and thank her or him for their work. Word comes today from Melissa Price [via Pat B.] that the Senate passed the House version of H91, Registration and Voting at One Stop Sites. The bill allows for voter registration and voting by Absentee ballot at early voting sites up to the weekend before election day.
The YD's made this their Legislative priority for 2007 and they saw it through. At the risk of sounding over 200 years old ...
huzZAH!!
Oh, yes ... my Senator, the guy who wants to be Guv'nah (when he grows up) ... he voted No. You can let him know what you think of that right here.

Woo Hoo! This is WONDERFUL news
It also means that when my oldest turns 18 in five years less than a month before election day, she will be able to vote. She will be very, very happy about that.
My senator voted yes. :) Thanks for letting us know Leslie.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Well, I hate to stop my own (sorta) thunder
But it's important to note that as long as someone is going to be 18 by the general election date, they are allowed to register (even traditionally) for about 60 days before the primary.

They did a mock election
in social studies and she was told she would not be able to register. Still, we had discussed this b/c she's been making noise about getting involved in teen Dems and I've shown her the posts about same-day reg.

Oops!
Looks like somebody needs to point out to the Social Studies teacher what the requirements really are:
I took that right off the SBOE website,
just click on "Voting in North Carolina."
ETA: It's printed on the voter registration forms, too. You have to sign that to register!
Right.
That was one thing I learned from Less Merit's audit. He said underage people had been allowed to vote, apparently not realizing NC law allows people to register and vote in the primary if they will be 18 by the date of the general election. One would think he might have read the law before accusing the BOE of violating it, but . . .
Yeah, I had enough problems when I ran
Making sure the youngest sisters and brothers and nephews and nieces of my friends and supporters knew they could vote in the primary at 17.

This is really great news
for voting rights in NC. It takes away much of the power of the GOP's caging lists and other dirty tricks they use to discourage voter turnout.
34-15 is a nice margin as well. I presume the House version did not include that dumb little English-only requirement.
The House stood up and did not concur
Now let's hope they stand up on the budget as well.

Apologies as my own lobbying fell on deaf ears
and Senator Brown voted "No."

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?
So did Blake.
Doesn't surprise me in the least, though.
That's all right. This bill is good for NC. Once it's law, it will be good to help get people registered.
And any man who wants to be
Governor of a democratic State like NC should have had the decency and backbone to vote for the democratic ideal of making sure every eligible voter in the republic has the right to cast a ballot. Fred Smith does not believe in protecting the average NC citizen's right to vote. It's great for Iraqi's ... not so much for American citizens. I'm sure he's got some logic at work in the back of that belief, but I'll be danged if I can understand what it is.
P.S. NCYD's rock. :)

HUZZAH!
Is Correct!
(I can't say "right" because they didn't vote for it)
I'll wait. I'll see him out in public one day and tell him myself.
But ya'll go ahead - show the Gov. Wannabe some Dixie love, mm'Kay?
pfffftttt......

This is absolutely fantastic! I'm so glad this passed!
Considering the Republican's around this country want to stifle voting as much as possible, this is a huge win for the people of North Carolina.
YES!
North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

Figures, Pittenger voted No.
I must be the most liberal kid on my block, cause my neighbors keep re-electing that jack *ss.
Larry Kissell is MY Congressman
I read this morning
that this must also get approval from the US Justice Department once Gov Easley signs the bill. I hope the feds don't find some reason to interfere, but considering who is in charge in DC, I have a feeling they will try.
Same Day voter passage made Progressive States Dispatch
It is most excellent to see the great state of NC talked about here.
While I'm thinking about it, a quick thank you note to Rep. Deborah Ross for sponsoring and championing this bill is in order if y'all have time today.
