Open thread: Monday, Monday

Two weeks to Christmas day and my end-of-year work work is kicking into high gear. If you're the Puppetmaster or Jim Black, this should come as good news because I won't have time to deliver the scorn and ridicule you both deserve.

A few news bits today caught my interest.

The N&O weighs in, sensibly, on religious freedom. Expect the wackos to be out in full force insisting that their Christian god should have a permanent place in our courtrooms.

The "reporters" Under the Dome quite nearly cut-and-paste a press release from the Perdue campaign as their lead story. I received the campaign email last week.

The Dome also speculates that our Very Senior Senator Dull is test-driving some talking points for her 2008 reelection bid. She mentions her "crucial" role in getting (1) tobacco money for North Carolina, (2) more funding for building highways, (3) and more tax cuts for the rich. God I reeeeeally hope she runs. Of course, she forgot to mention her other big accomplishment: Destroy America's Integrity and Honor Throughout the World.

And finally, how could we start the week without one more newspaper weighing in on the trials and tribulations of the Soon-To-Be-Ex-Speaker. The Wilmington Star News has the commentary.

PS Forgot to add kudos to the News and Observer for their ongoing coverage of Mercenaries R Us. I spent a bunch of time reviewing their many stories this weekend, which add up to a frightening saga of corruption and greed. I hope the paper will roll the whole mess up into an extended series for year's end. Between Blackwater and Jim Black, I can't help wondering if the name has something to do with the ethical disposition.

You Catch More Flies with Honey than Vinegar

You know, Anglico, you would present the Democratic Party more attractively to more people if you stopped saying things like: "Expect the wackos to be out in full force insisting that their Christian god should have a permanent place in our courtrooms."

Whether God and/or religion belongs in the courtroom is not my point. My point is the Republican Party has used religion to divide the American people. The Democratic Party should not follow suit.

I believe our party should be *inclusive* not *exclusive* and statements like that alienate. I'm a Christian and I'm not a wacko. I'd appreciate your consideration. If it looks bad to me as a lifelong Democrat, how is it going to look to a fencesitter who's trying to decide which party to belong to?

Point taken.

How about this:

Expect extremists on the religious right to mount an aggressive campaign to fight the use of non-Christian holy books in our courtrooms.

Better? Either way you say it, it is already happening in full force.

This is a good point.

This is a good point. Perhaps it doesn't make for as interesting reading, but many Dem bloggers could stand to take the high road sometimes.

One example of a very common behavior is when bloggers reference Rush Limbaugh. They almost always reapond to something he does by first calling him "fat." First, Rush used to be huge, but he lost a lot of weight and looks fairly average now. Second, if you are going to make Rush out to be one of the evil conservative meanies, don't act like one and get all childish with the name-calling even if he is fat. Whatever moral high-ground you may have had is at least diminished.

Yes, yes, I've heard the excuses. I know the argument goes something like "they've been so evil, mean and stinky that you can't expect us to overcome our outrage and behave civilly." I certainly empathize, but one has to recognize they become more like those who they despise when they act like them.

I would never pick on another fat person

because of her/his size. Now the fact he carred a huge bottle of viagra flying solo to a vacation spot well-known for it's child sex that I would pick on.

I would also pick on his hypocrisy - you know...the whole drug addiction thing. Taking drugs his way is no more legitimate than being a street user. Hypocrisy is definately something to pick on...or point out.

Physical appearance....nah...I save that one for Paris Hilton. ;-)

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

its a blog

Its not a political advertisement. Its not a newspaper commentary. Its a blog.

I dont care what Anglico says. And I certainly dont care how much hate and anger he directs at Republicans. I dont despise the Republicans who were in charge for being mean. I despise them for being evil and destroying my country. They can call Nancy Pelosi and Hillary ugly, lesbian communists all they want.

As long as we direct it towards people like Cheney, Rumsfeld, Delay etc and not at average Americans who happen to have different beliefs than us then we are fine. When we start going the Ann Coulter route then we have a problem.

"Keep the Faith"

Rush used to be huge

You always exaggerate everything most of the time.

...very common behavior is when bloggers reference Rush Limbaugh. They almost always reapond...

Rush used to be huge, now he's a has been.

"Take the high road"

True. And that would include not spreading RW smears about good Democrats.

Peace and goodwill to all men. Yeah, right.

BleuNC is now successful enough to attract concern trolls.

Next year should be fun. I think i'll stop by a little more often.

Track changes

Am I the only person who clicks on "track changes" and gets sent to the home page?

Grrrrrrr. Where IS Lance when we need him.

re: Track changes

Nope, A. I get the same thing ... home page. :(

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

off and on

sometimes it does it. sometimes it doesnt. started...yesterday?

"Keep the Faith"

I've emailed him...

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I get a page listing all of

I get a page listing all of the recent comments with the threads they were posted to in descending chronoligical order from most recently changed to oldest.

this is the same as in other drupal sites that i'm a member of.

i'm using Firefox 2.0 on a Mac G5 running OS X 10.3.9, if that makes any difference.

I'm Not a Troll

I don't have the time or the inclination to be a troll.

I logged on to check a PM a moved to the home page and there it was. Certainly Anglico has the right to say anything she (?) wants on her own blog but it isn't really a private blog and first impressions count.

If I, as a Democrat, felt smacked in the face with a stinky fish, how would someone else feel? 'Let's check out those Democrats, the Republicans have made a mess of it.' They read that on the front page and 'Oh, my God! They really are baby-eaters!' Not a good first impression. Of course that's just an example, but I have seen Democrats accused of being 'baby-killers' because they're pro-choice. Human beings do extrapolate and draw conclusions on statements. That's reality.

I guess that means I do prefer to take the high ground.

Anglico is a man

and your point was taken. He changed the post. While we all can stand to clean up our act every know and then, sometimes honest feelings come out. It just happens and you're perfectly welcome to disagree with us publicly. I do.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

I noticed

I just sent him a PM and checked his profile. I consider 'generic' or 'unisex' or writing a good thing. YMMV

I really appreciate your comment

This blogging thing is a crazy world where it's easy to get insulated and isolated. Which is one reason have fresh perspectives is so valuable. I don't always communicate how much I welcome different points of view, but I should. Yours in particular made me think . . . and has already had an impact on some of what I'm writing.

So thank you.

PS Being mistaken for a "she" is the highest form of compliment in my book. :)
