Fetzer to schools: Ignore the President

In case you missed it, Tom Fetzer, who is not gay, yesterday called on North Carolina schools to steer clear of letting young impressionable students hear the President of the United States encourage them to strive for excellence.

"Our focus should be improving our students’ test scores, not the President’s approval rating."

Test scores? Really? It seems to me that "our focus" should be on inspiring children to learn so they can be successful in life. But I guess when you're a grown man trying to prove to the world that you're not gay, things are never that simple.

Comments

I guess I understand his sentiment

If the previous president had been trying to talk to my kids in school about the importance of learning, I would have objected too. Of course, AWOL George obviously didn't think learning was important in the first place, so that would have never happened.

I wonder how it's going with W's library. Did they ever find a book he'd actually read?

(Sorry George, you know I love you. Just kiddin'.)

He read it upside down

so I think he was just pretending to read it, sort of like he was pretending to be a uniter.

Scary

"Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" ~ George W. Bush

More scary

"As yesterday's positive report card shows, childrens do learn when standards are high and results are measured." --on the No Child Left Behind Act, Washington, D.C., Sept. 26, 2007 (Watch video clip)

Creepy too

To think that clown got a pass from the adoring right-wing for eight years ... Fetzer should be down on his knees begging forgiveness for his complicity in such dark and evil times.

I have heard this also

I grew up in the South and have lived in the South my entire life. If you believe that, you have been sheltered a great deal or you weren't raised in the South. I think you would be extremely surprised at the number of registered democrats in NC and other Southern states that are racists not to mention bigots. This needs to change and in my opinion, it will as these people age out, so to speak.

Test Scores ?

Is this confirmation that they teach the test?

Barack Obama seems to be an astounding example of the things that can be accomplished through drive, initiative and education. Perfect to motivate our children and especially children from under acheiving segments of the population.

The latest tempest in a tea pot is such an overt attempt to demonize and undermine the President that it would be comical if so many sheeple did not beleive (or want to beleive)

I just have to say this

I am sure that I am viewed as "negative" at times with what I post here, and I do that for a reason. On this issue with Obama making a speech to school children, I am absolutely horrified that there are people in our country that have a problem with that. What was Bush Jr. doing when 911 happened? Why was there nothing said about him being at a school as president? This is ludicrous, people. If I had a child in school, I would be elated that he/she had the opportunity to hear a sitting president actually making an address directly to them. I have heard that this will be somehow "political" and somehow "indoctrination". How idiotic is that? This is a president that has a history of dealing with all sorts of issues in his young life and has been able to become president of the U.S. What in the world could he ever say that would be indoctrination or to sway young people in one political view or another?

I'm saddened at what the other side is trying to say about this and believe that in the end, it will end up hurting them in a big way.

I actually heard the "N" word in the post office today

In my little town, I heard the "N" word today as this debate about watching our president on TV was talked about between two customers in line at the post office. My 16 year old son was with me, and I was just about to explode and say something, when he spoke up. Out of the mouth of my 6 foot 2 son, came...

"You sir are a racist. I do not agree with you and I want you to know that. I want you to know that I will be watching my President on TV at my school."

With that the man stormed out and about 6 people in line clapped. It reminded me of what I was taught by my Dad.
"Children will listen to the things you say and they will listen when you say nothing at all."

Somewhere, my child has been listening. He did the right thing and he did not enable or allow the racism to persist.

I just looked at him and thanked him for being my role model.

That is

awesome.

Awesome indeed

Brought tears to my eyes. There is hope.

Tommy, I think he's talking to you

Either cynical or stupid ... take your pick.

We're all grateful you've chosen to avoid the hard job of parenthood, Mr. Fetzer.

Harwood is top notch

I met John this summer..his daughter and our son worked together at a wilderness ministry based near Mt. Rogers in Virginia (whose executive director, btw, is Charlie Crist's niece). John is a first-rate intellect and political observer, and a helluva nice guy.
