Easley Beats Liddy in Head to Wig Poll

We have more polling goodness coming our way tonight from Public Policy Polling. They polled 501 registered voters on January 22, 2007. Their release says these are "likely general election voters".

They polled on approval ratings for our governor and senators as well as approval ratings for the war in Iraq. We will also get to see how a hypothetical meeting between He-Who-Refuses-To-Run and Empty Wig would end up.

To the poll!........

Easley wins the popularity contest hands down. He has a 50% approval rating compared to 36% for Dole and 32% for Burr.

North Carolinians do not like Bush's plan to escalate death and dismemberment in Iraq. A surprisingly high 57% of those polled do not approve of the plan.

Finally, in a head to wig hypothetical race, Easley beats Dole 44% to 41%. I wonder if Governor Easley is paying attention?

Not Exciting that Dole is within the MOE

Bad news for Dems.

Has been for awhile, but Bush was under 50% too

So was Hayes in their poll, etc.

uhh

6 months ago I saw her polling at above 50%. I will have to go find that, but I dont think she has been below 50 for "a while" I know the last poll I saw had her at like 52 and Burrrrrr at 40, I just cant remember if it was 6 months or a year ago.

At this stage it is not bad news for Dems

Your big old proclamation of DOOM is unwarranted. This is just fun for now....hence the silliness of the post.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

He's not running

I kinda wish everyone would stop speculating on Easley and start thinking about people who haven't denied a billion times that they'd run.

Amen.

Thank you, Jake. I was getting ready to go off on a rant, but you saved my butt.

EASLEY IS NOT RUNNING

Roy Cooper

I think Roy Cooper would make a strong candidate. He has won statewide races in the past. He should be able to raise the ammount of money that will be needed to compete in 2008. Brad Miller as well would make a strong candidate. He certainly would get the grassroots excited. I have been very impressed with how much Miller makes himself available to the public (blogging, speaking, etc).

THANKS SD

Now instead of sleeping I have to write a post about how we absolutely have to take her down. It will be long, and involve lots of analyzing.

Also, while I disagree that this is bad news for DEMS i think its bad news for the DSCC's recruitment of Easley. When a guy with a +17 approval vs a woman with a +0% approval can only muster a 3 point lead there is a problem. However, I will say that if they had included leaners it would probably be much larger.

Candidate pool

Democrats must find a candidate to run against Dole without touching current members of Congress.

So who do we have? Mike Easley (out), Richard Moore (uninterested?), Bev Perdue (focusing on a gubernatorial race), Roy Cooper (?), Joe Hackney (just elected Speaker, so not in 2008), any frustrated back benchers out there who will declare just to shake up the field? Mayors? Jim Hunt for a last hurrah?

why?

No current member of congress?

Moore isnt uninterested, he is running for governor. Given Roy Cooper's comments when he withdrew from the governor's race it is doubtful he will run for anything.

The most obvious mayoral choices are Charlotte and Raleigh. Meeker is running for reelection, and McCroy is a Republican.

So, I am still left with my hope, Brad Miller.

Members of Congress

With everything that is going on in Washington over the next two years, we cannot afford having people having to devote gobs of time preparing to campaign for a higher office. We very much need Brad Miller to establish himself on the oversight subcommittee of which he is chair.

The second issue is who runs to fill Brad Miller's seat in Congress.

That is why I want to have members of Congress not to consider running for anything else in 2008.

Dole camp leaving

A few of Dole's key people have already jumped ship to other campaigns. I figure she is a decoy, until the GOP Senate Caucus finds a replacement.

We saw from the NC GOP chairman nominating fiasco, that the guys in DC are running the GOP state party, and the locals have no idea what is going on.

I hope

You are right. But it raises the question who would run?
Sue Myrick? Patty is too young I think. Jones wont get support cause of his Iraq comments. All the other "big" names are looking at Governor.
I think that leaves Hayes, Pittenger, McCroy....?
I wonder if Cherie Berry wouldnt be a dark horse candidate, but I doubt it. Maybe they will just give up on the charade and nominate Art Pope.

Let's just put it this way

In 2004 which person did you see cavorting about in front of microphones speaking in support of the Preznit....or was that 2000. Google "Pat McCrory President Bush" and look at all the articles that pop up. I'd say the national party would prefer Mayor Pat for Sue's seat. They've been grooming him for a while now. The real scary part is how chummy our "moderate" Mayor Pat is with Dubya.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

pickings are slim for the GOP in NC

Should be interesting to see who the choice would be.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Civitas Group/pope/locke has a candidate to run, the repubs of nc pick someone, and the national repubs pick someone. (and all file in the final days without talking to one antoher)

Oh.My.God.
