DOUBLE UPDATE: Give me a break

DOUBLE UPDATE (Robert P. jumping in):
Another cowardly reporter dodges the story because they "haven't gotten the story from someone involved". Reporters weren't so cautious, here, or here, or here, or here.

UPDATE: Two more bits of new on this sad saga.

First off, I just learned that the media may be suppressing another rampant rumor involving none other than Hairdresser Joe Boylan. Apparently Joe's been on the giving end of some uninvited groping of at least one female colleague in the House. And apparently everybody besides We the People knows about this, but the hush is on, courtesy of the mainstream political reporters.

Second, Representatives Almond and Boylan may have something else in common. Both came to town to replace moderate Republicans who could work across the aisle, and both were at odds with Richard Morgan. (Boylan challenged and defeated Morgan.) Which means they came to work with the blessings of Art Pope.

To my knowledge.

................................

The State Capitol is all a-twitter about Representative David Almond (R) resigning from the House, a story which Greg Flynn was on top of early, following a blog post by Mark Binker. In the wake of the news, emails have been flying all around Raleigh from reliable sources that Almond's transgression involved exposing himself to a female staff member. I personally have received that news from several sources, and Greg reported it in the comments on his original post.

So why is it that the News and Observer, which has certainly gotten the same emails, is tip-toeing around the issue like some big game of "I've got a secret." From where I sit, it's just more political butt-covering, no pun intended, designed to give cover to the NC GOP.

The N&O in general, and Under the Dome in particular, report unsubstantiated rumors week-in and week-out. Why are they drawing some moralistic line-in-the-sand here? Are they afraid to offend the sensibilities of North Carolina's right-wing Theocrats if they say the word "masturbate" on their website? Is that somehow more offensive than reporting the steady stream of lies Babs Barrett covers coming out of the White House?

What a bunch of crap.

Wacking for McCain with Almond Nuts?

It is reported that former Rep Almond Nuts Van had a Mc Cain bumper sticker on it.....

In other bizarre news from the McCain campaign, the AP reports in the same article that "a co-chair of McCain's Florida campaign — state Rep. Bob Allen — was arrested Wednesday after offering to perform oral sex for $20 on an undercover male police officer, authorities said. Allen, 48, was seen coming in and out of a restroom three times at a park in Titusville, Fla., said police Lt. Todd Hutchinson."

All I can say is wow. Better man the lifeboats, Johnny Boy.

Was It Sexual Harrassment?

Has it ever happened to you?
Maybe that's what you're missing.

It is special.

:p

Of course it was sexual harassment

and I am asking why it wasn't included in the story, if known by the reporters.

I don't get what it has to do with whether I've been sexually harassed or not. We're not talking about an incident involving a minor, in which case I would probably have a different standard.

Me, Too

If they told the whole story

it would expose their liberal bias - because of course reality has a well known liberal bias.

Hee!

I would love it if I could find the "liberal bias" in the media, wouldn't you?

Maybe if they'd report on reality, we'd find it!

Stephen Colbert

says that, "Reality has a well-known liberal bias." Colbert for President!

If this happened to a DEM...

The state GOP and the GOP House Caucus would be marching in front of the legislative building, and calling every media outlet in the state.

I think this issue deserves some answers, and the media needs to be swarming to find them.

Currently, most of the public outside of the Triangle is unaware of this type of GOP ethics

Are there any press conferences scheduled to bring attention to this event.

Nothing formal scheduled

This is one of those things where every insider (I'm not one of them) knows what really happened and they're all covering each other's asses.

maybe Les Merritt

He seems to enjoy intervening with legislative affairs.

...or maybe some activists in Wake County can hand out some Almond Joy's to the media.

priceless

god, if I didn't have to work ... Costco carries Almond Joy by the case, don't they. Of course, now i can never eat another Almond Joy ... ever.

Double Standard.

I suggest we point out that they are more than willing to print the lies the Bush administration spouts, like the "terror" attack at that military base that ended up being a bunch of yahoos. There have been dozens of these "fake" attacks and I'll bet that the N&O printed every one of them. Yet, how often do we see a frontpage retraction or some investigative reporting, or them NOT printing it because it could be rumor.
Like the TB guy, OOPS, ends up he DIDN'T have the highly contagious form of TB, did that make the front page?
Almond is a pervert, what if there have been others? The N&O is aiding and abetting a pervert and his reputation.

