I know this will get some people riled up but...

Huckabee's "We’ve had a Congress that’s spent money like John Edwards at a beauty shop." is a classic line. It's also true.

McCain's apology to drunken sailors for comparing them to Congress was a nice one too.

I used to worry about Huckabee, but anyone who is this stupid...

Huckabee. Doesn't. Believe. In. Evolution.

Next time he or his family gets an infection, I'm asking that he accept only penicillin, since bacterial resistance is a type of evolution, of which he does not believe. Therefore, penicillin should work just fine. If they die, then he was wrong. THAT, is evolution as well.

He still worries me...

I would have thought the shift away from the Republican Party, blessed though it may be, means those still voting in the Republican primary this year will be even more right wing. Eventaully these people will decide that McCain and Guiliani aren't morally perfect enough, that Mitt Romney is just hair and a suit (I have a growing suspicion he's John Kerry in disguise...), and realize Fred Thompson hasn't done anything but been on the Law and Order program. My fear is these people will figure all this out in time to realize Huckabee is probably the person they really want to vote for...and they'll probably think not believing in evolution is a well-reasoned position.

Would you be proud of how

Would you be proud of how the Republican Congress blew through all that money?

smart Republicans will run against Bush Republicanism

Come out for a lower national debt, a balanced budget, smaller government, less policing of the world. Recall the era before Bush.

It's not what you spend. It's how you spend it.

Remember, I"m one of those liberals who likes to spend government money. :) So spending money, in and of itself, is not a bad thing to me. It's what you spend it on that makes me crazy. Spending it ill-conceived, mis-managed, immoral wars that could have been prevented if you weren't running around with your head up your ass is not my idea of good money management.

Spend it on programs that give individuals and small businesses a chance to build themselves up and make the country work - I'm all for it. Spend it on programs that make the public schools work for everyone - I'm all for it. Spend it on programs that truly make America's armed forces stronger (by paying the ground troops what they're worth, and giving them the equipment, education and support that they really need), I'm all for it.

Piss it away on contracts with Halliburton? Nope.

Typo?

government money

Surely you meant "taxpayer money," right?

:-D

SPLib, Taxpayers ARE the government. The government is us. One and the same. So to me those two words, in that context, are interchangeable.

I was hoping you'd say that

so I wouldn't have to.

And you did it with such grace and good humor! Thanks.

Maybe

But, I think far too many people, especially those IN government, lose sight of the fact that "government" money is money taken from the taxpayers. If they held that money more sacred and appreciated the work that went into it, we wouldn't have budget problems.

Plus, if Congress (this one or the last one) supposedly "is" (is representative of) the taxpayer, we're screwed.

Another one for the pile

I recently received a card in the mail from the DMV reminding me to renew my license.

The back of the card states, "DMV accepts personal (no third party) checks for your license provided you have two acceptable forms of identification."

Does anyone see the irony here? They'll give you a new license with only your old license as an ID, but if you want to write a check, they'll need another form of ID to verify who you are.

Hahahaha!

You know, I never even thought about that when I renewed mine.

So much for your anonymity

Good plug Blue. (or should I say Will?)

I don't like anonymity in publications (print or web). I like to see the name of the writer.

this is a joke, right?

anonymity

It could be a joke. Or, perhaps:

My parents had strange tastes in names, or

I am learning hypocrisy in case I want to become a Republican.

Actually, it was meant jokingly. My real name is John Shaw of Cary, NC. You can be sure that if I make a post that states a fact or makes an accusation I will make sure my real name is on it.

So Momoaizo doesnt worry

I included my name in the email I sent to them, and I agreed to the brief interview. So they got rid of my anonymity, but I was perfectly ok with it.

From the RNC - their strategy in 08.

Republicans, Duncan said, were optimistic about America. “The Democrat[ic] Party is all negative. Their attitude is, everything is wrong with the country.“

Why then, a reporter asked, do fourth-fifths of country believe the country is headed in the wrong direction?
A superficial answer: Duncan cannot really say, and won’t, that Americans are frustrated with the administration, are growing tired of the Republican brand, are angry about Iraq and believed the last Republican Congress was a disaster. Instead, he says: “We’ve got to show that the Democrats want a major tax increase.”

New poll

All of you know where I stand on Civitas and Civitas polls. But, Under the Dome has this months results, and they are great when you think about where Dole, Hayes, etc etc have been on the issues.

57% dissaprove of Bush's job. 35% think the surge is making things worse. 35% think the surge is having no effect. only 18% think the surge is improving things.

Remember that Governor

that lived on foodstamps?

Well now 4 members of congress are doing the same for a week.

"No organic foods, no fresh vegetables, we were looking for the cheapest of everything," McGovern said. "We got spaghetti and hamburger meat that was high in fat -- the fattiest meat on the shelf. I have high cholesterol and always try to get the leanest, but it's expensive. It's almost impossible to make healthy choices on a food stamp diet."

$21 a week?

I had no idea it was that low. Compared to the billions that we gave away to the 1%er's so that they wouldn't have to suffer the indignity of buying a Mercedes S-Class instead of the BMW 7- Series sedan. Oh, the horror. I'm sure that the R's will say that charities such as food banks and Meals on Wheels will make up the difference, and that if these people really wanted to eat, they take that third (or fourth) job. Sometimes I'm ashamed of how this country treats the poorest among us- strike that, I am ashamed.

The only time

Im not ashamed at how we treat our fellow human beings is when I block it out of my mind.

Income requirements for food stamps

At a really bad time in my life, I applied for food stamps - and that $21 a week would have made a difference, believe me. But I made $10 a month too much. Man that hurt.

Foodstamps are administered by the County Department of Social Services, and the guidelines can be pretty complicated, but here is a simple formula I found for Cabbarus County.

Q: Food Stamps - What is(sic) the income limits for Food Stamps households?

A: $1009 for households of 1, $1354 for households of 2, $1698 for households of 3, $2043 for households of 4, $2387 for households of 5.

It's not a lot. Also, In most places, if an adult is not responsible for children, they are only eligible for benefits for 3 months out of 36 months. That would include the elderly.

Congress investigates. Dole skips meeting

A committee of U.S. senators got an earful Wednesday about controversial private Medicare plans that have caused hundreds in North Carolina to complain about their over-aggressive marketing and questionable value.

Following

Dole missed Wednesday's meeting because of a scheduling conflict, but Auth said her office is following the issue closely.

Following. Not leading. Following. Just what you'd expect.

Do you think maybe she's forgetting to attend

the meetings? Maybe someone on her staff needs to keep her calendar for her. I know her health isn't good after a hip replacement and then a mysteriously short bout with the flu. (Maybe it wasn't the real flu, just a bug) Who knows, but she's been having lots of health issues and it appears to have had a negative impact on her ability to carry out her duties.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
