John Edwards to step up for Larry Kissell - Updated

It is official! The campaign has made the announcement. John Edwards plans to step up and help Larry win in November. Details haven't been released, so stay tuned for more information. There are so many things going on. Here's a rundown in case you missed anything.

Larry Kissell won the DCCC's "Action for a New Direction" competition. Here's a little more information to give you an idea of just how organized and mobilized Kissell volunteers are.

On Saturday, September 9th, over 25 of our most competitive congressional campaigns participated in "Action for a New Direction," a national volunteer mobilization day. One thing was clear -- Democrats across the country are ready for change and are ready to hit the streets to make a difference in this election.

In total, some 4,000 "Action for a New Direction" volunteers knocked on nearly 50,000 doors, made over 25,000 calls, identified thousands of supporters, registered hundreds of new voters, wrote thousands of neighbor-to-neighbor postcards, and put up thousands of yard signs. With a total of 863 volunteers knocking on 11,646 doors, Larry Kissell's campaign in North Carolina's 8th district turned out the most "Action for a New Direction" volunteers!

"Congratulations to Larry Kissell, his staff and his volunteers!" said Karin Johanson, DCCC Executive Director.
The prize? A fundraising letter for Larry Kissell from DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel is on the way to the national database.

That's right. The Kissell campaign was responsible for mobilizing almost one fourth of all volunteers out of more than 25 campaigns competing. Amazing. I promised when I started promoting this campaign on DKos that they would make good use of your donations. The campaign staff and campaign volunteers are working hard to make your donations stretch further.

Also, national database! Do you know how big the National database is? Huge....HUGE. With two weeks before the end of the quarter, this could make a big difference for Larry. Don't wait for Rahm's letter or email, though. Please visit ActBlue today and contribute to Larry. Every little bit helps.

Another bit of information that you might not have seen is that Larry Kissell was added to a new list of "emerging races" with the DCCC. The red-to-blue list has over 30 names on it and most are candidates who have had no trouble raising their own money. Larry's recognition has been completely based on good, old-fashioned, grassroots campaigning. This recognition should also help bring donations Larry's way. Way to go Larry and staff!

The Kissell Campaign also has released a great site, HelpLarry.com where you can enter your personal information and receive a list of 8th District voters to contact. You also print off a script. It's a wonderful idea and thousands of lists have already been printed. Get your list today. Make 10 calls. Then make 10 more.

On top of all of this, Larry has been featured in almost every single paper in the district. There is only one that has failed to acknowledge this race and that is one of the two papers in Concord - Robin Hayes' base. The Richmond County paper editorial board referred to Hayes as Judas Iscariot. The Charlotte Observer has run a front page, "A" section, above the fold piece on Larry's involvement with the Netroots and his use of emerging technology. The piece quoted Hayes as saying he knew blogs were something to do with the internet. What a buffoon. Many of the articles have been about how Kissell has simply put his feet to the pavement and is knocking on doors. He is relentless. Rain or shine.

Last, but not least, we have some endorsement news. Citizens Trade PAC, the fair trade coalition of labor, environmental, family farm and consumer groups and the Sierra Club, a 750,000 member organization working to promote smart energy solutions, safe and healthy communities and protection of America's wild legacy have endorsed Larry Kissell. The North Carolina AFL-CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators and the Veterans Alliance for Security and Democracy (VETPAC) endorsed Larry's candidacy earlier this year.

Don't forget to give 'till it feels good.

Mo

This is what we call MO-mentum and it's clear Larry's on a roll. Good news all around.

Now we just need to be prepared to Strike Back when Hayes starts his lyin' ways. Is there an organized "STRIKE BACK" organization in place? We ought to be able to mobilize several hundred LTE's in short order, not to mention a deluge of email responses and phone calls to Friends of Flipper.

Working on that

I've been working behind the scenes to get an LTE team in place. One reason I have not been writing as much is b/c I've been researching....FEC, LexisNexis, Thomas House vote database, etc. You know how I love research. That sumbitch isn't going to get away with sheet this election. *grin*

kismet

We have an LTE tool here but I need to make sure all of the 8th District publications are included. There may be some weeklies left out. It's on our Quick Links to the left.

Keep us posted on the Edwards event.

It's hard to believe this all started here.

Man, I must have been totally asleep at the switch last Friday, because I missed the announcement that Larry Kissell of Biscoe will be running for Robin Hayes's seat in Congress. Maybe I missed it because I have no idea who Larry Kissell is. In fact, I'm surprised to learn that there's a Biscoe, NC (population 1,700). But not only do I now know who Kissell is, I think I may kind of like him.

Wait...wait...

Does that email really say that out of 4000 volunteers nationwide, 863 of them turned out for the Kissell campaign?

Out of 450+ congressional districts nationwide....22% of all those volunteers turned out in the little 'ol 8th District?

Sweet Jesus on a pogo stick! That's unbelievable!!

Robin Hayes Hates Puppies

I think there were only 25 CDs competing for the prize

Still.....to have almost 1/4 volunteering for Larry. Wow.

Yup...yer right!

863 for Larry is unbelievable....even with "only" 25 districts competing, the avg # of volunteers should have been around 160 per district but we pulled in more than 5x that number.

Kissell volunteers RULE!

I will post tomorrow.

Larry has been so busy and there have been so many articles, that I haven't been able to keep up with them all.(This is not a bad thing) There are a few more things I want to add and I will post this on Kos and MyDD tomorrow. I'll be shooting for 10am.

Oh, YES!

I am so there and plan to vlog that event!

I'd love to meet more BlueNC bloggers there and do some more interviews. Thanks again, Screwy for the Shuler event interview. I'll post more about this after more details on the event are released.

