Last Friday, was a breaking point of sorts in my household. I've become accustomed to receiving mailers from Robin Hayes for the last couple weeks, and inspecting them before they went into the garbage.
Well, one of the TWO mailings I received that day was critical of Larry's stance on the war in Iraq. The mailer essentially was a big, block-lettered advertisement calling Larry Kissell a flip-flopper. This was the last straw. I couldn't resist staying quiet any longer. I picked up the phone book and turned to the H section.
After finding the Hayes office phone number, I starting dialing, half-expectiing for nobody to pick up. Five rings later a nice young man's voice came on the other end of the line. The man stated his name, and I stated that I had some questions, regarding the mailings the Hayes' camp is sending out. Here's what transpired:
Me: Yes sir, I've got a few questions bout these mailers you guys are sending out.
Staffer: Okay...I'll be glad to help, though, we're not directly responsible for those...
Me: Well, I'm just wonderin', on this latest mailer, you guys are accusing Larry Kissell of being a flip-flopper, right?
Me: Because, you know, I just find that a little odd considering the well-documented flip-flop by Congressman Hayes on the CAFTA front.
(to my shock...)
Staffer: Well, I guess you're right. You do have a point.
Me: It's pretty much a height of hypocrisy, huh?
Staffer: Well, I guess, what the mailer is saying is that Larry hasn't been consistent on Iraq.
Me: Well, Larry hasn't cast one vote in the United States Congress. Mr. Hayes, sure has voted, and we've all seen his monumental vote for CAFTA, plain as day, you know, the one he was absolutely, and horizontally opposed to?
Staffer: Again, we're not responsible for those mailers, but I can give you the number to call to talk to someone who may know a little more..
Me: Okay, well thanks for your time. I appreciate you talking to me.
To his credit, the staffer was as nice as he could be, and although he was likely being coy, he seemed a little weary about his faith in Robin Hayes.
Either way, nobody is EVER going to beat Robin Hayes, unless they truly expose his record to the citizens of the 8th disctrict in a large-scale manner. I love Larry Kissell. I love his spirit, his energy, and his hope. I just wish he'd fire back at the sleazeballs in the Hayes campaign, and let them know that they can't get away with cheap shots and lies, while running from their hideous record.
