Following the lead of George W. Bush and Carl Rove, Sarah Palin is on a mission to dumb down America. I call it the Palin Doctrine. And she's damned proud of it! Will North Carolina be duped? Again?
Note Palin's assertion that Americans long to have Joe Six-Pack in the White house. "It's time that normal Joe Six-Pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency," she said. A McCain-Palin win will "put government back on the side of the people of Joe Six-Pack like me."
Those absurd comments just flew all over me. Governor Palin frequently spews chunks of folksy, anti-intellectual rhetoric. She would be deserving of pity, were she not so insulting.
Just who exactly is Joe Six-Pack? A beer drinker, or a exercise addict like John Basedow? Or both? If it's a beer reference, don't we have Joe Six-Pack there already, and hasn't he performed criminally?
Palin is both secretive and defensive about her reading habits. Hell, she's defensive about a lot of things. "I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too," she says. "Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, 'Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America."
Palin is defensive about her lack of travel outside Alaska. "I'm not one of those who maybe come from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduated college and their parents get them a passport and a backpack and say, 'Go off and travel the world.' Noooo. I worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life, until I had kids. I was not part of, I guess, that culture."
She then credits “education” as helping her understand the world. Wait a minute--I had the impression she disapproved of education as elitist!
What is the “culture” to which Palin refers? What's her point? Is one's lack of travel a badge of honor? Some kind of proof that you’re not a spoiled rich kid?
I left the U.S. for the first time around age 27, and I've traveled out of the country well under 10 times. I went to Europe once, just four years ago. Parents paid for none of my travel, with the exception of a Carnival Cruise. Am I part of “that culture?”
My maternal grandparents were Democrats. They were tobacco farmers in Eastern North Carolina, and neither completed high school. Despite their rural locale and lack of formal education, I am absolutely certain they would not want Joe Six-Pack--or in their case, Joe "Moonshine" Mobley (local still operator) in the White House. The whole concept of promoting low standards for high level government jobs is outrageous. North Carolinians won't fall for it this time.
Some people are smug about the education they've earned. They're proud they attended good schools--be it an Ivy League institution, or N.C. State. They seem to think such a pedigree makes them better than others. They are wrong.
Likewise, there's no shame in being uneducated. It does not necessarily reflect poorly on one's intelligence. A lack of formal education may be unfortunate, but it is what it is. Being boastful about one's ignorance and lack of education, however, is just wrongheaded.
Palin’s apparent disdain for people who are not provincial is divisive. It's a tactic that is failing. In fact, it’s backfiring. Both she and John McCain can invoke Ronald Reagan's name all they like. It’s no use.
I predicted intelligent conservatives would not take to her. They're right to be terrified. The last thing this country needs is a plan to not only get dumber--but be PROUD of it.*
*Edited to add: Is she really STILL mispronouncing the word "nuclear?" Unbelievable. What is it about Republicans and that word?
Comments
You put it so very well, thank you.
It's the media and the elite Democratic Party Leftists that just can't get with Sarah Sixpack and her enlightening folk sayings that are what is driving this country into the ground.
Or, maybe it's the lying, stealing, conniving Neo-Con men and women that purposely drove this country into the ground for fun and profit that is the problem, Sarah. Check the poll numbers, hon. I think Americans know what is needed, and it isn't a Frances McDormand's character, Marge Gunderson from the film Fargo sound-alike that will lead us out of the wilderness. Yah?
North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!
North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!
Don't dump on Margie!
She was smart, ethical, had good judgment, was qualified for her job, and was a genuine straight shooter. Sarah Palin, you're no Marge Gunderson!

When you're right, you're right!
Thx, coach!

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!
You just nailed it.
I honestly hadn't been able to put my finger on why her "folksy" style bothered me so much and this is it. I've complained about it in our schools and that is exactly what bothers me about her.
She is not an Everyman or Everywoman and I think that is what she's going for. I know a lot of working class and middle class voters who aren't stupid and some who were in 2000 and 2004 who have wisened up doggoneit.

Is this a strategy of the r's?
Not only does Palin think it's good to be dumb but so does McCrory. Is this their new tactic (or is that strategy)? I just don't get it....are they saying....It's kewl to be a fool!?!
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
Progressive Discussions
Let's not forget, we elected Dubya.
Twice, as a matter of fact, which doesn't say a hell of a lot about America's opinion of intellectualism. Regardless of possible election fraud, the nimrod had around 50% of voters' pulling for him.
Palin might just be able to hee-haw her way into the White House, and the Presidency of the Senate... :O
A few times last night
while watching Moose Mom at Democratic HQ in High Point with about 50 fired-up other Dems, I had the impression that someone had substituted Tina Fey when the camera had cut away. Palin is a caricature of a woman.

I must apolgize to Dan Quayle
After McCain chose Palin I got in some trouble on here and was called a sexist for saying that Sarah Palin was and I quote " Dan Quayle with #%$'s " It was even deleated from the list.
After observing Gov. Palin and watching the debate last night, I feel I need to apolgize for my comment again.
But not to the group here, but to Vice-President Quayle.
For in comparison to Gov. Palin, he is a %@ing genius.
Valley Girl
Alaska's version of a Valley Girl. Very pretty but basically a talking head.
If old man McCain dies in office - we're stuck with someone w/the IQ of a garden vegetable. I know that was rude and terribly un-PC; tough.
Poor thing. Go back and watch the Russian shoreline. We'll need someone to do that.
Welcome back!
It's been forever since you've hung out with us or left a comment. How are you doing?

The "Common Folk"
I spent many a summer deep "in country" with my grandparents, in the hills and hollers of WV, my home state. I have often said that should one care to scratch the surface of any given "country bumpkin," one might find a rather healthy populist streak. I don't think "progressives" have quite figured out how to access that.
But Sarah Palin has, according to the author of this article:
Which is exactly what they saw in George Bush
That worked out really well.
The author makes a case for blending ignorance and narcissism into a proud and toxic stew. Just what we need.

Doubts about Dole?
Well...
I don't think he's making a case for it.
Does he sound gleeful to you?
I didn't say that well
You're right ... he's just pointing out that others are making the case.
