The first sentence of this Mercury News editorial sums up the stance of the article and has about as much nuance as a vibrator with a kick-start.

Global warming is the greatest environmental threat that humanity has ever faced.

So simple, yet so forceful. And everyday new threats from global warming pop-up and are clearly ignored by Conservatives.

Fish species in the Great Barrier Reef are starving to death because climate change is killing off their food source, an environmental study conducted over five years by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) has revealed.

The study found that rising sea temperatures had bleached more than 30 per cent of the world's coral reefs, as a result of which, smaller fish which normally feeds on live coral are dying off.

This could throw the fish food chain out of balance, and consequently hinder local fishing and tourism operations, the study said.

And, of course, other countries are beginning to recognize the danger of global warming to their own stability.

Global warming could have a major effect on the health of the Chinese people and the country's agriculture, according to a National Assessment Report on Climate Change.

Temperatures in China could rise 1.3 - 2.1 degrees by 2020.

The report, China's first authoritative and comprehensive review compiled by multiple departments and experts over four years, was released in Beijing yesterday by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The report is a study of global warming and its influence and recommendations on the protection of society and the economy.

"The report will serve as the country's scientific and technical reference in policy making and international co-operation," Vice-minister of MOST, Li Xueyong said.

When the Chinese get it, you must wonder how they will attack it. There is plenty of economic opportunity to be had cleaning up the planet and the Chinese probably see this as just one more thing they can sell the U.S.
