Knoxville

Speaking of card-carrying liberals, I was recently pondering the idea of having a t-shirt made up that combined a bullseye with an identification of the wearer as a liberal. I don't have the creative skills to come up with and illustrate the design (though I know that plenty of YOU guys do) but I do have the stones to wear it.

Quoting with permission from Pamela Troy's personal blog -

How could it have happened?

"Liberalism is, in essence, the HIV virus, and it weakens the defense cells of a nation." -- Michael Savage 7/11/2006

"We need to execute people like John Walker [Lindh] in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors." — Ann Coulter, speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference, January 2002

"We do detest you, we despise you and we hold you in complete and utter contempt…The day will come, the day will come when unpleasant things are going to happen to a bunch of stupid liberals, it’s going to be amusing to watch, very amusing to watch." -- Lee Rodgers, on liberals, KSFO radio, 6/30/06

"If guns are outlawed, how can we shoot the liberals?" -- State Sen. Mike Gunn (R-MS), quoted in the Atlanta Journal -Constitution, 12/31/96

Can any of you imagine the reaction had so-called "liberal" commentators made cute jokes like these?

Comments

Maddening

The amount of hate and violence tacitly condoned by the reactionary right is breathtaking. They are the sources of assassinations here in America and worldwide. In the name of protecting families and personal greed they advocate and engage in open and hostile discrimination against minorities (ethnic and otherwise) and push for laws that are patently discriminatory.

Here in North Carolina, one of the leading sources of anti-liberal zeal is the North Carolina Family Policy Council, which advocates:

against equal rights for gay people
against legislation that would help reduce bullying of gays in public schools
for the dangerous delusion of abstinence only education

More to come ... when I'm not so angry.

How about

Taken from the Charlotte Observer:

Have you ever heard of a liberal shooting up a church?

Wake Forest won't play us anymore
Michigan last year
LSU - you are next
Go ASU!

B-b-but

They're protecting families when they shoot up churches. It's okay with god. Just ask them.

Yeah.

Just like they're protecting families when they murder doctors performing legal medical procedures. Right.

They're killers. Murderers. Shooting up churches, medical clinics, etc., because of the supposed politics of the people who are inside of those places is a crime of cowardice. The criminal is afraid to engage in direct discourse and conversation, because he's afraid he won't be able to "win". Ergo, the violence and crime. It's disgusting.

In 2007, Digby, who writes at the blog Hullabaloo

predicted the following and it made me think of the UU shootings in Knoxville:

I predict that we are going to see a remarkable resurgence of rightwing violence if the Democrats take full control of the government. These people are always surprisingly cooperative when the government is run by Republicans and then rediscover their "anti-government" beliefs when Democrats share or dominate the government. I can't imagine why that would be.

Because of this, I belive that any group of people who puts party affiliations before our country, it would be the right-wing hate mongers like O'Reilly, Savage, and Hannity. They are the anti-patriots and are the traitors to everything our founding fathers fought for.

Unfortunately, just with the perception that the Democrats will be taking over the U.S. government in 2009, Digby's words are already ringing true.

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

'K folks C'mon . . .

I know someone out there knows how to put a graphic together for a t-shirt that combines a bull's-eye with a phrase that describes the wearer as a liberal.

Show me a design, I'll print at least ONE, and wear it proudly (so long as everyone promises not to say, "HEY! That's that BEEOTCH from BLUENC," 'cause I think that might draw what we'd otherwise call "friendly fire."

yrs
Bru'

Make that two

I'll wear it.

Be sure you get all those quotes on the back.

What Betsy said

Yup -- do the red, white and blue -- but also add another ring or two to make it look more like a bullseye. Maybe actually find a little bullseye on some graphic -- AND the word should be singular "liberal," rather than liberals. Makes the wearer more obviously the target.

Now I gotta find somebody to print one up.

Shortly following Dan Quayle's infamous spelling fiasco (potatoE), I had one printed that said
"George must go. Dan must goe."

I thought it was hilarious but got sort of chewed out by a grocery clerk who didn't think it was one BIT funny.

Maybe she'd like this one better.

Bru' (gonna get herself shot one of these days)

Excellent ~

But I'm still gonna make the word "liberal" singular.

And I might get really fancy (haven't figured the cost of this lil' project yet) by including more of the quotes, and a cut-and-paste headline from the Knoxville Sentinel on the day following the shooting.

Singular

Yeah, "liberal" really needs to be singular so that the shirt is interpreted as identifying the wearer, not making a sympathetic statement to the sentiment that everyone to the left of Francisco Franco should be gunned down.
