Heath Shuler Press Statement!

Dear Friends,
Our campaign continues to gain momentum since my announcement to run for the Eleventh Congressional District. Since I last wrote to you I’ve received the endorsement of several groups including: the North Carolina AFL-CIO, the Blue Dog Democrats, and the Western North Carolina Central Labor Council. All of these groups strive to put the interests of working families first, and I am honored to have their support.
We’ve also continued to travel across the district – from Marion to Andrews – reaching out to voters, listening to their concerns, and connecting with them on the issues that affect their daily lives. I wanted to take a moment and share with you just one of those stories.
Just last week I had the privilege of touring a unique business in Andrews – Industrial Opportunities, Inc. or IOI. Its name really says it all. IOI provides hope and opportunity through a work environment for hundreds of disabled individuals, many of whom would remain unemployed and at home without the IOI opportunity.
IOI was founded by the parents of disabled children in Cherokee, Clay and Graham Counties who were aging out of the school programs offered at the time. It has grown from those few families to now having over 250 employees and an annual budget of over $6 million. It’s a great example of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to doing what’s right paying off.
Sadly, however, it’s also one of the few manufacturing plants still open here. The shocking truth is that over the past four years we’ve lost over more than 170,000 manufacturing jobs in North Carolina.

And last month we received the news that Anvil Knitwear in Asheville would be closing its doors and sending 350 good-paying jobs to Honduras. And the day before I toured IOI, we found out that North Carolina was losing another 178 textile jobs. The families of the 11th District continue to feel the very real effects of CAFTA and unfair trade laws.
We all know that Charles Taylor promised the people of this district he was going to oppose CAFTA, and then he failed to follow through. We deserve better.
It’s time we had a Congressman willing to stand up for American jobs, American workers, and American families. Simply put, it is time for a change.
With your continued support I can go to Congress and start making it work for us again, not for the big corporations and special interests.
As always, thank you for your unwavering and generous support. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to all your friends, family, and colleagues.

NOTE: I found it funny in the local Graham Co. Paper that the story printed right above this was a Taylor release all about a Art Contest. Not One word on issues!

I got this on Shuler's mailing list

Good for a mailing list release. I think this is the first time that I have gotten something from a campaign that did not have a link to contribute as the main focus.
