Give my birthday gift to Facing South - Only $37 Away from Goal

The Institute for Southern Studies and I celebrate our birthdays at the same time. Last night I found out that they have a fundraising goal of $1500 and if they meet that goal today it will be matched with another $1500. Yesterday, many of you wished me a happy birthday on Facebook and I can't tell you how it felt to have a new birthday greeting every time I turned around. Thank you so much for helping make my birthday a great day. Now, I know none of you had planned on giving me a gift, but today I'm asking for one and I'd like you to give it to Facing South and The Institute for Southern Studies. You can go here to make your donation.

It will only take 10 of us making a $25 donation to put them over the top.

If you don't like me, fine. Make the donation and think of someone you do like as you click to give this amazing organization a gift that will keep on giving to all of us throughout the coming year. If you don't want to take my word for it, here are a few reasons from their Cause page on Facebook:

  • More than ever, we need credible media, fearless investigative reporting and a powerful voice for change.
  • The Institute publishes FACING SOUTH, the South's biggest online magazine featuring in-depth investigations and fresh Southern perspectives.
  • We also publish SOUTHERN EXPOSURE, a widely-acclaimed journal and winner of the National Magazine Award, two George Polk Awards and more.
  • We have impact -- our investigations have recently been featured on ABC News, CNN, Harper's, NPR, Time, The Washington Post and USA Today.
  • "Facing South is fantastic!" - Washington Post 4/09 /// "I don't know what we'd do without the Institute. Donate!" - Bill Fletcher, BlackCommentator

I know money is tight for everyone, but they only need another $272 to get that $1500 match. Please help Facing South and The Institute for Southern Studies meet their goal.

Thank you!

If I'd known that yesterday was your birthday,

I would have wished you a happy one when I was talking to you! (They won!)

I'll take care of your birthday present before the end of the day.

Sweet Union Dem

Thank you!

My girls are having friends over to help eat the death by chocolate cake in the fridge.

Happy B-Day!

Thanks for bringing attention to Facing South. Sue Sturgis recently wrote a lengthy piece about Three Mile Island which featured my work there.

Facing South

That was you?

I read that piece, and used some of it when arguing with some pro-nuke folks on another site.

Very interesting.

Yep

I was part of the three person investigative team called The Coalition for Independent Investigation.

Thank you for the birthday wishes

and thanks for your good work!

I gave

But it's not going to hurt me financially, since I used a credit card and not "real" money. ;)

On a related note: do they have Internet access in Debtor's Prison? I'd hate to deprive my loyal readers the benefit of my wise financial advice...

I gave my gas money

and just told the girls we aren't going anywhere this week. Ha!

Thank you Betsy!

Thanks to a few generous donations in the last few hours -- including James and Steve from Blue NC(thank you!) -- we're now within $72 of hitting our goal and getting our full match.

Betsy, THANK YOU for this very thoughtful boost -- and for supporting a progressive voice for the South!

- Chris and your friends at Facing South

Thank you for all your hard work!

You are now within $37 dollars of reaching your goal. I'd really like to see you get those matching funds.

Happy Birthday Betsy!

They are now within $12 of reaching the goal.

$1,500+ Reached! & Happy Belated B-Day!

I don't know what else to say, so I'll just post my facebook comment. It asked me to post why I donated, so here it is:

I envision a progressive North Carolina, which I see it moving towards everyday, and supporting a group like this helps make that vision a reality. As marriage equality & other lgbt civil rights issues come up, I know that supporting a group that advocates for progressive political and social causes is the right decision. And we build allies in the progressive community by supporting each other, so while it's not much, I hope a few bucks from me help accomplish that goal & will push them over their $1500 fund raising goal.

Excellent

Thank you, Jake!

This is terrific.

I'm so happy BlueNCers were able to help put Facing South over the top on their fundraising.
