Monday Morning Open Thread - 3/24

I'm tilling the earth today. I have a 1000 sq ft garden out back, which is quite large for me. Some veggies I'm trying to grow for the very first time. The writing side of blogging will have to wait just a tad longer while I finish my initial tilling today. In a couple of weeks I'll work the soil again and then - if I can wait - I'll put the plants into my garden that have been growing in my breakfast room for the past few weeks. This is my idea of therapy.

What's on your schedule for today?

Oh.....Way to go Davidson Wildcats! That was the most exciting game to watch. We were cheering for Davidson and jumping around the living room. I'm sure the dogs thought we'd gone berserk. They usually hide when we're watching the Heels play a tight game.

Congrats to the Heels too.

I've got a busy day ahead of me.

Tomorrow is our monthly Board of Directors meeting, so I have a lot of reports to finalize, and other things to prepare. It seems like the hurrieder I go, the further behind I get.

That always seems to be how it goes

When I get in a hurry I tend to forget things. They might not be urgent at the time, but they are by the time I remember them.

at the beach

I am in a kind of suspended animation here - keep thinking I need to talk to some voters but instead, I play a lot of mini golf with my son. Myrtle Beach is an interesting place to watch economic changes. There are some pricey condos now on the street where we stay, but I have noticed that we never have a wait in the restaurants, so I wonder if people are cutting back on some expenses. Of course, the free entertainment of the basketball playoffs could be part of it. My husband works at his computer every day here - our economy does not allow him to take much of a break - but we are glad to be able to have a change of scene for a week.

Sometimes a change of scenery is all I need

I don't really enjoy being completely out of touch or away from my normal life. I enjoy my life. I need a vacation from the laundry/cooking/cleaning. I'd love it if my husband would give me a vacation from that, but I don't need to leave home for it. Now that the girls are older they could even pitch in. (This is giving me an idea for this summer. :D )

Having lived in Myrtle Beach.

I can tell you that there are no waits in any restaurants until the summer kicks in, then you can prepare for 1.5 hours or more everywhere. We always invited my family down from PA in March and would hit Nascar cafe, the aquarium, all those things. Then, in the summer, we'd cook out and go to the deserted beaches.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

One thing I can't get used to out here in the country

are the drop-in visitors. Our home is almost always ready for guests b/c you never know when someone is going to wander in. It is taking a bit of getting used to. We're homebodies and we like our privacy. We're working on it, though.

just shoot them

Just shoot them when they show up unannounced - the word will get out

I would have to hose them down

as I do not yet own a gun. I imagine getting soaked with water would work just as well and I don't think I'd face jail time. :D

Now....on the animal front....Bambi's relatives don't bother me and neither do the little bunny and fox families that live in our woods. If they get through my garden fencing I might take on a different tone toward them. We might just have us some venison for din din. I better get good at bow hunting, eh?

The idea of Betsy...

...walking around the woods with a crossbow scares the crap out of Me. I think I'll stay inside for a while.

I actually can see that! Rob from the rich and give to the poor! Robin Muse!

I think I'll just chase them away and make sure my fencing is secure.

I lived in the "other" Orange County, or the OC in S. California

for many years, and really no one came over without having been invited or at least calling first. Not really any drop in's at all. It was a different world once I got to Guilford County, NC.
It took some serious getting used to. My wife (originally from Cary) would wonder why when someone knocked on the door that I just continued doing whatever it was I was doing and didn't jump up to answer the door. I explained to her that I didn't invite anyone over and no one called. She was quite perplexed and explained to me that perhaps someone needed help or some such thing.

Hmmmmm, I thought. I just figured it was the Mormons or Jehovah's witness'. I now answer the door. ;-)

Foxx out, Carter in.

This year there is a great Democratic candidate in the 5th that is poised to unseat Foxx. Roy Carter is working hard (and has been for 7 months) to unseat her. We have to remember that not only do we have the power to change the direction of our country with our votes, but we also have the power to change the way Democrats WIN elections. It's important to support them with our time, energy and wallet. DONATE HERE to help kick Foxxxx OUT.

