My daughter and I spent the day dragging our holiday decorations from the old Christmas closet and spreading them around the house and yard. She's got a great eye for design and we always have much fun. I figure if we're going to go to all the trouble, we might as well have the place gussied up for a good long while.
I love looking at decorated Christmas trees. Tomorrow we put up the lights outside. Always a big adventure.

An sweet old Chinese man
came up to us in the hardware store, showing much excitement about the lights Lily and I we were buying. He said:
Forgot to ask . . .
What do you want for Christmas?
I'd settle for world peace.

we always
do this the friday or saturday after Thanksgiving. After three or four days off, the kids are stir crazy and doing the tree and lights makes them...well, crazier. But, still, they love it. The downside is having to water the tree twice a day, but I can't see buying a fake tree yet. I've always loved the real ones so much.
I am feeling a little guilty about the energy usage this year, so I'm limiting myself to only lighting up at night when the kids are awake. When they go to sleep, the lights go out.

Nice column on David Price
which is a surprise since it's written by Steve Ford at the News and Observer. It's worth the read.
Robert, I save energy all year long
Just so I can burn it up over Christmas. Oh well. We put up three trees and I do lights out front on the bushes. I just can't help myself. If it's dark out the lights are on. However, we have almost completely changed out the old bulbs with those cute little corkscrew bulbs. Maybe that will help make up for it.

compact fluorescent big colored bulbs.
I threaten each year to switch back to the big gaudy colored bulbs like my Dad used back in the day. If someone came out with some compact fluroescent versions, I might do it!!! The cost, oy!

Not quite the
replace them as they burn out type of project. My mother still uses those bulbs on her large tree, but then she gets a 12 footer....well....probably not anymore. Maybe only 11 - lower ceilings in the post-divorce house.

Aizo will be bringing Akiko home
To meet us this Christmas. So, we are trying to finish at least one of the bathrooms. Got the tree decorated and the front porch done. For the next three weeks, I will be cleaning, painting, decorating, shopping, wrapping presents and hoping that Akiko will enjoy her first American Christmas.
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
a big fat mortgage
We have been trying for a year to get plans finalized for an addition to our home plus solar panels. I want to blog later about the ins and outs of tax credits, etc. on going solar. It has taken longer than we thought but now have a friendly banker, so instead of Christmas decorations right now I am throwing stuff into boxes to go into storage so we can get the house in good order for a pre-mortgage appraisal.(Did I mention I have a seven year old son whose stuff is all over the place?) So with luck, we will be redoing the septic field for Christmas and building in the new year.
Oh, Anglico - Chinese friends of mine love Christmas. I mean, an old man in red(good luck color) with a long white beard, giving presents to children WHO HAVE BEHAVED WELL. Sort of Confucian, when you think about it. I spent Christmas in China in 99 -unfortunately, Christmas Eve is a time for big banquets, so being in a hotel with a baby and drunks in the hall was no ho-ho-ho.

Yeah, screw that. I'll start working with Republicans when they start acting like something other than Nazi fascists.
