Kissell needs some help...

What planet is Larry from? From his latest email:

Four years ago today, this Administration rightfully declared 'Mission Accomplished' in Iraq acknowledging the fine work of the greatest military force the world has ever seen. Our brave troops denied weapons of mass destruction to the terrorists, deposed a military dictator and oversaw a democratically elected government.

Rightfully declared? That has to be the worst Democratic framing this side of the CFL party.

I supported Kissell in '06 (even though I'm not in NC-08), but I'm suddenly not so sure I'll be sending him any money in '08.

Comments

Incredibly bad wording

I suspect that Larry (or his staff) felt as Marshalle Adam did (and wrote today) that the mission that was accomplished was getting Saddam out of power. (I'm not saying I agree with that - just speculating on a possible explanation.)

Got the same email

I was a little bothered with the assertion that there were WMD's....who's writing these for Larry? I still think he's the right man for the NC08....just a little problem with wording.

wording was a little different last cycle

I gather what he means is that had Al Qaeda gone unchecked, WMD might have been developed. Hence, we denied terrorists WMD - not we found them and destroyed them. We never allowed them the opportunity to get their hands on them.

Framing isn't great, but I'm not going to go get all dramatic about it like the rest of you nuts. :)......the smiley face means I'm kidding.

Honestly, it's refreshing to see a Democrat framing the military's efforts as successful. We did what we went to do. We leave on our terms, not the phony terms set up by Republicans.

What planet is Larry from?

It's called the 8th District. Welcome.

The one paragraph you cite (out of context and ignoring several others calling for the troops to come home) is called a Republican talking point checkmate.

Even though YOU may want to say Larry's constituents in the 82nd Airborne lost the Iraq War, Larry is apparently the only Democrat in America that sees they already won, a long, long time ago, and deserve to come home with heads held high.

The only "surrender date" a Republican can come back to Larry on is the failed occupation that ensued after all our missions were accomplished.

Seriously, if you know anything about Larry, you know he's not running for Congress, at great expense to his family mind you, to regurgitate someone else's talking points. He has former students in Iraq. And he's proud of them as he should be. Please think about this district. I know Larry represents it whether he represents every single activist's 'framing' or not.

But please, please, please follow your heart. If you disagree with Larry that the troops should come home victorious, send Hayes money.

Here ya go. War forever.

Or we won already!

Your choice Friend.

Our military

was trained to destroy all military forces in its way. And it did a fantastic job of doing so. It was not trained to build schools and perform police actions.

Every failure in this war has been a failure of political leadership. Our men and women in uniform have done everything they have been asked as well as they are capable of given the available training and equipment.

Im poor, and Larry's campaign owes me money. But im sending him 5 bucks because of this.

Out of context...

my ass! It's the frigging lede!

It was and is terrible framing and ties Kissell to the "Mission Accomplished" banner, which even the Bush Maladministration has disavowed.

Assuming Kissell didn't write this himself, the author ought to be looking for a new line of work.

Darryl that is the same framing Larry used last cycle

It's also the same framing other Democrats are taking now to combat the "defeat and retreat" rhetoric coming from the right.

The only thing different about the framing that I noticed is the comment about keeping wmd out of the hands of terrorists. The rest is the same. Larry always said we accomplished what we were sent to do. It was clearly written on his web site.

Planet Larry

Planet Larry is where the folks of the 8th district reside and we know that what is happening isn't a military failure. It is a diplomatic and command failure. Have we all become so cynical that we can't remember that our military went in prepared to deal with wmds? Thank God Bush was a lying sob and they didn't have to intercept them. That doesn't take away from the fact that our military acted with professionalism and honor in the way they carried out the real mission they were sent in to accomplish. I agree. Mission accomplished--stop the politics, stop the lies, stop wasting American lives, and let's Democrats stop pissing in the tent and aim for outside.

Please forgive me Rant

I did read the whole thing, but was bothered by the WMD thing. As I said above, I still think Larry is the right man for the 8th, but I had trouble with the wording. I have contributed to his campaign in the past and will in the future. Anything I can do I will to help get him elected. Sorry, but when I first read it I just got the feeling that it was validating the shrub's WMD claim.