Also, if someone else has been groping people in the People's House, the people deserve to know about it and they deserve to go to jail.

Another reporter "unwilling" to do

what was done to Clinton by every media outlet in the nation.

First, the ick factor. I won't detail the rumors about what Almond did, because I haven't gotten the story from someone involved. But I can tell you that those who have heard the allegations would really prefer not to talk about them. If it's true, it's the sort of tale for which you might not want to be a "reliable source."

Sent this to LL at the Tavern ...

I am so hating this whole mess.

We Dems have some serious conflict over it. We all know in our guts that Hackney and other Dems are handling this Almond thing the way such things should be handled … with a modicum of discretion. Nobody wants their 6 year old or 12 year old hearing the gory details of the transgression of one of Art Pope’s hand picked Legislators on the radio or tv. Nobody. Not even this bright blue “Freedom, Fair Wages & the Common Good” Democrat.

But we all also know that, were this whole event reversed as to party affiliation, Republicans would exercise no such discretion. They have absolutely no couth nor decency. The details, real and/or speculated, would have already been leaked to every RW blog in NC. I’m not the only living person who remembers what DC was like in 1998, am I?

That's how I'm feeling anyway. Honest guys, I don't want these details on WRAL tonight. Poking a little fun is all well and good, but please don't push for the raw story. It ain't about "getting them." It's about not exposing the innocent to the debauchery. You don't need details to whittle a big stick out of this thing and beat Art Pope over the head with it.

Am I being too sensitive and grrrrly? .... I don't know ... maybe it's just me ...

Take it from somebody

whose teenaged daughter served as a page in the NCGA. This kind of story can't be suppressed or treated with kid gloves, because that kind of behavior thrives on such things. The more exquisite the public embarassment to the individual, the less likely others will engage in such acts.

On the political side, everybody needs to keep in mind that a healthy chunk of North Carolinians who vote Republican do so because they are under the misapprehension that the GOP is the better choice for promoting "moral values". If that myth can be dashed, getting good things accomplished might be a lot easier in the future.

Thanks, sc -

That about sums it up right there.

GOP - Greatly Over Priced

I understand what you're saying Leslie

However, sexual harrassment, if indeed that is what happened - which seems absolutely obvious - must not be kept hidden. Young women (and men) need to know that it will not be tolerated, and that it is not something to keep quiet about.

When it is reported, it doesn't have to be reported in graphic detail - that Almond pulled out his penis and chased the woman around the office asking her to perform oral sex - but that he is alleged to have sexually harrassed a staff member, that a complaint was filed, and that he resigned and has said that he will fight it.

It has to be reported, and reported, and reported. That's the only way this garbage will stop.

And I would say that if it were a Democrat accused of the same thing.

Well, see, that's what I'm saying.

I didn't mean to say, "Don't talk about it." My bad if I came across like that. Of course sexual harassment can't be tolerated and it has to be reported. It's just I'd hate to see the graphic details or the harassee's name in print from Murphy to Manteo, that's all.

as a victim of harassment from people who should have known better and ....

well, just believe you don't really want to know. it's not at all pleasant.

It's not pleasant.

It's intimidating, and uncomfortable, and the bastards who do it count on their victims being uncomfortable talking about it and people being uncomfortable hearing about it. It's like mini-rape. They get away with it, because we don't talk about it. Like mold and fungus, if you shine enough light on it, it will shrivel up and blow away.

Just About Like That -

people being uncomfortable hearing about it. It's like mini-rape. They get away with it, because we don't talk about it

It worse when you try to talk about it and you get, 'oh, we've already had complaints about him' - oh, great. And nothing happens. That's always special.

Yup.

Then why THE FUCK didn't you do something, then? (I found that response to the "we've had complaints before" thing effective, particularly combined with - "Did I tell you my Dad's a lawyer?")

The biggest problem

with cases like this is unlike a "normal" assault case where the identity of the victim can be protected from the media, any case involving public figures is going to involve semi-public victims.

I hope that this is resolved with the utmost respect for the victims, and with the utmost respect for the legal rights of everyone involved.