Don't forget the gotv

There is an old saying vote earlier-vote often. This can now be done with the earlier voting. Haul some people to the polls and get everyone else to haul. Time to line them up and vote them. Go Larry

Absolutely, Surveyor

Next time you go to church folks check with the "shut ins" as my grandmother always called them. Offer them rides to the early voting locations when they open or offer to help them request an absentee ballot.

Philgoblue....tried to hunt you down

I wanted to invite you to the Crashing the States blogger meeting here in Charlotte. For some reason I don't gather you live in NC. Glad to see you stopping by. I haven't decided whether to be obnoxious with my cameras and other various equipment or to just go and enjoy. I'll have some pictures, I'm sure and might do some video. I don't think I'll get the video up on the web, though. It will just be for sharing with friends. I bet Amy will take care of the web part. My girls love John Edwards, so I'll probably take them.

Southern Dem,
Yea, I don't live in NC. I'm in Grand Rapids, Michigan (another state that's falled victim to "free"-trade). I'm just a huge supporter of Edwards and that brought me to BlueNC and I've been really impressed with the site. I have some hopes of setting up a state-blog myself some day. Plus I was so won over by everyone's passion for Kissell that I headed to the website, realized he was my kind of Democrat, and shot him a small donation (to which he replied with a signed letter to my shock).

I know Amy pretty well from OAC and think the world of her. I believe she is planning on reporting (hopefully with video) on the upcoming Edwards-Kissell event. She has my email if you do want to contact me in the future.

And yes, my girls, now 3 and 6 still see JRE and say "there's daddy's man."

Oh, and actually we have very good friends in Asheville and my parents actually winter in New Bern (so I'm in NC about once a year or everyother year).

State blogs take more time than money

at least, at first they do. I love what BlueNC is becoming. Last December I thought the site would be in great shape for 2008. I had no idea it would be in great shape for 2006. Let us know when you start your site and we'll come help drum up some blog posts and comments

I've said this over and over

when I got here it already felt like an established blog because Lance, Targator, Anglico, and SD worked so hard to keep the content fresh. Even after I joined it seemed like for awhile it was just the five of us posting. Now we're up in the mid-500s for registered users. Unbelievable. It is actually getting hard to keep up with all the content for the first time!

:) oh, happy DAY!!

I can feel the spirit moving! You guys -- damn -- y'all are amazing.

If a man is known by the company he keeps and a politician by the people who support him, Larry Kissell is off the charts and still moving up. Awesome stuff.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Isn't it fun, Leslie?

Ya'll keep good thoughts in your collective haids.....The first debate is in Kannapolis today. Big Hayes country and also sight of the biggest layoff in the 8th district when Pillowtex closed its doors in 2003. Pillowtex was previously owned by Robin Hayes family and is one of the reasons Hayes is worth over 55 million dollars.

I think NCDem Amy will be doing that

I have my video camera, but not the hardware on my computer to transfer to the editing software. I think that will have to wait until after November. I don't have time to deal with it, but when I do we can upload the video as an archive. I also have the Kissell fundraiser in Raleigh and a little bit of awful video from the gas event. I did a horrible job.

Debate on TV

From what I gather this debate is being taped for the local access cable channel 22 which is on Time Warner cable in Cabarrus County. It won't be aired outside our County. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. However, the Kissell campaign is thinking about putting it on youtube.

JE <3 LK?

they are so much alike, with almost the same background, it's a perfect match.

Must be a lot of activity at Kos, I can't get in!

As usual SD, Great Post!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Very exciting indeed!

Thanks yet again for keeping us all updated SouthernDem. You're working wonders for this campaign.

Two things:

SouthernDem, as you may know, I live in Concord. Driving to work on Monday, I got a pleasant surprise. Passing the Lowes Motor Speedway, I must have seen about 20 Kissell for Congress signs scattered overe over 3 mile radius. On my ride home that day, however, I noticed that every single sign was gone. I was just wondering if you knew anything about this? If it was a concerted effort by someone over at Camp Hayes to remove every sign, or a way to conserve Kissell signs by placing them at high traffic areas during specific times??? You know anything about this?

LiberalNC - you're in Concord, eh? Good to have a fellow Kissell supporter in the heart Of Hayes' hometown. I'll hopefully meet you at some type of gathering in the near future.

"If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind."-Kurt Vonnegut

Some of the signs may have been removed by

road crews. A lot of signs from all candidates are too close to the road. I don't know what Cabarrus Co's ordinance is, but Meck Co requires a sign be 11 feet from the road. City crews will take them down. I'll keep an eye out. There's one at the intersection of Mallard Creek and Hwy 29. I'll watch it. It's been ther ea few days now.

I wouldn't accuse the Hayes camp of playing dirty (and illegal) like that. Sometimes it's just pranksters and has nothing to do with politics. I would accuse Robin Hayes of a lot of things - lying to his constituents, cheating them out of their jobs and stealing their futures.....but I wouldn't accuse him of orchestrating a campaign sign theft ring.

At least, not yet.

those signs were removed by us.

One of your volunteers put those signs up over the weekend because of the big auto fair event going on at the speedway. We removed most of them again after the auto fair to use them at other events.
We now have bigger and better yard signs (plastic with wireframe) and you'll see a lot of them pop up over the next week or so.
By the way, you can find me hard at work every single day until the election in our local Concord headquarters.
Please drop by anytime!
Let me assure you there are a lot of Kissell supporters in Concord. We are so busy these days making sure we get the vote out that we don't have time to post much online. So just because you don't see a lot of us online doesn't mean we're not doing anything :-)

Now you know.....

You certainly can't be doing anything if you aren't online. This is where the action is....;)
