Live Blog The BlueNC Barbecue Bash

We need help planning the first ever BlueNC "dinner" ... tentatively called The BlueNC Bloggers Barbecue Bash.

This topic came up in the Vance-Aycock Dinner renaming discussion, and I jumped on it. This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. A real-life political get-together of the extended BlueNC community: bloggers, lurkers, guests, media, friends, family, you name it.

I'm happy to host the event here in Chapel Hill. I'll also arrange the catering (barbecue, of course) and some live music. But I'd really like some help making it happen. For example, we'll need to choose a good date where attendance will be high and it won't rain. We'll want to extend invitations, especially to candidates, other bloggers and media. We'll need staffing for the gate to collect money (I'm thinking $10 per person, free for kids). And all the other stuff.

Who wants to take charge? Who can help?

James

PS This would also be a very good time to get our BlueNC business card act together. I know I've been promising to do it forever, but I'm not a graphic designer and all my designer friends are sick of me asking them to help. Maybe someone could take charge of that project too? We've agreed to pay for 50-100 personalized cards for anyone who wants them.

Don't worry! I have made arrangements with the Fred Smith campaign. They are willing to supply Fred's BBQ Bus along with 6000 BBQ dinners at your event. I told them it was a birthday party for a retired Vet who was into the Governor race....who hasn't made a decision on whom to support.....I also told them to dropped the Bus and dinners at the RDT airport and a person name Jesus would pick up the dinners and Bus and returned the Bus the following week after touring Senior Citizens around the Durham Churches....

I'd like to help,

put me on the volunteer list. How about the 5th of July? It's a Saturday and more people could attend, (also warm swimming weather).

As far as Business cards, why not just the BlueNC banner at the top and people can put their online name and real name on it with their contact info. That's what I used for the name tags and it is instantly recognized.

Oh no you didn't put that picture up!

You'll have to be sure to bring that much autographed sign.

July 5 is my birthday!

I'm always up for a party. But I may not be in town.

We usually go out of town that weekend

I really think pre-primary is more useful. We know who we'll vote for in the general. This is a chance for the candidates to come out and give it one last shot. Maybe we can webcast the speeches....if'n we let the candidates make speeches.

I vote for April

Maybe mid-April - before the Primaries but close enough to them that the excitement will be coming to a peak.

I'll bring the mountain contingent!

Don't forget the vegetarians!

Not Memorial Day weekend, not mid-June (going to Japan for 2 weeks! woohoo!). But yeah, chilling with folks sounds awesome, as long as there's food I can eat.

Amen, sister.

I'll most def throw in on some veg cuisine.

Memorial Weekend is out for us too

we go on a long weekend camping trip staying with friends in Erwin, TN.

Connie, where will you be going in Japan. My son will be living there by then (in Osaka)and probably married. We hope to be able to attend.

A few places

Kyoto for a few days, a day trip to Osaka Castle, Nara, then the rest of the time in Tokyo getting our geek on. The in-laws paid for our plane tickets and are paying for hotels the time we're together (Kyoto and Nara), since it's Family Vacation Time. Then MIL has a biology conference to go to.

The current plan is to get to Kyoto on 6/15, stay there through the 19th, with day trips to Fushimi/Uji and Osaka, then Nara the 20th, then Tokyo the 21st - 27th.

color me green with envy

The son has been to Japan 3 or 4 times and has slews of pics. Last year his fiance' Akiko sent me a pop-up Christmas Card that had a bunch of little santas all over Osaka Castle.

It's my first trip to JP

Some of my friends have been a few times, and I'm pretty excited.

Though I hear Christmas in Japan can be pretty weird.

From what Akiko tells me

they love American Christmas....the glitz, the lights all the shiny stuff. Although she's a Budist, she loves everything about our Christmas...except celebrating Christ's birthday.

She was here for Christmas in 2006 and took pictures of everything. Starting with my dining room table covered with wrapping paper and ribbons to each dish we served for Christmas dinner. She sent me a picture of her Christmas tree, it was one of those pink aluminum trees about 3 foot high.

I have a good friend there.

There is a family that used to live in Chapel Hill for a few years, and I wish I could go there to see them.Lucky you!

If "getting your geek" on means

hunting for techno gadgets I would advise going to the Akihabara section of Tokyo; It's an electronic wonderland.

You wouldn't happen to need a semicompetant translator/guide would you? (j/k)

Nihon wa hisashiburi desu. (It's been a while since I've been to Japan.) And I miss it.

Say hello to the deer in Nara. (and watch where you step)

I actively oppose gerrymandering. Do you?

Akiba's on the list ^_^

We'll be hitting up all the otaku shops in Ikebukuro and checking out the fashion victims in Harajuku. Ever hear of the manga Genshiken? I'm Ohno and my husband is Kohsaka.

(And shouldn't that be nihon de iru no wa hisashiburi desu? My nihongo skillz aren't as leet as they used to be, and I can't read worth a damn, but grammar... grammar is my friend.)

Sanford-Bowles Dinner

Since we're starting from scratch...

I'll bring the lawn sports

Bocce, horseshoes, croquet, frisbee...

Leisure sports, bloggers, and politics? Throw in a couple of cold beers and we've got a fair chunk of my favorite things.

Scrutiny Hooligans - http://www.scrutinyhooligans.us

Better stick to Nerf Sports

By June, this crew is liable to be chucking lawn darts at each other.

Can I bring

REAL Brunswick Stew ... made with squirrel?

Sincerely,
Mike Huckabee

Ok ... seriously ... I have flunked out of several Social Director/Party Planning Schools so somebody just tell me what to buy/make and bring and I'll buy/make or bring it.

I choose to be inspired.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

i have a squirrel for you, Leslie!

I can bring vegetarian(plus banana bread) but we have a squirrel that is eating/nesting in our porch roof. My husband got a sonar device in the mail today that is so loud it may evict our son!

Put me on the volunteer list, and junior baker(my son) as well. Anytime in the summer except for Netroots Nation is okay by me. April is okay except my husband can't be there the weekend of the 17th(running the Boston Marathon).

name for the dinner

This probably sounds dumb, but I was looking at the name BlueNC Bloggers Barbecue Bash and thought, "Blue B cubed..." so maybe the "Blue B Cube Dinner"?

Okay, goofy, but I liked the way "Blue B Cube" sounded like "barbecue". That sonar device we used on the squirrel is hurting my brain, I guess.

Blue B Cube

Cute. Makes me think of tofu for some reason.

:)

I would be willing to help out

collecting money, serving 'q', whatever. I'm looking forward to meeting y'all.

Pre primary would be best, in my opinion.

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

I would hope that this event be timed for the lull

in between the primary and the general. I'll be slam busy in the weeks prior to the primary with our own local events.
Perhaps something in concert with the convention? Or one of the early debates in the fall? Proclaim July 4 Independance from Bush Day and do something near the 4th so as not to conflict with family plans?

Can't do the 4th

There is a lot going on

Some other conflicts to consider--April 19th, county conventions; May 17th, district conventions; June 21-22, state convention, state exec.

Too bad there isn't a blue moon this summer....