I'm not the brightest bulb in this pack, maybe I should have just stayed out of it and let the brighter ones shine here. Lesson learned: wait and learn

the wording was a tad awkward, but I understand the sentiment behind them.

I guess I'm a dim bulb, too, Mo

I took it the way you did. The folks who didn't are the ones who have had more face time and worked very very closely with the campaign last cycle. Maybe that's why. Perhaps that should be taken into consideration by the campaign - it's not reading well by those that don't know you very well.

BlueNC keeps deleting my comments and kicking me off

the WMD thing is the only bothersome in that letter. Which I didn't get. I like to see the cherry trees before I see the cherries picked.

But this is no reason to join Team Kouri or Team Autry or whatever other team is jumping into the race. Our soldiers rock, and they did a great job winning the initial conflict. But there were no WMDs.

Here's the whole thing Sam

and anyone else that didn't get the email

Friends,
"I issued a challenge in 2005, again in 2006 and now on the fourth anniversary of the President declaring the 'Mission Accomplished' 42 days after it began, I issue it again. We staged our way into Iraq in one year, there is no reason we can't stage our way out in one year. - Larry Kissell

...

Sadly, rather than welcoming our victorious troops home from the battlefield as heroes, this administration has them sitting in a civil war of quarreling factions, when they should be standing ready here at home for the next threat.

When it comes to funding, I don't believe there's a debate to be had on our commitments. There is no 'political compromise' on personnel costs, equipment maintenance or health care for our soldiers. But there's also no legitimate debate on when to end a war you've already won, especially with greater threats on the horizon.

Like a lot of people in the 8th District with friends, family and neighbors serving in Iraq, I believe we should fund the troops AND start bringing them home, a process that should have begun years ago. I issued a challenge in 2005, again in 2006 and now on the fourth anniversary of the President declaring the 'Mission Accomplished' 42 days after it began, I issue it again. We staged our way into Iraq in one year, there is no reason we can't stage our way out in one year.

...

Please join our campaign for common sense today. Your generous contribution is appreciated.

I'll be adding a little extra to his coffers tonight, hope you will too.

I'm sure it's just a glitch Sam

I bet if you let his campaign know, they will re-add you to the list. There is no way Larry has fallen out of love with you! You worked too hard for him.

You know, I probably got the email

because I have given money to support Larry Kissell in both election cycles - even though I don't live in the 8th district. I will continue to support him with whatever meager donations I can - until there is a viable candidate in the 6th district. Then all bets are off. :)

The email was extremely poorly written, because apparently it didn't really mean what it said. If he meant

I gather what he means is that had Al Qaeda gone unchecked, WMD might have been developed. Hence, we denied terrorists WMD - not we found them and destroyed them. We never allowed them the opportunity to get their hands on them.

, that's probably what should have been written. It did read more like republican talking points - at least to me. I'm not questioning Larry's fitness for Congress, or his ability to represent the 8th District.

I agree with everyone who has stated that any failure in Iraq should not be laid at the feet of our military. They deserve all the support and honor we can give them. By aligning himself with Bush's tragic "Mission Accomplished" announcement made on May 1, 2003, I think Mr. Kissell may well have hurt himself. Even hard-core republicans don't want to get next to that. Rewording of the message is definitely in order there.

That's a point, I suppose.

I can't get past the photo op president, who tonight had nothing better to do than appear in a publicity appearance for American Idol Gives Back as what I consider one of the grimmest anniversaries in our history passed, unremarked on by him. I hate to see one of the good guys (Larry) standing so close to that. I just don't want him to be splashed by that poison, and I think he was accidentally put close to it today.

For four years now....

My dad has said we should "declare victory" and come home. I think that this is the tactic that people are adopting. As someone else suggested tonight, they did thier job, but that doesn't include rebuilding a country. I mean the French didn't stay and help us. (Btw, I just love reminding righties that we wouldn't be a country if it weren't for the Frenchies and that the British should be our natural enemy, not ally, but then at the end of the day Hamilton won and Jefferson lost)
