With the introduction of the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt (and other electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids), we need to start to create a market for these cars by introducing charging stations around the state. While there are plans for some localities to have pilot programs, there needs to be a much greater effort throughout the state to accommodate these vehicles. Widespread construction of charging stations should help to create a market for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
There are certain steps local and state governments can take in order to accomplish this. Towns could begin to require that all new developments include a certain percentage of charging station accessible parking spaces. In addition, I would also suggest that steps be taken to encourage all existing parking lots upgrade to accommodate these new generations of vehicles. Finally, governments needs to lead by example and begin introducing charging stations stations at all public facilities.
