Military Madness 3/06

My father was a US Navy hospital corpsman for 23 years. He took a bullet in the back in Korea, recovered physically, and eventually took another bullet by his own hand after years of depression. He was a proud sailor and strong proponent of national defense.

He would be pissed as hell to see Republican politicians using men in uniform as window-dressing for their political and fundraising events as shown in the picture with this article.

Josh Marshall covers the story here . . . and points out that the offensive winger practice is not just bad taste - it's also illegal.

To any North Carolina military types reading this, how do you like being used as props for Republican politicians? That's what the right wing thinks of you . . . props at best, pawns at worst.

My grandfather was also in Korea

and was called to active duty in Naval Intelligence (you would have to know my grandfather to know just how hilarious this was) in the first Gulf war. (Marines in Korea and then Navy Reserves??? I think is how it went) He was proud to wear his uniform, but I think he would be very angry to see our military men and women used as props. He was a black/white rules kinda guy.

All it's going to take is to have one soldier/sailor/marine/airman courtmartialed for appearing in uniform and it will backfire on the Republicans. There will be no punishment for the public official and their pawn will end up in deep trouble. I think that other than expressing our dismay at our troops being used in this way we need to let the military take care of this. Otherwise, we look like WE are the ones getting them in trouble. I'm not making much sense, am I? I know what I'm trying to say...just not doing a good job of saying it this morning. Need more coffee.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

They do need to handle it.

You're right. Remember, lib'ruls hate the military and don't respect our men and women in uniform. I'll just go ahead and admit that if I took up this message, I would be begging someone to point out that I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. That's why I'm glad to hear it from Anglico (and others with a military background). The military has been so effectively divorced from progressive America that any progressive commentary also has to be bridge-building if it's going to be taken seriously.

Hm. Coffee...
