Presidential Debate Open Thread

Keith O is saying, "It's the stupid economy". The economy has overtaken the war in Iraq as the number one concern of many voters. Who is positioned to capitalize on this shift in the priorities of the American people?

Maybe their answers tonight will clear things up for those who haven't decided.

Which Republican will carry Michigan? Will Kos's endorsement push Romney over the top in the mitten state?

If they'll do it...

it's about time something of consequence got airtime. I wonder if they'll let Kucinich speak.

Nope....I thought they would

but it's just the three.

Wow

I may be an Edwards fan, but seeing the three of them on the stage together is really powerful. There is no group of three on the other side you can put beside Edwards, Obama and Clinton and have the level of leadership, competence, power, compassion. I did not feel this way at all in 2000 or 2004.

Yes, wow,

it made me think of the Roman establishment of the ruling triumvirate. Makes you wonder, doesn't it ...

Romney projected to win Michigan

My 14-yr-old wrote this on her blog today about Romney:

I don't know much about Mitt Romney. But I've seen his attack adverts. It's somewhat saddening to see that a grown man is expecting to have his way with the world simply by trashing everyone else into submission. Let's have a hearty guffaw over it.

About Romney's immovable hair:
Romney's immovable hair

And I know that if I lived in Michigan, I'd definitely support Romney's cause. Watch this, laugh, and decide for yourself.

The Mitten State should vote for Romney

Awwwww....she's learning how to snark. Isn't that cute?

It is a big mistake to give

It is a big mistake to give Romney's candidacy any oxygen. This play violates rule one in electoral politics. Don't get too cute. Just ask Gray Davis.

The thinly veiled delusion

that blankets the Republican candidates makes it completely impossible fore me to decide who I'd rather we defeat. A chronic flipflopper, a noun/verb/9-11 puppet, NUMEROUS choices that don't believe in science. My head's gonna explode before Super Tuesday.

They are a collective joke

Getting the race question out of the way early

I cringed at first, but both Hillary and Barack are handling it well.

Tim Russert continues the race questioning

If Barack Obama wasn't handling it so well, I'd be pissed about the question, but it is really giving them a chance to clear the air and say positive things, so what seems like a question meant to stump them turns out to be a chance for them to shine.

Excellent answers by Barack Obama.

Obama getting lots of air time

3 questions to Obama
1 to Clinton
1 to Edwards

I think it's a little more even now. :)

I couldn't really tell what he was saying

It sounded like "race based question" but I just couldn't tell.

Woah! Go Hillary...calling Bush's begging pathetic

Damn....she's handling this question well. I don't like the commentators, but I like that they are able to sit down and be a bit more relaxed.

Anyone know?

Is John Edwards perhaps by any chance related to a former textile mill employee, or employees of come sort?

Surely, I jest.

I remember something about that

I just don't recall where I heard it. I actually think Clinton opened with it. (Actually, she did.) :)

It looks like Obama is kinda paying

for his answer about his weakness. His answer was honest and humorous, but leaves him open a bit to criticism.

I love this....they asked Obama about those lovely emails saying he's a Muslim, he was sworn in using the Koran and that he won't pledge allegiance to the flag. It was fun to see Obama laugh and he handled the question beautifully.

Soooo much easier to pick apart an R/D debate

I keep finding myself saying..."that's a good point" after each of them. I guess I'm easy to please tonight.

I'm not exactly a Hillary supporter...

but if I were in her camp, I'd definitely try to have her stop reinforcing Obama's views on every cut scene. Countless times tonight, while Obama speaks, the camera pans over to Hillary as her eyes widen and nod along with every point Barack makes. Perhaps I'm crazy, but it's almost like he's convincing HER too. :]

Whazzzat?????

After seeing this video....

and hearing THIS....

Howard Fineman: Edwards did well tonight... Edwards is probably gonna win Nevada.

I'm actually starting to get my hopes up for a surprise finish in Nevada.

Holding your tongue

You might want to practice holding your tongue....biting it....sitting on your hands...anything to keep you from digging a deeper hole.

