I was searching the Library of Congress page for bills on LGBT equality, when I stumbled upon something odd, that I dismissed at the time as I was running late for a meeting anyway. Then I saw it again today on another site. And I was livid.
HJ Res 50. Also called
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.
It was filed May 7 of this year and is quite short and direct
Section 1. This article may be cited as the `Marriage Protection Amendment'.
Which is hypocritical because:
Section 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.
Now, far be it from me to point out to the crowd that screams about wanting small government, and leaving things to the state, and staying out of people's lives, how this causes a monstrous outreach of the Federal government, stamping on states rights to decide the marriage issue, and in doing so attacks the private lives of citizens. But what really got me irritated was the persons that co-sponsored this bill.
Namely my district rep. Patrick McHenry...
For those of you who don't know, he is due to be married, isn't that sweet? And in the meantime he seems to be working to dissolve my marriage.
It is also co-sponsored by Walter B. Jones Jr. of district 3.
I plan all calling him tomorrow morning. And emailing him. And possibly posting on his facebook page... to pull his sponsorship, and to support the HR 3567 the Respect for Marriage Act of 2009 (The Act to Repeal DOMA). Not that he will listen to someone living in his district...
But hopefully your representative is more compassionate to their citizens than mine is...
