But proponents of making the realtors help pay for the growth that brings them their billions in profits have their work cut out for them, and so do county leaders turning to the sales tax for additional revenue. The combination of profit-protecting realtors and the anti-tax, stick-your-head-in-the-sand ideologues and legislators is a formidable force, especially when rarely confronted about their misleading rhetoric and flawed analyses.

It is past time for more people to fight this unholy alliance head on. Not only are schools and the quality of life in several counties at stake, so too is the nature of the state's policy debate that affects our future. Big money and anti-government zealots have had their way too long.

Well said.

complete confusion on the "home tax"

I gave a ride today to another mom of a third grader - we chaperoned a field trip to downtown Durham. On the way, we talked a little about needing to go vote, and the many different races to decide. She said, 'Well, I know one thing - I am voting against the home tax.' I casually said, well, I am for it, actually, and tried to feel her out on it. We are in Orange County, where schools are the most important local issue most of the time. After listening to this woman, it was clear that she was totally misinformed on what the transfer tax was all about. She thought it was an extra yearly tax on home owners. When I explained that it was just a tiny tax on a sale of property, to help the schools and parks so we did not have to raise other taxes that hurt regular folks, she was really embarrassed.

I tried to gently remind her that if she saw signs against it on every corner, and got two mailings a week against it, then the common sense question to ask was: who needs to run such an expensive campaign to stop it? This was like a revelation for her - to think about who would not want this to pass.

Also, over lunch with the kids, I think I convinced my son's teacher to vote for Jim Neal. Funny, I have not met a teacher who thinks that fully funding No Child Left Behind is a good idea. In fact, I explained NCLB to my son tonight and now he holds me personally responsible for electing people to rid him of those doggone tests! He says we have to convince more people to vote for Jim Neal!

I have created a nine year old political zealot. I will unleash him on you all at the bloggers bash.

Meek on MSNBC

Note: Redlasso is a great tool. It's like an Internet DVR.

There are people in every time and every land who want to stop history in its tracks. They fear the future, mistrust the present, and invoke the security of the comfortable past which, in fact, never existed. - Robert F. Kennedy