It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task. RFK

Duke Power Grab

I didn't want to hijack Jim Neal's thread of the same name, but dang if "Duke power grab" doesn't sound like some new move coach Kry came up with to get away with fouling or drawing a charge...

Scholarship from Veterans Affairs

An acquaintance of mine was unable to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq because Veterans Affairs lead him to believe that if he participated in a public event he would lose his scholarship.

Those nuclear bomb emergency pills

I need help.
I keep imagining that all of my precinct leaders are going to file change of registration forms when Edwards endorses Mrs Clinton. and I have a pile of registration forms in my den.
When I was a little tyke, I heard stories about special pills people gave out when the nuclear bomb went off.
I heard that Edwards is going to make an announcement tomorrow in Greensboro. Gulp. why? because we can not take the Trinity UU Church pastor's harsh words? Timing is bad.

Are you serious?

Potassium Iodide

It's Potassium Iodide. Here's some information from the NC Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response about the Potassium Iodide (KI) Program

Following a June 2003 offer by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to supply potassium iodide tablets free of charge to states for people in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zones (EPZs) around nuclear facilities, North Carolina Public Health, Emergency Management and Radiation Protection officials requested and obtained approximately 750,000 tablets from the NRC. The KI pills were designated for distribution to residents and workers in the 10-mile EPZs of the four nuclear power plants located in or adjacent to North Carolina.

Here's something that's less than reassuring: Progress Energy has a page called Frequently Asked Questions about Harris Nuclear Plant

If you have two reactors at Harris, will you have to distribute twice as much Potassium Iodide (KI)?

No. Potassium iodide (KI) is provided to residents of the 10-mile area around the Harris Plant by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and distributed by local county health departments. KI blocks the absorption of radiation by the thyroid. In the unlikely event of a release of radiation, local residents might be instructed to take KI pills. KI pills come in 130-milligram tablets, a dosage determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For more information, visit the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services online at

Try clicking on that link. Now you're worried. The correct link is for the Potassium Iodide program.

Rumor but possible abt Edwards

Hi-- my source is trying to get some verification. It came from a pretty knowledgeable source but perhaps it is just a falsehood.

And yet lets be hopeful that the Obama rally would not be where or when Edwards would endorse Hillary. Pls--the Party can not be that dysfunctional. I just wish we could have a great deal of dignity in this process. Keep our word respect one another ...stuff like that.

I do keep hearing that folks are not going to be happy if the superdelegates go against the real primary counts.

maybe it is a false rumor about edwards endorsement

It is Wednesday and I have not recd confirmation. I apologize for sharing my despair. I really am like apparently everyone else in the Blue Party, we want a dignified primary season. where we present the positive alternative to mCbush

You know, if our two candidates can settle down

we will still present a positive alternative to McBush. While I am a definite Obama supporter at this point, I still believe that Senator Clinton would be a far better choice than Senator McCain. Far, far better.

I've been very disappointed in the tone the campaign has taken, and from my perspective, the negatives seem to be coming from the Clinton campaign, but my perspective is admittedly skewed. It's probably going both ways. They need to quit that right now.

As for Edwards, I read somewhere - here? - that he said he wasn't going to endorse until Carolina had finished playing basketball. So - that will be a while, yes? :-)

I love your optimism

I would like to get beyond Thursday's game.

I would rather Edwards not endorse at all. That's just my preference.

I'm with you on that Betsy....

It would seem like a surrender of some of his principles to ally himself with either candidate. Plus, we don't know what else might be coming out of the closet in the future. I also do my own veggie garden, trying different veggie varieties each season. So far, there seems to be more moisture and maybe a bigger reward for all your efforts at the end of the season.

Ooo...PM me and let me know what you're planting this year

I got lucky. It looks like our back field was on a part of the farm where there had been plenty of manure. :D The soil is preeeety rich so far and the clay that is in the front isn't evident in the back.
