My Call to the Hayes Campaign

Last Friday, was a breaking point of sorts in my household. I've become accustomed to receiving mailers from Robin Hayes for the last couple weeks, and inspecting them before they went into the garbage.

Well, one of the TWO mailings I received that day was critical of Larry's stance on the war in Iraq. The mailer essentially was a big, block-lettered advertisement calling Larry Kissell a flip-flopper. This was the last straw. I couldn't resist staying quiet any longer. I picked up the phone book and turned to the H section.

After finding the Hayes office phone number, I starting dialing, half-expectiing for nobody to pick up. Five rings later a nice young man's voice came on the other end of the line. The man stated his name, and I stated that I had some questions, regarding the mailings the Hayes' camp is sending out. Here's what transpired:

Me: Yes sir, I've got a few questions bout these mailers you guys are sending out.

Staffer: Okay...I'll be glad to help, though, we're not directly responsible for those...

Me: Well, I'm just wonderin', on this latest mailer, you guys are accusing Larry Kissell of being a flip-flopper, right?

Staffer: Well..ummm.

Me: Because, you know, I just find that a little odd considering the well-documented flip-flop by Congressman Hayes on the CAFTA front.

(to my shock...)

Staffer: Well, I guess you're right. You do have a point.

Me: It's pretty much a height of hypocrisy, huh?

Staffer: Well, I guess, what the mailer is saying is that Larry hasn't been consistent on Iraq.

Me: Well, Larry hasn't cast one vote in the United States Congress. Mr. Hayes, sure has voted, and we've all seen his monumental vote for CAFTA, plain as day, you know, the one he was absolutely, and horizontally opposed to?

Staffer: Again, we're not responsible for those mailers, but I can give you the number to call to talk to someone who may know a little more..

Me: Okay, well thanks for your time. I appreciate you talking to me.

To his credit, the staffer was as nice as he could be, and although he was likely being coy, he seemed a little weary about his faith in Robin Hayes.

Either way, nobody is EVER going to beat Robin Hayes, unless they truly expose his record to the citizens of the 8th disctrict in a large-scale manner. I love Larry Kissell. I love his spirit, his energy, and his hope. I just wish he'd fire back at the sleazeballs in the Hayes campaign, and let them know that they can't get away with cheap shots and lies, while running from their hideous record.

"We're not responsible"

That seems to be the talking point du jour of the Party of Greed and Torture these days. I'll bet Bill Clinton is the mean old person who sent that mailing!

Isn't this the party that in 1994 assured us they would be

the Adults? Here's a hint: To be an adult, you must take responsibility for your actions.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

the current Republican party

is akin to a group of over-sexed, high testosterone 20 year old frat boys.

The problem with Dems as a whole

They just roll over and take the beating, rather than refute it and expose the truth and the other candidate's lies.

Small wonder a lot of folks see the two parties as Republican and Republican Lite (minus the spine.)

It was Kerry's problem in 04, Gore's in 00, and probably factors into dozens of local races around the country. The Party is too bloody polite.

(sorry, I'm a bit cranky. Though I voted today!)

I can't say

That I disagree with you Diane. The true debate is how dirty a campaign truly wants to get...Do you play the higer ground, and only talk up positives? Or do you stoop down to your oponent, and hit them back with a taste of their own medicine???

I think we all know which rout national Dem's (Kerry, Gore, etc.) have taken the last coupld of cycles.

Larry is firing back

The problem is lack of money. The campaign does not have the money for slick mailers like Robin Hayes sends out. This campaign has been better financed than the previous two that ran against Hayes, and I've seen Larry's ads several times during morning and evening news times. We're calling and talking with people and walking and knocking on doors. Hopefully we'll engage enough folks in conversation to personally refute the lies. It isn't a willingness to fire back or fight back. It's a function of money.

The good news for anyone hoping for fiscal responsibility - there is no waste in this campaign. They are making full use of volunteers and are smart in their financial decisions. They are doing a tremendous amount with what they have.

Free Publicity

Larry was all over the Raleigh/Fayetteville news last night for his canvassing with Jim Hunt. It was a good two or three minute segment. I didn't get to hear it because I was out to eat with the kids between kindermusic sessions and the volume was off. Near as I can tell, they didn't show one image of Hayes.

Maybe you should call again.

Checked today's mail? There's another one promoting Hayes, who is apparently "keeping taxes low for families" even though he scored a perfect 0% on the Citizens for Tax Justice's 2006 Report Card (link - PDF file) and that he is "protecting our jobs" even though there's that whole "I am flat out, completely, horizontally opposed to CAFTA... but I cast the tie-breaking vote for it anyway" deal. Robin Hayes is such a good man.

not responsible???

That's about the biggest bullcrap I've ever heard. It says on every single one of those mailers in BIG letters: "Paid for AND AUTHORIZED by Hayes for Congress".
Yes, Larry is fighting back with whatever means He has.
There's much more coming in the next days, but I can't really say what. I'm sure those folks that "aren't responsible for anything" are reading this too.
If you want to see more ads from the Kissell campaign then please give a generous donation. At this point in the game all money goes directly to TV and Radio ads.
And remember, they might have the money but we sure have the people power!
