I just bought an electric lawnmower.

Does that make me an environmentalist?

I used it today for the first time, and it was quite easy. Starts up like a dream and is much quieter than the gas-powered push mower i had for 20 years. The cord is a bit of a nuisance, but once I get used to it, I'm sure it'll get easier.

Odd. I did some shopping for an electric today.

I am hoping for a cordless version. The ultimate idea is to run the mower's charger off a battery pack that is itself recharged by the four solar panels I have. Not sure if I have enough juice to pull it off.

If I do, then I could use the sun's energy to solve the problem caused by the sun's energy - the ever growing suburban grass. (Now there's a bit genetic engineering I wouldn't mind seeing.)

I actually think traditional yards are kinda stupid, unnatural, wholely artificial, environmentally damaging, human constructs, but atm I am stuck in suburbia.

I would love to let our whole yard go natural

but as I'm just shy of 5 ft tall, I'd have a hard time finding my way from the driveway to the door.

Seriously - We did let about 1/3 of the yard go "back to nature" - it's mostly pinestraw anyway, so why rake up the pinestraw, to let the grass grow, to cut the grass, to rake the pinestraw...just didn't make sense.

Our front and back lawn are fairly slow growing grasses, I have no idea what they are. But when the county put in water lines (the first ones ever) in our neighborhood, they planted a grass that grows so fast, so that our "easement" - you know, the part between our hedge and the street - seems to grow about 3 inches a day. I'm about to call the county and tell them they need to come cut their grass!

Good for you!! More people should follow your example.

Before I cut my yard for the first time this year (just this weekend) I had birds all over the place hunting for grub in the admittedly too tall grass.

At my previous abode I put in centipede grass in various location around the yard. It grows only about 6 months a year, grows low (mostly) and spreads rather quickly if cared for. It is known as the "lazy man's grass".

YAY!!! Teepack!!

I have an electric, too. Ain't it purdy? (It's cordless - battery powered.)

I've started a small business with mine, partly to avoid taking loans for school, partly to help other people reduce their carbon emissions. Pimping my services here for anyone interested. :) And info about purchasing one of these mowers yourself here.

These babies are a little pricey initially, but well worth throwing out the gas can, oil, sparkplugs and annual maintenance costs. Not to mention getting rid of the horrid emissions and the noise (I think I hate the noise more than anything) from small gas engines.

I LOVE that mower

Do they make that in the riding variety? I've never looked. I assume it would cost as much as a small car if they did. I'm on mine for almost 5 hours each week. I despise the noise. I wear ear plugs, but it's just awful.

No. Not yet, anyway. :)

Though I've heard tell of small diesel engine riding mowers, for the purpose of using biodiesel rather than gas. I've never been close to one, but long ago I had an old wood boat with a small diesel generator on board. I imagine those mowers are still noisy, but a diesel idle is so much lower and slower, from what I remember it's more like a low octave heart beat than a screaming giant wasp noise attacking your head. No idea how much one of those babies might cost.

Too too funny

Wouldn't it be nice? Of course, then all those companies that make lawn mowers would spend billions of dollars trying to kill the research......or buy up all that seed.
