Fred Smith: For Whom Tabor Trolls

source: Inner Banks Eagle

In recent days Nathan Tabor of The Conservative Voice has been spamming North Carolina blogs on behalf of Fred Smith State Senator and Gubernatorial Candidate. Tabor and Smith became enamored of each other last fall as Tabor describes in an effusive description that also belabors his own self-importance as a “blogger”. I caught up with this troll when he posted the entire text of a letter by Fred Smith “Time For Leadership on NC Budget” at exileonjonesstreet as a comment to an unrelated post with the plaintive cry:

Isn’t anyone in the NC blogosphere going to cover this subect? Am I the only one in NC to receive this in my e-mail?

No Nate. You are the only one sending this in your email.

As I said in my response:

You’ve been pushing this Fred Smith letter all over the blogosphere to little effect. You must be pretty desperate if you have to troll around here to beg people to read it.
Fred Smith of CC Mangum wants us to spend out tax dollars on “worthwhile investments like …NEWSFLASH… building and maintaining roads”.
Go back to hawking Revival Soy. At least that’s a real product.

Tabor first posted Smith’s most recent letter January 10th on TCV and received only one comment in response the following day:

I propose a heavy tax on barbeque, sunshine and attractive women, all of which North Carolina has in abundance.

The letter has popped up on a blogs cut and pasted in entirety without commentary either as posts or as comments, with increasing desperation, in unrelated posts by “Concerned NC Conservative” which links back to Tabor’s

Back in September Tabor didn’t fair much better when his idea of blogging was to contact “conservative” bloggers to suggest they write about “conservative” Fred Smith:

Well, I hope you'll find time in October to write about conservative candidates such as NC State Senator Fred Smith. This election cycle is very important.

I bet he didn’t expect this smackdown:

Per Nathan Tabor's request: my thoughts on NC Senator Fred Smith
He doesn't seem worthy of my vote. If I lived in his district, I would write in my own name for his office. I urge you all to do the same. In any race where the candidates suck, write in your own name.

In November Tabor circulated a Fred Smith letter about immigration which caused Plead the First to first notice in December his blog spamming and call him on it but Tabor still persists in spamming for Smith. Comments to that post also note his connection to Jim Kouri, a conservative writer in New Jersey.

In September Jim Kouri wrote a fluff piece on Smith. Kouri and Tabor are friends. Kouri writes for Tabor’s TCV and occasionally the write articles together such as this piece for "John Cox" GOP presidential candidate, apparently another Tabor/Kouri “blogging” client, while Kouri has pumped Tabor’s recent book “The Beast on the East River, trashing the UN

The Smith-Tabor love affair began with Fred Smith’s annual fundraiser back in August:

Gov. Perry's Meeting with Bloggers
August 29, 2006 02:13 PM EST
I had the opportunity last weekend to attend State Senator Fred Smith’s 4th Annual Summer Celebration at the Riverwood Golf Club
A representative handful of us were also invited for our role as bloggers, with the Senator acknowledging the growing importance of the blogosphere. “I appreciate you coming here today,” said Smith as he began his opening remarks to us. “Bloggers are important about getting the message and the truth out.”

Getting the truth out? That's an important thing for an important blogger to do.

The importance of meeting Senator Smith and Governor Perry, and the acknowledgment of our roles as political bloggers was emphasized once again a few days later when I received an e-mail from David Smithdeal, a member of the Senator’s team. “It is our desire to build good long term relationships with all of you,” said the communication.

If the openness of last Saturday’s event continues with regularity between politicians and representatives of the blogosphere, I can assure Mr. Smithdeal, Senator Smith, and Governor Perry, that they are indeed taking the right steps in building “…good long term relationships” with us and our readers.

Lorie Byrd’s post about the event was similary effusive:
and reported that:

The bloggers were invited to attend the reception following the mini press conference. NC blogger Dean Stephens attended the entire Summer Celebration event which began with a golf tournament and ended with the reception. He has an excellent report of the event with lots of pictures of Governor Perry and the others in attendance, including former U.S. Senator Lauch Faircloth. Other bloggers in attendance were Nathan Tabor of The Conservative Voice, Jason Moir of NC Rumors, and Frank Williams of NC Republican Roundtable.

Nathan Tabor’s need to troll and spam the blogs including those of BlueNC regulars like mark kleinschmidt, Kirk Ross and, Thomas Brock is a truly sad commentary on a “conservative voice”. Getting the truth out, openness, good long-term relationships? Doesn't seem to be happening. Fred Smith needs to get out of the business of spamming NC bloggers because hell hath no fury like a blogger trolled.

Nathan! The Dean wants you in his office without the Laptop?

Tabor and Smith became "enamored" of each other* Stunned Observer of Nathan's internet career

After recieving over 1000 e-mails from Nathan over the years about his career. I have reached the conclusion that he is a very lonely young retard who desires a long endearing relationship with some Republican Brokenback Foley cowboy. Maybe a date with Patty might solved this problem?

And Lance at the 10 year reunion. Please have the Dean refund Nathan for letting him have a degree from that fine institution as example of a failure in the reality of the political World.

We hardly knew ye! And with good reason. Ye weren't "ye" after all. Ye were a figment of Little Nate Tabor's alleged mind.

I've had only a few exchanges with Nathan Tabor, starting with when I called him on his gushiness for Ann the Man Coulter. And they were all unpleasant. It's hard to understand why Asphalt King Smith would want to be associated with the little twerp. Such is the nature of conservatism these days. Flog, blog, lie and fly, and hope some of the crap you're throwing against the wall sticks.

It'll be interesting to see Nate and the Puppetmaster duking it out in the Republican primary over whose boy is the "real" conservative in this hunt.

Great post, Greg

Fine work all around.

Fred Smith ain't getting any love from anybody -- even his own kind.

This post will be all over Johnston County in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...

Thank you, gregflynn.

He is fun to read, isn't he?

I heart Fred

It was a weird enough letter that I went ahead and approved it. Besides I've been hypnotized by the dozens or so giant Fred Smith signs along U.S. 70.

We're like moths drawn to the flame, hoping not to be consumed by it. Thanks for releasing it into the wild. I like sunshine/openness/transparency.

What a turd, Nathan Tabor is

Spamming press releases/letters? What a turd.

It reminds me of those classified ads telling you how you can make money placing classified ads.

I don't think Tabor quite gets

how the blogosphere works.

I'll be seeing him in April

at our 10-year reunion. I'd be glad to collect for a card and flowers.

For what it's worth...

Tabor has denied that the spammer is him, both on my blog ( and in other places. It's possible that the spammer is someone else posing as him, though it makes little sense. Of course, it also makes little sense for Tabor to deny it's him, then continue doing it.

Easy enough to solve

Check IP addresses. If the email from Tabor and the spammer's post came from the same IP, tada. If different, then he might be telling the truth. If its worth all the secret spy stuff.

Personally I think feeding trolls makes them grow bigger.

IP addresses

change. Forget the IP addresses. Invest in a sniffer (or find a geek with one) and get the mac from the packets.

If these are Fred Smiths advisers we wont even have the chance to destroy him in the general. that makes me kinda sad.

"Keep the Faith"

I was a little surprised

but I allowed his spam to go up anyway. Thanks for calling this out.

The spam comment is here in a comment on a post about Hackney's Speaker race.

Tabor has multiple domains and locations to work from, so multiple IP addresses are not a problem. He is obviously in the thick of it. If Fred Smith has been shielded from abuses that have taken place in his name that shield has been removed.
