Did Richard Burr use insider information to protect his family bank account?

h/t The Hill Briefing Room Blog

Senator Richard Burr admitted Monday night to instructing his wife to withdraw the maximum amount she could from their bank accounts in successive nights the week the financial crisis began. As a member of the Senate he acted on information that wasn't available to the general pubic. He knew things we did not and he took action to protect his personal finances while citizens of North Carolina trusted he was acting in our best interest.

Taking the audience inside some of the pivotal events, Burr recalled Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson relating a call from the CEO of a company with business operations in all 50 states. The company planned to move money around to meet its payroll obligation.

“On Wednesday morning of that week, after they had given the transfer notice to the bank, the Chicago bank called and said, ‘We didn’t transfer the money. There is no money being transferred. There is no money that will transfer from a bank to a bank anywhere in the United States, and likely there is no money that will transfer from a bank to a bank anywhere in the world,’” Burr said.

“On Friday night, I called my wife and I said, ‘Brooke, I am not coming home this weekend. I will call you on Monday. Tonight, I want you to go to the ATM machine, and I want you to draw out everything it will let you take. And I want you to tomorrow, and I want you to go Sunday.’ I was convinced on Friday night that if you put a plastic card in an ATM machine the last thing you were going to get was cash.”

Nice, Senator Burr. Always looking out for #1, eh? We'll remember that.

Hey....just think, if you'd used that information to unload any stocks...well...you know.

So, is it OK for a Senator or Congressman

to act on information that isn't publicly available?

Unbelievable

If everyone had done what Richard Burr's family did, those actions would have created a full blown run on America's banks. And millions more Americans would be standing in bread lines right now.

This is quite remarkable.

It is also the end of Richard Burr's political career. His very own Macaca Moment.

It'll be interesting to see how long Burr stands with the story before he claims it's all a big misunderstanding. We're going to see enough spin to start a windmill farm.

The Dick Brrrrr is always for himself and never

for the people. Remember he's the one that has fought long and hard to make sure the Bio-Defense industry had no FOIA oversight. The Sunlight Foundation points to his secret provision inserted in Defense Appropriations....

The Biodefense and Pandemic Vaccine and Drug Development Act of 2005 (S. 1873), nicknamed "Bioshield Two" and sponsored by Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina), aims to shortcut safety testing for new vaccines and drugs in case of a pandemic, and to protect vaccine makers and the pharmaceutical industry from legal liability for vaccine injuries.[neutrality disputed] The proposed bill would create a new federal agency, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Agency (BARDA), that would act "as the single point of authority" to promote advanced research and development of drugs and vaccines in response to bioterrorism and natural disease outbreaks, while shielding the agency from public Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. BARDA would be exempt from long-standing open records and meetings laws that apply to most government departments.

You know....

We on the Left may be having fun with this whole down with Burr thing but maybe Burr being worst person in the world isn't all that good for us. Unlike us, most people didn't know who Burr was now he will have Republicans tripping over themselves to support him and try to bolster his stature.

I'm just saying that this could back fire. Although Burr is looking really bad in the polls right now he still has time to turn things around. We can't take our eye off the ball just yet. We need to POUND HIM ON HIS RECORD NOT JUST HIS HALF BRAINED COMMENTS THAT HE MAKES! He voted against the Fair Pay Act For Women. That vote alone is reason enough that he should be KICKED out of office. He FOLLOWED the rest of his misguided party instead of voting for the Economic Recovery. So when the Economy FINALLY Turns around he better not get in front of any microphone saying that he had any part in it.

This guys is getting paid right now to just sit in a seat and Follow his Party Leadership right off the cliff. We need to communicate to the people in our districts about Burr. Hell, maybe they don't even know who he is and isn't aware of just how ineffective he is. What I am saying is our work has just begun.

Saw David Young's interview

He did OK...except he said that Burr was elected in in off year. Burr was elected in 2004 which is a Presidential election year. Burr got elected b/c of the R after his name. He took advantage of W's coattails.

Off year for the Dems

Burr got in their because of the sheer fact that we didn't run a strong enough candidate for the seat. We need to be looking for talent in all areas of the State. That way when the time comes we have all ready groomed a guy that is ready. Right now I am going to drop a name to watch out for in the next couple of years. You may know of him he is NC District 5 Senator Don Davis. He was Mayor of Snow Hill and he is in his first term as Senator in the General Assembly. He got what it takes to win ANY office in Government. He may not be ready right now for the Big Time but give him a couple of years of getting his feet wet in the General Assembly.

Awesome, awesome, awesome

You have to read the responses to the Burr article in the Char-O. Typically the wingnuts flood the site with idiotic responses. This time it looks like the anti-Burr crowd got there first. Go have a read.