Not digging a hole

Can you imagine what would have happened if I had said "Don't get your hopes up too high Robert?"

Different standards for different folks i guess...but it's fine. Like My stepdaughter would say: Whatever.

It isn't different standards for different folks

It's different standards for folks who are known to incite and then repeatedly talk about how "angry" someone is. Your intentions are suspect whereas mine are not in this particular scenario.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

What???

I'm known to "incite"?
Where the hell did you get that from?
And suspect intentions? I have no intentions at all besides commenting on stuff that I believe is wrong and/or grossly exaggerated.
Isn't that what commenting is all about? Or are we supposed to just agree all the time?

Left on 49

It isn't that you comment, it's how you comment

The comment you started with, "I hate to rain on your parade" could have been started a little nicer since you were commenting on an Edwards thread written by someone else. You say you were correcting grossly exaggerated information, but come to find out you are calling a very narrow segment of the population, so the experience you were using to refute Robert's assertion wasn't really that representative of the population of South Carolina, but you spoke as if the 100 phone calls you had made were definitive proof that Robert was wrong.

I will take the rest of this to email b/c I have to go put some food on my family.

***************************
Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

narrow segment

African Americans make up half of the Democratic vote in SC.
I didn't make 100 calls, I made 800 calls when I made that comment.
By now I've made 1,000 and still no mention of Edwards.
Which brings me back to different standards, when Robert says that "I lived there in 2004, I can tell you, he is very popular among the locals", you don't ask him who these people are he knows or who told him that, but when I say I know a lot of people who don't even seem to have Edwards on their "radar" i get asked who these people are and what part of the electorate they represent.

Left on 49

Um....because I know

I've lived here almost all my life. (a few years in Ohio that I'd rather have back) I don't know everything, but I have a pretty good understanding of the south and southern voters. I don't need to ask Robert that. Edwards won SC in 2004 - obviously many of those voters did and probably still do love Edwards. I know that because...well....I was here. The only reason I asked you is because of your less than diplomatic entry into the conversation and your assertion that nobody is voting for Edwards. I've been making voter id calls for over 20 years in this area - not South Carolina, but close enough. I've never called 1000 people who were almost unanimous in their support for one candidate - Never. Not once. It isn't that I don't believe you, but I was curious since it's a phenomenon I've never seen. At first I assumed you were calling a list of already identified Obama supporters to rally them to GOTV. That could explain it. I didn't know, so I asked.

Quite obviously, you and Robert aren't calling the same lists.

***************************
Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Oh....and the incite comment was just pertaining to

comments you've directed at Robert.... Sorry, I didn't mean to make some sweeping proclamation that you are a trouble maker.

***************************
Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Ok

Of course the Obama campaign and the Edwards campaign are going to have slightly different lists. They will have been compiled in different ways by different groups.

Answers to questions can vary based on how the questions are worded, and indeed how they are asked.

So why don't we call this one a draw and move on. We've got so many people involved in these primaries - most of whom are supporting Obama or Edwards - if we can't agree to stop pissing on each other, then we need to take two giant steps back from the keyboard and walk the hell away from it for a while.

It's one thing to discuss the differences in policies, or to talk about who endorsed whom and why - but when we get down to who is more inciteful, who posts more one whose threads - sorry - I'm calling bullshit. There are a lot more useful things to do with this site.

Focus on the issues, and not on each other.

Indeed.
I'm heading to SC again and I'll see you all after January 26th when Obama is one step closer to being our nominee.

call me crazy, but methinks this is moreso a preventative measure as to not have all of us peeing on our computers, no?

Well . . .

You really do take things literally. But if you do have the urge to pee on your computer, by all means....STEP AWAY FROM THE MACHINE. Even if you get it to work again, you'll never get the smell out. It's just nasty.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

Haha.

I'm just sick of all the primary shenanigans, so I think from now until Super Tuesday, I'm just gonna be a smartass and make little to no sense. Or, I'll just make Jimmy Carter comments.

To quote Mr. Carter himself, sorta...

"You had your chance with Jimmy Carter, and you fucking blew it. So get fucked. Fucking country"
