity. You heard it hear first.

You're right, I did hear it here first

....and I hope I hear it here over and over again.

Blue South is right. We do need to keep working hard to bring more candidates here. I just don't think the promise of an endorsement from BlueNC is going to entice them.....at least not yet.

That's right

The promise of talking to several hundred North Carolina activists in one swell foop without leaving their breakfast table . . . that's what'll entice them. Plus another 2000 reading their comments over the next couple of days.

We just need to ask them.

For what it's worth

I think the value of BlueNC is that it's sort of outside of the machine. That's a good thing. If we become a vehicle for endorsements, we become part of the machine, and that makes this site into something very different from what it is.

Of course, as individuals, most of us have shown preference for one candidate or another. I think that's to be expected. But I sure don't want BlueNC to become an official endorsement site. Who votes on the endorsement? All members? Does that include those who lurk? How often do you have to post to be able to vote on the endorsement? It's just too .... establishment for me.

This is how I see it as well. When your favorite bumpersticker is "Question Authority" you kinda hafta steer clear of behaving like the man.

I just want us to work hard to get it right often enough

that the politicians/candidates are courting us. Not for an endorsement....just to get the support of individual community members for the grassroots work we all do as well as the web activism.

Agree with Lcloud

BlueNC should not endorse single candidates. We should be a place where the light is always shining...always on and bright. Doesn't matter if we supported Heath Shuler, we can still voice our opinion of him, good or bad. Doesn't matter if we dislike Brrr, when he does something right, we note it and send our compliments. BlueNC is one of the too few mediums today that brings the truth to the people and invites everyone to voice their opinion. Choosing one, means rejecting many.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

Beautifully said, mo.

We don't choose one. We reserve the right to heap praise on any politician. We also reserve the right to give 'em all holy h.e.doublehockeysticks when they deserve it.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Exactly, Momo

BlueNC is one of the too few mediums today that brings the truth to the people and invites everyone to voice their opinion. Choosing one, means rejecting many.

The truth is what's important, and the spirited discourse we have here encourages us to get to the truth. I learn more here - or rather I'm challenged to go find answers from issues raised here - than I am from any official party site, any news site, or any other source right now. You folks make me work. Damn.

Of course, if it will drive off Sam I'm all for declaring for Edwards right now.

Good interview with Biden

on Countdown with Keith Olbermann last night. Did you see it? He did a good job. His web team has done some fairly creative truthiness-telling with his new website: HeadtoHead2008.com. It shows Biden talking about his plan for Iraq, and then the other Democratic contenders talking about their ideas for Iraq. Of course, there's some pretty selective choices. I know they didn't pick Edwards' strongest statements. But of course, this is a political campaign.

I like Biden, I always have. He's not my first choice for prez, but he's quite a campaigner, and his deft handling of the interview with Olbermann was impressive. Referring to Senator McCain as "John" took made McCain look not like a competitor, or a peer, but some kind of silly younger brother. Quite impressive indeed.

I'm Always Interested -

I'm always interested in what you have to say, Sam. You've been on the inside looking out.

I've never been inside so the view from 'st. elsewhere' is interesting.

Combination of "snide" and "remark". Sarcastic comment(s).
Also snarky (adj.) and snarkily (adv.)

His commentary was rife with snark.

2. snark:
A often-overused phrase that originally meant a loving, yet evil kind of sarcasm. Now, spreading like crabs at a whorehouse to even the real world, it signifies the horrifying end of real humor as we know it.

OMG! They said "Snark" on Entertainment Tonight!! Oooh, snap! Shout-out!

Well, if you can't read the sarcasm in my response

Then you have no business moderating a blog. Because there are no bloggers out there that are way too serious and don't get humor.

Please do not endorse a specific candidate out right........

unless it is me.......Just kidding.....

Seriously, I write here freely because there is no constraints reagrding my candidacy.
I feel like I am amoung friends here. I have never felt as though I were being "sized up" as a candidate.

If I were to feel this were a contest, I would not intend on it, but could become much more restrained, or reserved in what I said to any of you, thinking it might effect me later.

For example, Anglico has hammered me a few times, but I never felt threatened judged by him.

Blogging is a free exchange. If it becomes a contest, let me know, and although
I will be "front and center" on the field of debate, I will probably feel the need to be a
little more careful.

When necessary, I can be very careful and articulate, but I really enjoy the exchange I am able to engage here at BlueNC. I have never felt excluded here. Thanks.
