How on earth

I'm going to feed 20 people on an all-local-ingredient menu.

Why do I do things like this to myself?

Two words.

Vegetable Stew.

Well, more seriously, you could do starter salad that was locally grown tomato slices with a slab of melted Carolina Creamery cheese on top. Then, you could go to Cliff's to get some locally-produced meat (unless everyone is eating vegetarian). Maple View Farms for desert over a strawberry pie made with local strawberry's.

There's the problem.

I don't cook or eat meat, which makes finding a source of protein without TVP or tofu kind of tricky. (Also, not a big fan of tomatoes.)

I have what look like protocukes on my cucumber plant, so maybe I'll have a couple by then.

When I lived in Florida...

I lived with a couple cajuns. You could make an incredible red beans and rice without too much problem...oh, local. Hmmmm....
How about kabobs on the grill? local veggie kabobs?

As for the strawberry pie, if you don't cook you could do some sort of strawberries & ice cream for a local desert.

I cook...

just not meat. I've learned to say I don't cook meat, because sometimes people think ... I don't know what they think, really, but they expect me to be OK with putting meat in my pans. Eeew.

June is eat local month, so I'm trying to see if I can do it. It's tougher than you'd expect!

We've got nice eggs at the farmers' market, but I don't want to serve eggs cooked a dozen ways, even if those ways are quiche, souffle, deviled, and ice cream...

Think small courses with drinks.

You can do a small salad course, a small soup course (cold cucumber for instance), a cheese and bread course, a pasta course, a desert course, etc.
I think you've inspired me.

Ehhhhhxcellent.

My work here is done ;) Which reminds me, have you read the Omnivore's Dilemma yet?

I'm thinking something less sit-down, as we only have table space for ... well, less than 20. I am considering gazpacho, however, despite my dislike of tomatoes. (pureed, they're OK.)

are there any local markets with peppers and onions yet?

My whole family loves sauteed peppers and onions with just a touch of cajun seasoning. I use all colors to make it purty. We also grill peppers brushed with olive oil and stuffed with goat cheese and some rosemary...I think it's rosemary....will have to check.

Corn on cob....just can't beat corn on cob and can wrap in foil and put on the grill as well.

Oh....and then there's stuffed zucchini...also on the grill.

I saw some onions the other week.

I haven't seen peppers yet, though. Corn is definitely on my list. (I saw a way to cook it in the husk; pull the silk out, butter it up, and push the husk over it. I haven't tried it yet, though.)

I have....and it's wonderful

I still usually wrap in foil...but my hubby tends to get the corn a little too done if I don't.

what i have done

its a long cook, but you can throw corn still in husk straight on the grill no problem.

Is there any local rice

Sauteed or steamed fresh veggies over rice always pleases. I guess there's no local soy sauce, either, eh?

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

Probably not!

I definitely want to highlight seasonal veggies and fruits. One of my friends suggested crepes with berries for dessert. I just hope I can find some by then!

Local Strawberries!

I have a freezer full!!!! Yummmm. Ring's Strawberry farm is right down the street from me. I can't stop myself from going over there every Sat. morning at 7:30 and getting more. I can only eat a few at a time or I break out in the most entertaining hives you've ever seen. But the berries are huge and sweet - some of them are nearly 2 1/2 inches in diameter. You'd think when they get that big, they wouldn't taste good, but they are wonderful.

The Rings were able to save their crop during the Easter Freeze by spraying them with water (seems counter intuitive, but it worked.) Unfortunately, most of the peaches in the county were destroyed. Ah well - next year.

And on another berry note - we've discovered blackberries all over our backyard - this is the first year we've allowed these particular "weeds" to grow because I liked the flowers, and TA DA! I've got enough berries to make at least two pies - if they don't get eaten before I get home tonight.

My favorite trick

with blueberries and I think it works with other berries too is...

wash the berries, cull the bad ones and get rid of all stems, toss them in a salad spinner or let them drain in a colander then spread them single thickness on cookie sheets and let them air dry some more, then freeze them right on the cookie sheet and after an hour or so, carefully pack them into ziplock bags or other airtight containers. They keep almost for a year and you can take out just how many you want at a time because they remain individuals. I use them nearly every morning on cereal or in protein shakes.

That works.

that's what I do. With strawberries, I "cap" them (pull off the green caps), and half them. before I freeze them. They keep freeze well. They're not as good as fresh, but they're close. I haven't had to add anything to them (like sugar or anything like it)

Thanks for the info

I didn't find any berries today, though. Maybe next week!

Just got an email from Ryan at Under the Dome . . . he's looking to experiment with a bit of collaborative journalism - and has linked to Mark Binker at the Greensboro News and Record as part of the deal. Check it out.

You were one of nearly 700 people who recently completed the Center for Global Development survey on the selection of the next World Bank president. Thank you!

Respondents represented 71 nations; all world regions; high-, middle- and low-income countries; a variety of professional affiliations; and all adult age groups. Despite the participants' diversity, they displayed striking uniformity in their preference for an open, competitive selection process, their weighting of selection criteria, and their assessment of potential candidates for president of the World Bank--including the U.S. nominee,
